Christmas Time Leap Diary- Mitalah Kelee
May

Starting classes wasn’t the easiest of things for the prehistoric mutant to take, after all she was used to a one person (or the odd small group every now and then) teaching her new things. The whole big class thing was a little scary for her, plus there was only one teacher there, one teacher for so many kids!!!

Sure, Mitalah only took two different classes, (which some of the other students were jealous of but they weren’t the ones getting used to modern day life) but it was very nerve racking, especially in the first few days. She didn’t really like her Wilderness Activities teacher, Wolverine, all that much, that was mainly due to her wandering mind causing her to wander around, rarely listening to his instructions.

English on the other hand was a little more fun. Her teacher, Mrs. Grey-Summers, was much nicer and although she didn’t spend heaps of time teaching her the ways of the English language, Mitalah enjoyed listening into the teachers speeches and students questions, trying to understand their sentences.

June

With her handle of the English language slowly improving, Xavier stepped in, offering to give her special classes to aid in her learning. Not only did he help with English, but maths. Mitalah learnt to count all the way up to twenty and even learnt addition and subtraction, she liked addition more because she got more jelly beans to eat. Subtraction just took away the yummy lolly, although she didn’t mind the black ones being taken away.

This month also brought along a new friendship, this was with a girl who had a few classes with the mutant, Lauren, who took a seat next to her one English class. The two began talking after Mitalah asked what the guys were doing in the Footy stickers that decorated Lauren’s schoolbooks, although Mitalah talked very little and barely understood what Lauren was on about no matter how much she tried to.

After Lauren tagged along to one lesson with Xavier was she told all about Mitalah. From then on she began talking slower and clearer, even helping out with her after classes and she stopped talking about the weird sport which had began to scare the prehistoric mutant.

July

After seeing many of the other students leaving to go back to their homes for the holidays, if they hadn’t already left, Mitalah began to miss think about her family. At the first sign of missing them, she straight away contacted her long time dead mother with her powers. It had been around two months since they had last talked she began to feel bad for the long gap, although her mother was pleased that her daughter was starting to get along in this world that had changed so much in the thousands of years that passed since the Ice Age.

Also, this month she received a surprise! Her scientist friend, who had been like a father to her since she was ‘defrosted’ had come and took Mitalah back to Canada for the rest of the month. During her stay there she got to go to her favourite wildlife park and play with the birds, which she loved so much.

August

Since she had been having so much fun back in Canada, Mitalah was allowed to stay for a few more weeks, only on the terms that time was spent teaching her so she wouldn’t fall behind when classes resume when she returns.

Once she returned she spent the rest of the month settling back into a life back at the institute, Lauren even came over to her dorm to help her out. While she went back to her home country she had brought some books for Mitalah that were filled with pictures of Aussie Native birds. Her favourite was the Kookaburra since she laughed every time Lauren showed her how they laughed.

September

Returning to her classes wasn’t too bad, since Lauren was in the two classes she took, although she wasn’t in every single English and Wilderness Activity class. Since she never took any classes on the last two days of the school week Mitalah began extra classes with Xavier, although she still had plenty of free time.

During one of her periods of no classes she followed Lauren to her Art class, which wasn’t much of a bother. This was her first ever time in front of a piece of A3 paper with a paintbrush and she wasn’t too sure on what to do but watching what others did she was able to mimic their movements and paint… something. Well, at least she was proud of her colourful thick blobs of paint and scribble, which is now postered up in her dorm.

Talk of Christmas coming up seems to have almost everyone excited, both students and teachers alike, but since she had been discovered in January she had never seen such an event, however she did know of Easter and enjoyed that even though the odd yet great taste of chocolate filled her with energy.

Lauren sat Mitalah down one day and told her about Christmas, in the easiest way possible. She kept out it’s really religious meanings and mainly stuck to Santa and presents.
