Closing Ranks Prologue

“Dawn are you ready yet?” yelled Buffy.

“Almost” said the teenager.

“Look you and Tara have to catch the bus soon. I don’t think she’ll be happy with you if she misses out on the trip,” said Buffy entering her sister’s room.

“I’ll be ready in time” said Dawn rolling her eyes. “You don’t mind me going away with her, do you?”

“Of course not. In fact I think it’ll do you both good to get away,” said Buffy. “Just don’t worry her too much.”

“I won’t” said Dawn. “It’ll be fun.”

*****************

Sandra jumped at the sound of her office door being opened, she looks up to see her partner Agent James Rowland walk in.

“Hey you’re jumpy, who were you expecting at the door. I got your message, what have you got for me,” said James. “Aliens, serial killers, hey I know vampires and demons”

“No wonder we keep getting called Mulder and Scully” said Sandra. “Although it is a strange little story.”

“What a surprise” said James. “We seem to be the FBI’s dumping ground for strange so what is it?”

Sandra ran her hands through her short, neat dreadlocks before pulling a folder open “This case goes back to last year. A little town in California, called Sunnydale, it was hit by a wave of what can only be called madness.”

“Madness?” questioned James.

“Yeah the mental wards were over flowing. It was reported that a young intern who was found dead at a building site did it all. He was found at the bottom of a tower that had been built by said mental patients. It was believed that he was going to lead them all in a mass suicide,” said Sandra.

“I’m not seeing what this has to do with us” retorts James. “I take it he went over first and the rest decided not to follow.”

“That is the way the local police and coroners reports read,” said Sandra.

“So why are we wasting our time…”

“Because I don’t like it. There are too may inconsistencies. For a start if he was causing all these people to lose their minds, with drugs as has been put forward by the police how come only one person went back to normal and funnily enough the one person who went back to normal was also the only victim who was tortured,” said Sandra.

“Tortured?” asked James. Sandra tossed him some x-rays; it showed a hand and wrist that looked almost splintered “Ouch, there are some serious breaks there. Do we know what did that to her? I take it was a women?”

“Yeah” said Sandra and tossed him a picture. “A student at the local university, her name is Tara Maclay, she was 20 at the time of the attack and we have no idea how she managed to receive such extreme breaks. The hospital speculated that her hand was squeezed by something but they couldn’t figure out what it was.”

“Pretty girl” said James picking up the photo. “Were all the victims students?”

“No in fact another strange thing she was also the youngest one and one of the few females. Usually with a young male as the perpetrator you’d expect a lot of the victims to have been young and female ” said Sandra.

“Okay I’ll give you strange for that but I still don’t see what it has to do with us?” said James.

“The local field office are unhappy about the town all round. Did you know it has a higher death rate than Washington? The local police are uncooperative in the extreme. They have had a local high school blow up; it was hardly investigated. There was rumours of military experiments going on there; again denied. Plus when ever anything really big happens these kids are involved” Sandra threw her partner some more photos. “The boy is called Alexander Harris, the redhead is Willow Rosenberg and the blonde is Buffy Summers.”

“Still not seeing…”

“Guess who Tara Maclay’s legal next of kin was?” asked Sandra.

“Mr Harris?”

“No, close though, Miss Rosenberg was her next of kin and they both shared a house with Miss Summers and her younger sister” said Sandra.

“Not anymore?” asked the older man.

“No, she has moved back to the University dorm. Jim, this is political. The directors want to know why the police and the military are keeping secrets from us. These kids would seem the best way to get answers and we have an excuse to go down there and poke around. They have been a close-knit group but with Miss Maclay moving away from the main group she might be the leverage we need to find out what is going on,” explained Sandra.

“So no-one really wants to know what happened last year. It’s just a game of we don’t like it when other agencies might know more than we do, said the older man with a sigh.

“I care, I told you, I think something was covered up and I mean to find out exactly what is going. Plus California in January has to be better than Washington. I could do with getting away from the cold,” said Sandra, her voice momentarily slipping into a slight Jamaican burr that she usually did her best to hide.

