Cousin Mitch shows up.(anyone welcome to post)
Golden eyes looked out at the institute as the cab pulled up. Mitch was lost in thought, wondering how his cousin was doing here and more importantly, how much trouble he had gotten into already. He absently unloaded himself and his luggage from the cab, paid the driver, and started walking up to the front door of the Institute.
I don't care so much if they can teach me to control my power. I just hope they have some pants that won't tear to shreds when I grow. It is humiliating growing to fifteen feet tall and being stark naked. the young man thought to himself. He had some tools and electronic equipment with him, and some designs for various equipment. He had an idea of how to make a fabric that would stretch when he gained height, but he didn't have enough money to fund such a venture.
Looking at the grounds of the Institute, Mitch saw a beautiful green yard, several horses, and a small lake with boats on it. Maybe Jordan isn't in trouble. There seems to be enough here to keep him busy. Mitch dismissed this thought almost immediately. He knew his younger cousin to well to believe that he could stay out of trouble.
Even though a year and a half older than Jordan, Mitch still seemed younger. Mitch was three or four inches shorter, but he had a lot more muscle, muscular definition and broader shoulders from his routine of using boxing training to stay in shape. He also did not wear a lot of cowboy gear like Jordan did, but instead showed up in carpenter jeans, a white t-shirt, and a open red flannel shirt with a pair of running shoes. If anything, Mitch had a few days growth of beard and mussed black hair that normally would make him look older. It was hard to narrow down why he seemed younger until you looked at both cousins when they were together. Mitch's golden eyes still had innocence in them. Jordan's brown eyes looked like he had carved out his innocence and left it to die on some rotting floor.
I wonder if this place has access to any science labs. If not, I hope they have a mechanical shop somewhere so i can play around some. Invention and experimentation were two of Mitch's favorite things to do. There was just something about having an idea and working on it until completion that appealed to Mitch.
Mitch opened the front door, and looked in. The place seemed like any other private school, and Mitch asked in a moderately toned but kind and curious voice Hello? I'm sort of new here and need to know where to go. Sorry for bothering anyone.Edited by: Hank at: 10/5/05 11:04 pm
Re: Cousin Mitch shows up.(anyone welcome to post)
Jamie had given himself Thursday evening to refamiliarize himself with the mansion and reaquaint himself with a few of his old mates. Friday morning, however, he threw himself into his work. Several Madrox had left his (for the moment) sparse room at the crack of dawn. Splitting up, Jamie went to work in the garden, the laundry room, and the halls of the mansion. The Core had stayed in his room, pouring over some the paperwork Scott had somewhat reluctantly handed over the previous morning. Much of it was work orders for around the school - requests for this squeaky door to be fixed or that window to be unstuck. In themselves trivial, they did nothing to help lighten the staff's workload. While a supernaturally agile Hank McCoy could easily clean the gutters, where was he supposed to find the time? These were jobs Jamie was more than willing do.
Unfortunately, even a multitasker as capable as Jamie was prone to slip ups. One of the few tasks in which time was of the essence was the meet-and-greet of a new student, one Mitch Williams. The paper announcing the student's arrival had been set aside so it would not be forgotten, along with a brief description of the young man that Jamie'd glanced over. Of course, he had ironically forgotten about it because it had not been in the other stack of papers.
So it was, five minutes after nine o'clock, that a Jamie found himself nearly running through the dorms towards the front door. The Core Jamie remained in his makeshift office, sorting and doling out the work from a fat stack. Was this new duplicate being slighted, being sent to do the work while the original stayed behind? Heck no. Jamie much prefered the manual labor over the mental labor.
As he reached the top of the impressive staircase leading down into the foyer, Jamie slowed himself to a pressed but respectable pace, one that would communicate the importance he held in this meeting without compromising his dignity... there'd be plenty of time for that later.
"Hello? I'm sort of new here and need to know where to go. Sorry for bothering anyone." The voice wafted up from the bottom of the stairs, making him wince. Naturally it was the one teenager in the northern hemisphere that actually showed up on time. Oh well... it was a good thing, really, and he sounded like a polite guy boot.
"No bother at all - we were expecting you. Mitch Williams, right?" Jamie bounced down the stairs full of pep and vigor, as bright and smiling as one could get without earning either a cheerleader uniform or a straightjacket. Hitting the ground floor, a hand shot out in welcome. "Jamie Madrox, resident Jack of all trades, at your service. Call me Jamie."
"Can I grab some of those bags from you, or... " A vision passed behind Jamie's eyes of a little sticky note attached to Mitch's bio. "You wouldn't happen to be bringing any questionable items into the school, would ya? I don't mean to start anything, of course, but apparently there was a minor issue with a previous student and yada yada... I'm sure you understand." A roll of the eyes kept the matter on the lighter side. No need to offend just yet.
