Books, books and more books!
Thank ye Iggie for bringing up the topic of "books" within our guild library. I am certain that Krylen and Kalicous meant for this to be a place where we discuss tactics and skills necessary for life [i.e. game stuff!], but what better place to also list all the books that we love to read!
So, my storytellers, what are the stories that ye like to hear??
I love Tolkien, of course, and Terry Pratchett. I also cannot wait to re-read all of Roger Zelazney's (Ohh <pouts> someone spell is name for me!) Chronicals of Amber this summer!
If you get a chance read The Thief by Meagan Whalen Turner. It is an easy read, but contains a great plot twist!
<looks around the library and is quiet certain she can smell bananas> Happy Reading
Okay, shall I begin my list of favorite books or authors?
- Anything by Douglas Adams (may he forever rest in the halls of his fathers), and if you have yet to check it out, The Salmon of Doubt - a collection of many unpublished works of Adams - is available, and is quite good! Especially the Private Life of Genghis Kahn!
- Next there's Tolkein, of course
- C.S. Lewis (save those wretched Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe books... blech)
- Harry Harrison
- Voltaire, a friggin genius in his time! <Thinks about large women sitting crooked because they almost starved until they cut off one cheek of their buttocks to eat and live on, and bursts into teary eyed laughter>
- Miguel De Cervantes! I swear, when I grow old I will be so bumbling as to affix a broken helm to my head and ride around on an emaciated horse, righting wrongs and such.
- William Blake
- Francis Cornford, the Guitarist Tunes Up is amazing
-and lastly, at least for now, anyhow, William Golding
<runs about the library> Blast it! I should have been a mage, so I could "research!"
Hergur Felhammer
Skald of Fimbulvetr
Thor's Thunder

my favourites
The funniest book ever
John Kennedy Toole - A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius O'Reilly is the best character i've met in a book, he is too much of everything
Other books i have enjoyed tremendously
JRR Tolkien - Lord of the Rings, the book made a huge impact on me
Norman Mailer - Harlot's Ghost, one of the best novels i've ever read
Elmore Leonard - Everything he has written, coolest books
Douglas Adams - The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the books about Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, his worlds are amazingly weird
Jerzy Kosinski - Being There, i would like to be as innocent as Mr Garderner is
At the moment i am reading Robert Jordans Wheel of Time books. Which i did enjoy alot in the beginning but now i am just trying to finish the series.
Re: my favourites
1st things I ever read: Piers Anthonony's "Crap"
- Xanth (lil' kids running around naked)
- Adept (half the population running around naked)
- that Tarot card one (egrads, the world was naked)
- Bio of a space Tyrannt (rape, pillage, rape, repeat)
Boy, is that guy a pervert (realized years later).
- Terry Prackett
- Terry Brooks
- Allen Dean Foster
- Robert As--- Myth Series
HATED AUTHORS:
- Margret Hicks and Tracy Weiss <spelled wrong and don't care> Utter CRAP
- Tolkein - ZZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzz (I congratulate the movie makers for making a very boring series, exciting)
- Did I mention Hicks and Weiss? Dragonlance was barely tolerable, then they wrote that Darksword series...CUT OFF THEIR HANDS PLEASE!
I have more favorite authors, but I am once again 3000 miles away from my beloved books.

Re: my favourites
I have read quite a few books in my days while in the military. However, while going through college I found my favorite so far, The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
To my unsatisfaction, I have been waiting on book 10 to come out and have forgotten alot of what was going on since the beginning. May have to start again, while I craft away.

Of course you or anyone else is welcome to visit here and share your thoughts. A few additions to those listed here:
* Sword of Truth series, Terry Goodkind - mature fantasy. Hmmm... who does Kahlan remind you of?
* John Carter of Mars series, Edgar Rice Borroughs - mindless sci fi but Dejah Thoris is yumm!
* Dracula, Brahm Stokker - a classic yet a good read
* Luck in the Shadows, Lynne Flewellyn - first two books, the tried fantasy formula with a twist but an interesting read
* Conan series, Aurthur Conan Doyle (I think it was) - extremely mindless short fantasy novels for a flight or some such
* Thomas Covenant Series, (cant remember) - interesting twists on standard fantasy trio but a good read
* Dune, Frank Herbert - Political intrugue, mind powers, assassins, wars, love, nuclear warfare sci fi. These are some of my favorite things <chuckles> First book is tremendous

Re: my favourites
Favorite authors (In no particular order):
-J. R. R. Tolkein--master of the fantasy novel.
-Tom Clancy--Yeah, some of his stuff lately has been less than, but I'm still a sucker for his earlier books.
-Alexandre Dumas--Say what you want about his writing style, but the man could tell a story. The Count of Monte Cristo remains at the top of my favorites list.
-Tim LaHaye & Jerry B. Jenkins--So sue me, I've really been into the Left Behind series lately. It's an interesting look at end times prophecy.
-Clive Cussler--It surprised me too, but his books are fun to read.
Favorite books (Also in no particular order):
-The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, by J. R. R. Tolkein--I still read through it every once in awhile.
-Wizard's First Rule, by Terry Goodkind--Actually, I like most of the Sword of Truth series, but the first book in the series was the best, in my opinion.
-The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas--Full of errors, poor use of writing conventions, and quite possibly my favorite book of all time.
-The Light Bearer, by Donna Gillespie--Weighing in at over a thousand pages, I found it a fascinatingly quick read.
-The Bourne Identity, by Robert Ludlum--I can't stand much of anything else this man has written, but he did manage to get this book right.
Miscellaneous other favorites (Do I need to say it?):
-Anything on the Arthurian Legends--You are welcome to throw tomatoes at my for my love of Albion fiction, but the Arthurian Legends have been my passion since I was a little kid.
-Stephen King's short stories--I'm not a big fan of his commercial fiction (with the exception of Misery), but his short stories are actually quite good. In particular I like "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption".
-R. A. Salvatore's series on Drizzt--What can I say? The dark elf fascinates me.
-Pretty much anything by Dave Barry--The man cracks me up, no two ways about it.
---------------
And that concludes the tour of the library of my mind. Please be sure to stop at the gift shop on your way out.

Re: Books, books and more books!
Well, being a self-professed bibliophile, I could probably make a list a mile-long here....but don't worry, I won't!
Authors I adore:
Anne Rice
Tolkien
John Steinbeck
Terry Goodkind
Shakespeare (seriously, it's an addiction)
Marquis de Sade (not for the fainthearted or Puritanical)
Amy Tan
Roger Zelazny
Dickens
etc, etc, etc (Variety, da spice of life and all that...)
Books in particular:
The Sleeping Beauty trilogy (Anne Rice)
LOTR (of course!)
Anna Karenina (Tolstoy)
Tortilla Flat (Steinbeck)
The Awakening (Kate Chopin)
1984 (Orwell)
etc, etc, etc
Reading is a major love of mine. If it weren't for this damned computer, I'd do a lot more of it...heehee!