James smiled at his younger partner. “I don’t suppose we have any choice. When do we leave?”

“Tonight, the flights are booked, you better get home and pack” said Sandra.

Closing Ranks part 1

“Hey Dawnie, I thought you had changed your mind for a moment” said Tara as she watched Dawn bustle towards her.

“Are you sure you don’t mind don’t mind having her?” asked Buffy.

“Of course not, we’ll have fun,” said Tara smiling.

“Will I learn to do spells and stuff” said Dawn excitement shinning in her eyes.

“No” said Tara sharper than she meant, “It will be about meditation, healing and learning about Wicca as a religion but there will be no spells.”

Both Dawn and Buffy looked stunned for a moment but quickly recovered knowing the blonde had far from recovered from her break up with Willow.

“T-that sounds really cool” said Dawn putting an arm round Tara’s shoulder. “I’m so looking forward to spend time with you. Hey the bus is here”

The two older girls watched smiling as Dawn grabbed the rucksacks and stood in the line with the bags.

“I mean it you know. I hope she won’t be too much of a problem for you” said Buffy

“She’ll be fine,” said Tara “and I’m umm sure you and Willow could do with some time to yourselves”

“Tara…”

“Buffy please don’t, I don’t want to think about her right now, I just want go, enjoy the retreat and have some quality time with Dawn” said Tara hugging Buffy and then following her young companion onto the camp’s site beat up old bus.

Buffy waved and watched the bus depart a small part of her sad that she didn’t seem to have the closeness with Dawn that Tara had but a bigger part of her glad that her sister would always have Tara to care for her.

*********************************

“Now listen to me, if you meet someone in town you’re not sure of just don’t invite them in,” said the motel owner to Sandra and James.

The two agents gawped openly at guy who was showing them their rooms

“Don’t invite them in?” asked James.

“Well it’s probably okay if you see them during the day but if it’s at night…”

“Oh,” said Sandra. “I get it. No nighttime guests in our rooms, you don’t have to worry about that we are here strictly on business.”

The manager walked away shaking his head “That is not what I meant at all”

“This is one strange place,” said James.

Sandra looked round the room “ I don’t know seems like ever other crappy motel room we’ve stayed in”

“I suppose so and a t least I’m next door just in case you decide to invite anyone back to your room” said James grinning at his partner as they enter her room and close the door. “What’s next on the agenda?”

“I thought tomorrow morning we would rouse Ms Maclay from her dorm and see what she has to say for herself” said Sandra.

“Isn’t she the victim rather than any sort of perpetrator?” asked James

“Yes, but I think she knows a lot of what’s gone. Anyway James have a goodnight’s sleep and remember don’t invite anyone in” said Sandra giving her partner a wicked grin.

***************************

The two agents stood outside Tara’s dorm room banging the door. Eventually the student from the next room poked his head out. “Are you looking for Tara?” he asked.

“Yes we are” said James. “Have you any idea where she is?”

“I don’t think she came home last night. I’d check her friend Buffy’s house or if The Magic Box is open, she could be there.” Said the student.

“Thanks for your help” said Sandra as the two FBI agents turned and walked away.

***************************

“The Magic Box?” asked James as he opened the rental car’s door.

“Interesting,” said Sandra flicking through her notes as she got into the passenger seat. “It belongs to Xander Harris’s fiancé Anya Jenkins and on the night when that intern took his tumble Ms Jenkins was admitted to Sunnydale General with head injuries and a suspected broken ankle. Tara was also re-admitted because somehow her plaster had managed to come off her hand and it was on that visit that it was also noticed that Miss Maclay had had her sanity back.”

“So we go and shake them up at the magic shop and sees what drops out,” said James.

“Sounds like a plan” said Sandra.

