Daughter, age 6 with chronic anterior uveitis
Hello.
Several months ago I noticed a cloudy spot on our 6 year old daughter's eye. The only thing that I recall is that two weeks prior she had chicken pox, with a very high fever and was screaming at the top of her lungs "my eyes, my eyes"...and we were about to take her to the ER but she fell asleep, so we didn't. Two weeks later when I saw the cloudy spot (band keratonomy) I asked her if her vision was blurry and she said no, but she saw tiny black bugs flying around in her eye. We called some eye doctors and Children's Mercy Hospital had an opening in the opthamology dept. right away. We found out that she has anterior uveitis in both eyes, and has had it for quite a while they said. They said she had it before the chicken pox because there was scarring and damage already. Her vision was 20/20 then. We have been on the whole atropine/pred forte eye drop wean off recheck go back on roller coaster...this is our second time on the drops and at this point they are having her take the drops once a day for six weeks. They sent her to a pediatric rheumatologist and diagnosed JRA, which explains a lot of the crying and foot pain she has had for the past 14 months. The doctor I took her to for foot pain first saw the swelling and said she had turf toe, then the next time I took her in they said she was manipulating me to be picked up because the swelling had gone. We have carried her a lot anyway, because we didn't believe that she was manipulating us. The rheumatologist thinks that she needs to walk and rest, rather than be carried to build up her endurance. Her toes, ankles (achilles tendon), wrists, knees, and spine hurt. She refuses to brush her teeth because it hurts to hold a toothbrush. Currently she is not on any drugs for the arthritis, and even with up to five hours of crying and screaming a day, they consider the arthritis mild. We rub her feet and other joints a lot. She is homeschooled, her vision is blurry because of the meds...so it's hard to know exactly what to do with her. Her vision just went down to 20/40...but they do not know if it because of the drugs or if her eye is more damaged.
Some other things I recall is that a very stressful event happened in our family while I was pregnant with her. It was very heavy emotionally. Her father and brother both have an immune system disorder "chemical sensitivity". Her brother has autism, her sister has severe dyslexia, and her other brother and sister are being tested for dyslexia and aspergers. This daughter is the youngest of the five children. It is a pretty stressful house, and I feel sad that stress could contribute to the arthritis and eye disease. Our oldest son has been doing a treatment called chelation to get rid of heavy metals out of his body. It has helped him become much less autistic.
I was wondering if chelation would help our daughter with the eye disease and arthritis because of the whole immune system trying to rid itself of invaders and toxins angle. I did a toxic heavy elements hair test on our daughter and it showed some toxins like aluminum and bismuth. I don't know how chelators or supplements interact with atropine and pred forte though. Currently she is taking curcumin and quercetin, and kefired colostoral raw goat milk shakes daily.
