340rbhs-5 Fifth Wheel Bunkhouse
We are looking at possibly ordering a 340rbhs fifth wheel bunkhouse. Anyone out there have one that can comment on it. The dealer does not have one so we would be ordering it essentially site unseen. We did look at a travel trailer with the same basic layout.

Re: 340rbhs-5 Fifth Wheel Bunkhouse
Hi and welcome.

No, I do not have that model, but just about. Ours is the TT equivalent, 321 RBHS.

The 5th wheel you are looking at is actually nicer with the bedroom slide and large front closet.

We are really happy with ours for our use. The rear bunkhouse is great for our two little girls, had to make a bunk ladder though. Replace lightbulbs with weaker ones, the factory ones are way too hot for small fingers. Great closet space in bunk house also. The large slide out is great, we choose the table with chairs ( leather covered ), more comfortable for me than the dinette. The kitchen pantry is great and best fridge we own. Bath area tall enough for me 6'3" to have a shower, and plenty of hot water. Really like the sink seperately from bath. The rear garage/ storage is huge and you can stuff a lot in there.

Now, there have been a few very small things that needed attention, but I chose to fix it myself. I actually enjoy it, don't tell Pilgrim. We have also added a few kid friendly things to personalize it.

These units are great but also long, ours is 35'3". But it tows great.

You may need a one ton for yours.

Since you may have to order one, consider sealed units, we did order them. Several subtle improvements have been adde for the 2004 model year.

Did you look at the 369 rbhs-5 with 2 bathrooms?

If I won the lottery, if I wanted a 5er, if I needed a new one, if I had a truck big enough, this could be the one.

Thanks for the reply. We will have to order one as the dealer does not have any in stock. We did consider (briefly) the 36 bunkhouse, but that is just too too much for us. If we were living in it then that would be something different.

What were you referring to by "sealed units"?

PS Your new truck should be able to handle both 5th wheel models (340 and 36).

" sealed units "

Dual Pane / insulated glass is what I am referring too. I insisted since I am in the glass/ window business. Cooler in summer & warmer in winter are the benefits.

Good luck, stay in touch.

Got to go, just packing / hitching up for today & Saturday camping.

dual pane windows
Obviously you felt that the dual pane windows were worth the extra expense. Do you remember how much that extra expense was? Would the furnace or AC have difficulty keeping the unit comfortable without the dual pane windows, or were you considering the cost of the gas to run the furnace? I don't suppose cost would usually be an issue with AC since the electric is part of your campground fee - unless you're doing seasonal camping with metered electric. Does Pilgrim offer tinted windows?

The cost for the dual pane windows were about $1000 and I also added the aluminium wheels at the same time for about $600.

I cannot compare ours to units without the dual pane windows but a couple of months ago did we have frost at night and we were comfortable and the furnace was seldom on. And this past weekend, yesterday, did we have daytime temperatures of 92 Farenheit/ 35 Celcius, boy was it hot. The air was on constant, of course, but we were not too warm inside. Remember our camper units are very large, so I am very thankful for the 15000 btu AC.

I was disappointed though that Pilgrim did not make the tint darker in these dual pne windows. Darker/ higher reflectivity will reduce load on AC and add privacy/ and darker interior. Thought it was obvious but my salesrep at the dealer was too young/ inexperienced.

Wish the skylight in the kitchen was tinted also.

Perhaps darker tinting for the windows isn't an option - or maybe you have to request it. We have used the stick-on stuff. Plastic? Vinyl? Can't remember. It's a nuisance to get cut just right and you have to work it quite a bit to get the bubbles out. Not the classiest looking stuff in the world, but it does help.

Hadn't thought about the skylight. Good point. Guess it's nice in the winter, but could be a problem in the summer. Wonder if you could cut one of those reflective panels to push up into the skylight during warm weather, then take it down during cold weather.

I have a friend who experienced a strange problem with the skylight in her shower. They were camping in the mountains, and the folks up the mountain could look right down into their shower. She's "artistic", so she painted some kind of stained glass design on the skylight. She still got the light plus lots of pretty colors, but no one could see in from above. Those splashes of color might be nice in a shower, but I don't know if you'd want them in your kitchen/living area.

Someone mentioned some kind of stickon material that could be used to cover the clear glass entry door - various designs. I haven't checked it out yet. Don't know how well this would stay put with the heat from the skylight or how reflective it would be.