**************************

“Enjoy” said Anya desperately trying to get rid of the customer who had made a small purchase but had been bombarding her with questions over books that could be ordered in by the shop. While she had been serving the customer two official looking people had walked in and they were making her feel nervous. Her initial thought was that they were probably from The Watchers Council. She eyed them over the customers shoulder; they were both smartly dressed in suits. One male one female

Anya watched anxiously as the male of the duo approached her. He was tall in his late thirties with short, clipped, sandy coloured hair.

“Anya Jenkins?” he inquired.

“Yes, who wants to know?” asked Anya feeling uneasy by the fact he knew her name.

The younger female approached. She looked in her late twenties, a striking black woman with hair in neat short dreadlocks pulled off an angular face. She walked with a cat like grace and Anya felt more threatened by the woman because she could see the intelligence in her serious brown eyes.

“Hello, Ms Jenkins. We are from the F.B.I. my name is agent special Sandra Davidson and this is my partner agent special James Rowland,” said Sandra. “We’d like to ask you a few questions”

“F.B.I?” asked Anya almost choking on her words. “You know I’m only a junior partner in the shop and my SENIOR partner is overseas.”

“It’s not about the shop” said James.

“Oh good,” said Anya. “Fire away then because I’m an ordinary, upstanding, patriotic American with nothing to hide.”

Sandra laid her head to one side finding the woman’s way of talking very strange. “We want to ask you about one of your patrons and I believe a close friend of yours a Miss Tara Maclay.”

“T-Tara has something happened to her because she is going to be my matron of honour. Is she okay? She wasn’t in an accident with Dawn? I better call Buffy” said Anya getting more and more agitated.

“Ma’am nothing had happened to Miss Maclay, as far as we know, we are looking into the incidents of last year when she was attacked,” said James.

Anya stared at the two agents taken aback by the line of questioning “I don’t understand?”

“We’d like to know what happened to her?” asked Sandra.

“Ben, he attacked her” said Anya feeling panicked

“That’s the official story” said James. “Do you know how she got back to normal?”

“No I…it most have been a miracle?” asked Anya hopefully.

The two agents exchanged looks “Did it not seem odd to you that only Miss Maclay went back to normal?” asked Sandra.

“To be honest, I didn’t care. It’s a fault of mine; I’ve been told I’m self-centred. It was one of worst things I ever had to go through. I helped Willow look after her,” said Anya with a shudder. “My best friend was like a cabbage; do you know what that’s like? So I’m sorry if it offends you but I don’t care about the rest. I was just happy to have Tara back.”

“You received some injuries about the same time as the intern died, the guy who hurt your best friend?” said James leaving the question in the air.

“I tripped and fell,” said Anya defensively. “I don’t understand, are you trying to accuse me of something and I don’t understand why you are interested in Tara; she was a victim. She has done nothing wrong.”

“I’m sorry we are just trying to get a picture of what happened. We are not convinced that the local police had the full facts,” said James watching closely for any reaction from the shopkeeper. He got it as she made a sharp intake of breath “Also where did you say Miss Maclay has gone to; with Dawn I think you said”

“I didn’t” said Anya “But there’s no mystery. They’ve gone to a Wiccan retreat for the weekend”

“Okay thank you Miss Jenkins. We’ll be in touch,” said James.

Sandra walked after her partner quietly seething wondering why her partner had given away the reason behind their investigation before they had a chance to interview Tara. As they exited the shop she couldn’t contain her anger. “What the hell did you say that for Jim? I thought we weren’t going to reveal to much…”

“Do you want a coffee?” asked James giving her a sweet smile and walked across the road to the Espresso Pump.

Sandra hurried after him totally infuriated “Have you gone insane?” she hissed through gritted teeth.

“Two cappuccinos please, do you want anything to eat?” he said turning to his partner.

“No” said Sandra.

“Okay, nothing for the lady but I’d like some pancakes and bacon please” said James pleasantly to the waitress before making towards a table with a good view of The Magic Box.

“Jim what’s going on?” asked Sandra.

“I thought we would just sit here and get a good view of the fireworks,” said James.

“Fireworks?” questioned Sandra and as on cue Xander Harris’s car pulled up outside the shop and the young man practically sprinted into the shop.

