Best release?
My favourite is "Musick To Play In The Dark vol. 1", but of course there are many others that I love: "The Remote Viewer", "Megalithomania!", "Moon's Milk"...
My two favorites are "Love's Secret Domain" and "Time Machines".
TM is a tricky one to talk about. I dont really consider it Coil, although it is done by all Coil members. I dont really consider it a side-project either. I think it's a stand-alone work, in its own class. An extremely powerful and useful thing. Ideal for many many activities and mental states, though not social music at all. Really powerful.
LSD is a perfect album. Everything- every track, lyric, collaborator, cover art- is perfect. Even more stunning is the fact that it was started in 1987 and eventually released in 1991. Listen to it and you hear where Matmos, Autechre, Surgeon, Aphex Twin and Basement Jaxx took alot of inspiration from. The only track which shows its age is "The Snow", but consider that it is pre-Orbital etc. The remix of that particular track called "Answers Come In Dreams 2" still holds up today; a total dance-club godsend. the track "Dark River" I think, is not only the best song Coil has ever done, but also my favorite song ever.
Both these albums have never got old for me. Always fresh and fascinating.
"Horse Rotorvator" has some great moments, best of all is "Slur". Absolutely stunning song, that.
"Musick to play in the dark, vol. 1" is quite a strong album.
Re: Best albums
Favorites... Right now would have to be Musick to Play In The Dark 1 & 2, Moons Milk (in 4 Phases), and Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil.
Musick 1 is just so amazing... "Red Birds" really is an amazing high point! Musick 2 has "Batwings", so that seals the deal there
Moons Milk has a similar feel to the Musick releases (I think) and I like Coil when they get like this. Very moody and lush. And "Amethyst Deceivers" is one of the best songs they've ever done (IMHO).
Then there's Constant Shallowness... My reason for loving this is the abuse it gives me. It somehow manages to kick the crap out of me and totally entrance me at the same time. The ending "Tunnel Of Goats" is so harsh, yet evolves into a soothing loop that always makes me wave in & out of conciousness.
Yep... those are the ones to make sure you have in your collections
Re: favorites
I found "Scatalogy" least interesting from all "real" Coil albums.
I never liked "Love's Secret Domain" very much, but lately I was started listening to it with a headphones and took a liking to it. Edited by: nothinger at: 4/5/04 9:40 am

I have a feeling ANS is gonna be a bit disappointing too- too slow and droney from what I've heard on Soulseek. Still can't wait to get it, I want DVDs!!!!!!
**well why don't I just kick my legs back and pollute my britches with delight?**
bacchus hath drowned more men than...
{Horse RotorVator} for nostalgic reasons, it has on it thee first song e ever heard by COIL : "ostia (the death of pasolini)", which was deeply moving then (being 12 when i discovered it surely didn't help ), and still remains my favorite song ov ALL times.
but then, e'd say the {Musick to Play in the Dark} are much more mature and coumplete.

I heard my first Coil album in December 03 - Horse Rotorvator - since then i've acquired Scatology, Gold is the metal..., Unnatural History and L.S.D(musick to play in the dark is on route). Now i'm not too sure where to go next, I love all these albums but have heard that some Coil albums are sort of atmospheric/ambient;I have no interest in these. I'm wondering if any of you can suggest where to go next. My favorite Coil tracks are - Slur, Ostia, Blood from air, first five mins...,Restless day, Panic, Solar lodge, For us they will, The broken wheel, Things happen, L.S.D, Chaostrophy,Here to here - does that help? If there is a website with reviews on all/most Coil albums that would also help - if its not too much trouble. Thanks for your time,
a hungry Coil fan.
so many great choices
the solstice/equinox EPs are my personal favorites [including the moon's milk bonus disc ]
my other favorites are Horse Rotovator/ Black Light District/ Angelic Conversation / Astral Disaster/ and Live Four [actually most of the live recordings are amazing!]

Coil Favourites
Hmmm - Coil favourites - where to start?
Well, my favourite favourite is Queens of the Circulating Library - a nice, long, droney piece which leaves me in a dream.
Next comes Constant Shallowness - a superb opener with Higher Beings Command, and one of the most stunning ends, Tunnel of Goats, that also leaves me in a trance but having battered me into one rather than drifted into it like with Queens .. I love playing it really loud in the car - makes any journey fly by!
Next has to be Worship the Glitch - lots of nice, short pieces ...
I've just realised, I could probably list every Coil album in this favourites list, although my preferences are definitely for the instrumental stuff, but then so is my taste in music in general