Re: Cousin Mitch shows up.(anyone welcome to post)
Mitch was glad to see that his greeter was not the sour and dour type. Odds were if he was to spend any time with his cousin, Mitch would be getting all of the gloom and doom he cared for. He stuck out his hand and shook Jamie's, noticing that it was a good solid grip. Mitch's odd golden eyes gleamed with a good natured humor he had a broad smile on his face reflecting his general good humor. Guilty as charged. Guess you're the poor guy stuck showing me around.
The saddest part of this meeting was that Mitch was already getting all of his stuff ready to be inspected before Jamie even asked about contraband. Mitch was far from stupid. His intellect was actually closer to the genius end of the spectrum, even if he rarely showed it. Since Jordan had recently arrived at this school, the biggest reason they would be looking for weapons would be Jordan trying to smuggle some weapons in.
Looking down and shaking his head in mild disgust at his cousin's odd obsession with weapons, Mitch said You mean do I have any weapons. The closest I have are some tools and a Swiss Army Knife. I don't do weapons as a general rule cause I'm clumsy with blades and am too jumpy when firing handguns. This was very true. Mitch had one time literally shot himself in the foot when Jordan tried to show him how to draw a gun. In any case, Mitch was a pugilist instead, preferring to use his fists in a fight if he was forced to.
Raising his head, Mitch looked Jamie straight in the eye and said in the most serious of voices I'm willing to bet that the reason you are suspicious is that some nutjob cousin of mine who looks like he's from the old west came in with enough weapons to start a new world war. He mentioned that I have some skill at making all sorts of items, the only sort he cares about being those with leathal applications. Borderline psychotic anachronistic cowboy. The last line in that rant Mitch grumbled to himself more than to Jamie.
Mitch was also meaning to have a serious talk with Jordan. Mitch knew that part of the reason Jordan was so paranoid about weapons recently was the incident that happened at Jordan's last school, but Mitch had looked over part of what happened and something wasn't making sense to him. Or rather he didn't want this one aspect to make sense. Mitch knew one thing. There was no way a six foot tall guy could shoot another six foot tall guy through the top of the head from ten feet away like the police report said. In any case, Mitch was starting to get a little steamed at his little cousin for trying to bring heat into a school. He sighed and said in a soft voice When will that idiot learn that this isn't Texas in 1880?

"Good to know I won't have to worry about you, then. I'm not exactly sure how strict other instructors are, so let's not wave the pocketknife around too much, okay?" Rhetorical question. Jamie had immediately taken a liking to this newcomer and decided to give him some leeway. The guile and warmth the kid demonstrated were traits Jamie himself held in high esteem. Perhaps he was being unprofessional, but he wasn't going to be any harder on the new student than he had to be.
Listen to Mitch's description of his cousin forced Jamie to quirk an eyebrow. The note he'd been given was simple, merely stating that the new arrival had to be checked for contraband due to issues with the previous student. Madrox hadn't been around the school long enough or talked to enough folks to know any details, let alone the relationship between the two students.
"That sounds like a good enough reason to me... you wouldn't believe how many people pack heat like that nowadays" Cable. Deadpool. Domino. Three names came to mind in milliseconds, and Jamie was sure it wouldn't take much longer to develop a sunstantial list. Truth be told, the guntoters always made him nervous. They tended to have really itchy triggerfingers. For that reason he was extremely greatful he'd been assigned to welcome Mitch rather than the other cousin.
"So can I give you a hand with those bags?" He was compelled to simply snap his fingers, create a duplicate, and scoop up the luggage, but courteous manners won out. He'd help only if it was accepted. "What would you care for, Mitch? Some grub? A shower? Or would you like to get straight into the grand tour?" Jamie laid out the options, allowing Mitch to choose. Part of it was to help him get comfortable, but the truth was Jamie wasn't exactly sure what to do now himself.
Re: Cousin Mitch shows up.(anyone welcome to post)
Mitch was surprised that Jamie was willing to take his word alone that he had no weapons. Mitch had told the truth, but he was used to being looked at with suspicion just because of guilt by association. I wouldn't mind having some help with these Mitch said motioning to his bags, I probably shouldn't have brought almost every tool I own. But I hate it if something breaks down and I don't have what I need to fix it.
Mitch thought about what he wanted to see first. He was a little hungry, but he wasn't famished and he was used to going without food whenever he was working on something. He still felt a little stiff from the car ride, so he said I think that I would like to see where everything is first. After a few hours in a car, I really need to stretch my legs some.