“I wonder how long it will take for the others to turn up?” asked James softly. “I think we should take a step back until Miss Maclay arrives back from her nice weekend and just watch the rest of the group. We’ve managed to rattle them and the more they’re rattled the more we will get…oh here comes Miss Summers moving at a pretty good clip just to prove my point. I think we’ve got a few things we can clarify at the hospital and with the local police for the time being and here is Miss Rosenberg, seems like we have a full set.”

*********************

“Okay we are all here” said Buffy. “Spill Anya what is so important because I had to lie to the Doublemeat and say that Dawn was taken ill.”

“I’ve just had a visit from the F.B.I,” said Anya.

“F.B.I why? Has Giles got stuff that he shouldn’t…”

“They want to know about Tara,” said Anya.

“Tara?” asked Willow looking interested at last.

“Not just Tara they are investigating Ben’s death and why Tara was the only person to get her sanity back” said Anya. “And they now about us. They suggested that I had something to do with Ben’s death because I was a friend of Tara’s.”

“Did they ask about Dawn?” asked Buffy.

“No” said Anya. Although they know about Tara being away with Dawn.”

“How?” asked Buffy angrily.

“I may have inadvertently told them” said Anya shamefaced. “Buffy what do we do? This could be serious if they work out we were all there when Ben died.”

“Right” said Buffy. “We have to stick together, get all our stories straight. When Tara gets home she’ll have to move back into our house.”

“I’ll move into my parents house” said Willow. “It’ll make things easier.”

“”No Will, we have to be together on this. We have to stick together. As long as we are strong nothing can happen to us” said Buffy mentally crossing her fingers but feeling happy to have an excuse to look to after everyone.

Closing Ranks part 2

Dawn pulled her blanket up over herself, hoping sleep would arrive but knowing she was still top excited.

She had enjoyed the whole weekend and in a way she didn’t want too go home. She had enjoyed all the activities. Another thing had surprised she had expected the camp to be made up of mostly women and girls but it had been full of families. There had been a few women there with their daughters and she had felt a close bond to some of those. She felt so close to Tara and some of the girls there had just presumed that she was Dawn’s elder sister, but Dawn told them that after her mother had died, Tara had become her guardian. She even confessed to one girl she had become particularly close to, that Tara was her adoptive mother. Dawn knew it was a sort of lie but during the summer that’s what she had felt for both Tara and Willow.

She wanted them to get back together but just couldn’t work out how she could do it. Dawn felt herself start to drift off to sleep when she hear a strange keening noise coming from Tara’s bed. “Tara are you okay?” Dawn listened but there was no reply just a soft crying sound “Tara? Answer me are you okay?”

The teenager felt fear gripping her. She walked unsteadily across the room to Tara’s bed “Tara are you okay?” she gripped the witch’s shoulder and shook her gently “W-what’s wrong?”

She looked into Tara’s face. Her eyes were wide open but totally sightless and Dawn could see Tara’s right hand clenching and unclenching convulsively. Dawn listened intently realizing the noises were actual words.

“Can’t tell…must protect Dawn, Glory can never find out…must protect…oh god please Willow save me…Willow where are you?”

Dawn reeled back in shock; Tara was having a nightmare, re-living Glory’s vicious attack on her. The teenager shook the blonde harder trying desperately to wake her from her nightmare experience “Please, Tara wake up” but to no avail. The mumbling, crying and convulsive clenching of her fist carried on. She could hear Tara pleading for Willow to save her and Dawn felt like her heart was shattering into a thousand pieces “Tara wake up please, please wake up”

“Willow, where’s Willow?” A bead of sweat appeared on Tara’s forehead and her whole body seemed to go rigid. “Just kill me don’t…I don’t want to be mad…Please Willow save me”

Dawn felt the panic subside she knew what to do “It’s okay I’m here, nothing is going to hurt you”

“Willow?” whispered Tara.

