DAAS Doug Anthony Allstars
Inspired by the talk of FEL on GNW hosted by ex-DAAS member Paul McDermott, I was curious as to whether there were any FEL fans who appreciated the Allstars in those glorious days of '89 til' their eventual disbanding in '94 ?
I was a particular heavy DAAS-Head owning every bit of extraneous merchandise pumped out, which to their credit, was always immersed in creativity i.e. Novels,COMICS, LP'S, Self -designed T-shirts,Posters and stickers.......to name but a few.
I had the pleasure in meeting all 3 Dougs; Tim Ferguson, Richard Fidler and Paul during those heady DAAS years and they were endearing, accomodating guys, catering to some truly f-ucking whacked out requests from fans who wanted signatures on all matter and objects. And despite a raised eyebrow, they acquiesced.
And yes, whilst the Allstars were never a WORLDWIDE phenomenon, despite an incredibly diverse following the world over, the respect they were endowed by Australia and the UK public in particular (which was particularly massive) could have easily given them a self-opinioniated license to be a lot more brutal with fans, but they never succumbed to that mentality.
Forever gracious and respectful.
I always remember Tim saying to hold onto your copyright and that whatever you produce, be it book or tune, that to get anything done, you have to do it yourself or nothing would ever get done and the reward for your commitment would be far greater than the mercenary value.
I was crazy about the Dougs back in the days of the Big Gig. I was pretty young at the time, but i remember staying up kinda late and watching those guys kick it hardcore. i actually got to see them live in 1991 and boy did i piss my dacks, i never got to meet the guys but i am glad to hear that they weren't the total arseholes their on stage persona would have allowed them to be. I did recently run into mr mcdermott at a comedy festival do and was able to briefly thank him for the years of twisted moral guidence he gave me through the goggle box.
i do think it was kinda ironic how tim ferguson went for the big 'don't forget your toothbrush' pay day and ended up doing a clip show on ch10 and paul went back to the abc and ended up being one of the biggest 'on air talents' at ch10. i wonder if they ever got together for a custard tart at the caffeteria or something.