Mitch wondered how to approach a subject that he was wondering about. Mitch had the pwoer to grow to greater sizes, but this power also tended to tear up his clothes pretty bad. He had an idea about how to make a fabric that could stretch with him, but he didn't have the funds to make it. Mitch was willing to bet that the school had some students with similar problems, and wondered if they might have some ideas. Sir, this might not be the most appropriate time to ask, but my power is a little hard on clothing. I was wondering if the school had some sort of material that could stretch when I practiced with my power. A smile stretched out Mitch's lips showing his amusement for the whole world to see. And I don't think that the world is ready to see a giant naked guy running around. It isn't exactly the most pretty of sights for most guys.

"I think that I would like to see where everything is first. After a few hours in a car, I really need to stretch my legs some."
"Wonderful! The grand tour!" Jamie was inwardly tickled at his guest's decision. A captive audience was an opportunity no Madrox could pass by. Reaching for the nearest piece of luggage, he paused as the youth, seemingly hesitant, ever so politely spoke up.
"Sir, this might not be the most appropriate time to ask, but my power is a little hard on clothing. I was wondering if the school had some sort of material that could stretch when I practiced with my power. And I don't think that the world is ready to see a giant naked guy running around. It isn't exactly the most pretty of sights for most guys."
Jamie threw his head back and laughed at the boy's predicament. Of course it wasn't a mean spirited laughter. As a mutant long surrounded by other mutants and unusual wonders, he was well aware of the potential for embarassment some mutations possessed. Plus the thought of a naked giant streaking through the crowded school was just too darn funny in and of itself. Reigning in his mirth, Jamie mimicked Mitches own bemused smile.
"Young lad, we may have just the thing you're looking for..." Lacing his fingers together, the older mutant cracked his knuckles with an impressive audibility. More crackling came from his neck as he nearly touched an ear to either should, making a completely unnecessary spectacle of himself. The unsuspecting witness might simply think he was exaggerating before helping with the luggage. As he limbered up, he continued. "You're hardly the first fella to worry about tearing his threads to shreds. The world is, speaking in relative terms, full of folks with that same worry. Or at least it would be. Have you ever heard of 'unstable molecules'? If you're lucky enough to have a wardrobe full of it, you'll never worry again. The molecules do what the wearer does... I'm not the guy to give you a real technical answer, I'm afraid. When you meet Dr. McCoy, perhaps he'll explain.
"But the jist of it is, it allows a man to do things like this..." Jamie snapped his fingers nearly in quick succession. In the blink of an eye, one man had become three. "...and not end up bareback."
His demonstration over, Jamie turned to his newfound dopplegangers. "If you gentlemen wouldn't mind taking Mitch's bags? Check the memo to see what room he'll be using. Make sure it's straightened up and all that. Thanks. You guys are awesome." With a few nods and affirming words, two of the triplets disappeared up the stairs with the luggage, leaving a single host for Mitch once more. Watching his others retreat, Jamie chuckled.
"Good help's easy to find. I don't know what people're talkin' about.
"Don't worry, we'll be sure to talk to Dr. McCoy about getting you some 'fitting' apparel. Anyway, Mitch, if you'd be good enough to follow me. First stop, public rec room." Swinging a leg around casually, Jamie began an amiable walk down the hall. "Might as well start with the fun stuff."
((So sorry for the wait... not sure if you're interested in continuing this. We could hop, skip, and jump around the Institute, or perhaps you'd like to segway into a thread with someone else? I'm sure the game room'll have an occupant or two...))
Re: Cousin Mitch shows up.(anyone welcome to post)
Mitch was glad to see that his guide appreciated his sense of humor. "Young lad, we my have just the thing you're looking for. You're hardly the first fella to worry about tearing his threads to shreds. McCoy, perhaps he'll explain."
Mitch had heard of unstable moulecules before. An invention of Reed Richards, the material in essence acted like a persons skin, giving the material similar abilities to the wearer. Mitch was wondering how the school had managed to get a hold of it considering that Richards had the patent for the material.
Mitch was amazed when he saw Madrox split into duplicates. He couldn't help but theorize out loud about how the duplicates could work. "Amazing. It seems as if they work through a process of massive cellular mitosis. Is it swift enough for the duplicates to retain your memories and skills? Of course, they would have to or they would have to relearn everything, from how to walk to speech! Can you also reabsorb the duplicates? That would imply that any gained knowledge would also transfer back into you."
Thinking about what he just said, Mitch put his head in his hands and said "Crap, I went into super nerd mode again."
(OOC Either way is fine by me. We can keep going with this thread if you want. But if you are looking at time restrictions, we can shut it down if we need to.)