“Yes, baby, now go to sleep,” said Dawn tenderly brushing a hair from Tara’s face. The teenager sat there for over an hour stroking Tara’s face and when she was sure her guardian had fallen to an untroubled sleep, she kissed her softly on the forehead and padded quietly to her own bed. Dawn lay awake for most of the night concerned in case Tara’s nightmares returned.

****************

Tara and Dawn breakfasted early before catching the bus back home.

Dawn sat quietly looking out through the window her arm linked through Tara’s. The blonde witch was wondering what was going through her travel companion’s head. They had always had a tactile relationship but this morning Dawn taken it to an extreme that could almost be called clingy.

“Dawn what’s wrong? Did you enjoy the weekend?” asked Tara.

“Yeah, it was great and part of me wishes we could stay and not go home,” said Dawn still looking out the window.

Tara remained silent figuring if Dawn wanted to talk about what was going on her head, she would.

“Tara?” asked Dawn tentatively.

“Hmm” said the witch.

“I love you, you know,” said Dawn.

“Dawn is something wrong?” asked Tara growing more concerned.

“No, it’s I don’t think I tell you enough. I think we all expect you to be there for us, but no one asks about you or tells you what you mean to us… I don’t know…I think it was the same with mom,” said Dawn.

“Dawn if there is something, please tell me,” said Tara.

“Nothing” said Dawn lapsing into silence. She hadn’t slept well the night before. She supposed she always knew that Tara was protecting her from Glory when she was brain sucked but she hadn’t really thought of the sacrifice Tara had made for her.

It scared the teenager when she had thought deeply about the summer before. Two people had loved her so much that one had sacrificed her life and the other her sanity. It was overwhelming to Dawn. The teenager was not able to quite comprehend that level of feeling. It scared her and she felt unworthy.

One thing Tara’s nightmare had done for Dawn though was make her resolve to get Willow and Tara together even greater. She knew now that Tara still needed Willow. She jutted her chin out in determination armed with this information.

Tara was puzzled by Dawn’s behavior but not particularly worried. She had enjoyed her break and wasn’t really looking forward to going back to her lonely dorm room.

**********************

Buffy leaned against her mother’s old car. She and Xander had spent the morning moving Tara’s stuff back into the Summer’s house and she had a few boxes of clothes in the back as she waited for the bus to arrive at the campus.

She watched it pull into the lot and gave her sister and Tara a hug when the disembarked. “Hey, I’ve missed you both.”

“Hey Buffy” said Tara who was surprised to see the slayer lift Dawn and her bags and head to the car. “Buffy you’ve umm…picked up my bag too.”

“Yes” said Buffy as she stored the bags in the trunk.

“Buffy, why is my stuff in the car? Has something happened to W-willow?” asked Tara.

“No, nothing like that” said Buffy.

“But…”

“You have to move back into the house,” said Buffy. “It’s all arranged.”

“Dawn, can you get into the car while I talk to Buffy” said Tara her anger barely concealed.

“K” said the teenager.

The two women waited until Dawn had got into the car before they carried on.

“Tara before you say anything I had no choice in the matter…”

“No choice? How dare you interfere in my life like that Buffy?” asked Tara crossing her arms protectively in front of her.

Buffy put her hand on Tara’s arm. “It’s not like that, the F.B.I have been asking questions about you”

“M-me” said Tara. “I d-d, I don’t understand. W-why would they want know about m-me?”

“Because of Glory. Tara they’re asking questions about why you recovered from the mind suck and no one else did. They’ve been asking questions in the magic box” said Buffy and then shamefully playing her final card knowing it would get Tara to agree to move in. “We can’t let them know about Dawn. We have to stick together,”

“Okay” said Tara. “But I’m moving out the moment they’ve gone.”

“Absolutely” said Buffy with a grin on her face “NO pressure.”

*************************

James and Sandra watched the interaction from a distance.

“Looks like Tara isn’t going to be the easy target we thought” said James.

“Yes”-said Sandra. “Looks like they are closing ranks, but if there has been problems between them, forcing them close together could bring us some good results.”

“When do you want to talk to Ms. Maclay?” asked James.

