April 2004 work weekend
It looks like do to easter vacations we'll be getting more support on sunday than saturday. My plans now are to work on the Atv by pass on saturday morning. We will be meeting at the daniel trail head at 8am. I or my designee will bring our particapant list up to Janet, M. Hall or Leigh. at the hunt camp before 9am. I will make a notation next to my cpr/first aide certified people. we will not be using power tools though. we will be marking with some kind of marking ribbon our proposed atv by-pass and clearing the way of brush that can be moved by hand. any thing that needs to be cut by power saw i will inform the Rangers of and will be dealt with at a later time. I don't anticapate that any power saw work would take a great deal of time. I will also be getting an estimation on how much fenceing I think we will need to get it properly limited to atv's. We will not be blocking the trail at all do to Zuwharie. My plan depending on the amount of people I have is to take 10 or so people up to the proposed site and leave some others back in the trail head sweeping it of trash. which will save us time on sunday when I hope to switch our focus to a good cleaning of daniel and the parts of rocky mountain loop east of forrest service rd 553. Sunday we will be gathering at the Daniel trail head at 8:30am

We should have a few certified sawyers on hand so we should be able to send one your way to help out as needed...

They could actually drive to the camping location on the last switchback (the long one) and park there (just past the turn around hill) without blocking the trail from others... ;) This will make it a little easier when tools come into play...

Let us know if you need any tools or help with anything...

Re: April 2004 work weekend
Any chance of snagging a person or two willing to take a shift passing out fliers at the main entrance? We're planning on trying to cover entrances this weekend with any available volunteers, maybe in 4 hour shifts or so. If anybody is interested, I'll be at the main entrance around 8.

Re: April 2004 work weekend
All of my objectives were met for this weekends work
weekend with minimal people. thanks to everyone who helped out. Saturday Bruce, Taylor, Sherry, Kiersten and I worked on cleaning up the trail head and walking and marking an atv by pass for all of the switch backs on Daniel. we worked for 3 hours. 15 man hours. then Bruce and taylor took off to ride wolf den with the atv. Sherry, Kiersten and i rode up daniel where sherry did a great job driving her stocker up the hill. Then we fought the traffic over to kodak where we saw a Sammi roll onto the drivers side. no one hurt the sammi continued on. I eased up the old middle line by the tree.
sherry powered up the old bypass where the little ledges are now. then it was back to the camp for a quiet evening. Sunday morning we met at the trail head again. It was Bruce, Taylor, Sherry, Kiersten, Ron, Pete M, Dave T, and I. Dave went up to help the rangers with informing people about the new pass system. The rest of us went over to rocky mountain loop and cleaned the parts east of 553. then bruce took taylor and kiersten back around to the daniel side where they
cleaned up to the bottom side of the hill. the rest of us walked in from the top picking up trash. We again worked 3 hours and picked up a good bit of trash and got at least 21 man hours in. so a great productive weekend. thanks to everyone for a sucsessful work weekend. After every one was reunited with there rigs Bruce and taylor headed for home. bruce had to work the evening shift. Ron, Pete, Sherry, and I rode up Daniel. Again everyone did a great job coming up the hill. Again there was alot of traffic on the trails. then it was on to kodak rock. there was plenty of rigs there but everything went smoothly. we were soon up. i again cruised up the easy line. Sherry tried to come up the tree a couple of times but tire height and no lockers defeated her and she again blasted up the old by pass. nice job. Then ron who seemed to doubt me just a bit tried the old tree line and walked his stock rubi right on up. while hanging a left front 3ft in the air. nice job. then pete ran the same line at a ridiclously slow pace showing us just how unchallegening the obstacle really was. awesome job pete. then it was off to 553 and are different ways. thanks again everyone for a
great weekend.