“Let her stew for a few days. I think we might go to Mr. Harris’s building site first, then Ms. Summer’s workplace before we move onto Ms. Rosenberg. I think by that time Ms. Maclay may be ready to talk,” said Sandra with a grim smile.

***********************

Buffy, Dawn, Willow and Tara sat around a mostly awkward and silent dinner table.

“I’m going upstairs to study,” said Tara. “Are you sure you don’t mind Dawn?”

“Of course not, you can have my room as long as you want,” said Dawn.

It had been decided that Tara would move into Dawn’s room and the teenager share with her sister. At first both Willow and Tara had offered to sleep on the couch, but this seemed to be the most sensible plan.

Tara went to go upstairs but was intercepted by Willow. “Tara, I’m sorry”

“Sorry?” said Tara. “Willow, this isn’t your fault.”

“I should never…I wish you hadn’t got involved…”

“With you?” asked Tara stress and a slight edge of hysteria sounding in her voice. “You regret being with me?”

“Tara, god, no” said Willow. “I just wished you had never got involved with the gang. I never wanted you to get hurt”

“A bit late for that” said Tara pushing past Willow with tears in her eyes.

Willow turned and walked back to the sitting room where Buffy was pulling on her jacket. “You going out?”

“I’ve got to patrol,” said Buffy.

“Buffy, I don’t think this is going to work,” said Willow.

“What’s not going to work?” asked the slayer.

“Tara and I living under the same the roof” said Willow. “She…its really hard Buffy. I just want her back so much.”

“Then use this to your advantage” said Buffy. “Show her how much you’ve changed. She still loves you. You just have to persuade to come back to stay. I know you can do it. Will, I have to go now but we’ll talk, later?”

“Sure Buffy” said Willow not as convinced as the slayer that it would be so easy to get her former lover back.

********************

Willow settled down on the couch and listlessly flicked between the channels her mind unable to concentrate on anything.

Dawn watched from the hall. She had been trying to work out when would be the best time to approach Willow and tell her about Tara’s nightmare and she decided that there was no time like the present. “Hey, Willow what you doing?”

“ Just watching some TV. Are you staying in tonight?” asked Willow.

“Yeah, in fact I wanted to talk to you,” said Dawn.

“What about?” asked Willow.

“I was worried about Tara,” said Dawn.

Willow, looked up quickly at the mention of her ex-girlfriends name. “What about Tara?”

“When we were away she had this horrible nightmare. She kept mentioning Glory and how she wanted you to save her. I tried to wake her up but I couldn’t. I…I pretended I was you to settle her down. It was horrible,” said Dawn shivering.

Willow pulled Dawn on to the sofa and gently hugged the upset teenager. “Did she…did you talk with her about?” said Willow her voice cracking slightly, hating the idea of Tara feeling hurt in anyway.

“That was the weird thing about it; the next day she didn’t seem to remember anything and I wasn’t sure what to say,” said Dawn.

“Oh, she would have remembered,” said Willow. “She always remembered; she just hoped no one else heard her.”

“It happened before?” asked Dawn.

Willow nodded “She started to have them almost as soon as she recovered from Glory’s attack. Some nights we didn’t get any sleep. As the summer wore they started to get less frequent and after Buffy…came back, they had practically stopped.” Willow was staring into space not really talking to the teenager but lost in her own memories.

“Why do you think she is having them again?” asked Dawn.

“It’s obvious,” said Willow. “It’s another one of my screw ups. My messing with her mind probably did this. Why did I do it Dawn? She must hate me.”

“Will, if she hates you how come I could only calm her by pretending to be you? She needs you,” said Dawn.

“I don’t think…”

“She does,” said Dawn. “Why don’t you go and talk to her about it?”

“No,” said Willow. “If she needs me, she’ll come to me.”

“But…”

“I think it’s better that way. I don’t want to crowd her,” said Willow.

Dawn sighed in frustration; she had hoped that Willow would go to Tara. The teenager was undaunted though. She was determined that she would have her surrogate parents together again.
