Doc Ock, Belt Restoration, Tutorial, Complete 12/22/04
Hey guys,

Well it's time I posted this for a member that can speak up if they want. This is the original master that created the Dr. Ock belt for Spiderman 2. This piece was really damaged and missing one side mount. I was contacted to make the duplicate side, restore the good side and plate and finish this to film condition.

Since this piece was used as the casting master, it was fractured, cracked and had silicone in all the cracks and dried clay in most of the recesses. It was in pretty poor condition for triple chrome plate.

First thing I did was cut a piece of Ren Shape to match the side that was still there. I added a tip piece to get the correct curve. This piece has several compound curves and it was really tough to match it up correctly.

Next I just did a quick shaping with an angle sander and cut the piece to the correct length.

To get the correct curves I build up bondo higher than the surface, and sand it to the correct shape. It's a lot of eyeballing and touch!

Next I re-glue the good side and fill the cracks with a first coat of bondo.

I do a putty coat on the freshly built side and make sure it's the correct shape and it matches up just right.

I want to cut out the belt mount on the left side. I measure the right side and match it up.

Next I cut the belt recess, glue it into place and bondo it all up.

One last putty coat on the right side and I finish up the sanding.

I filled a hole on the front where the belt had broken and fixed a bunch of pinholes on the top.

The Ock belt's new side is all finished and pinholed. It's sanded and ready for plating.

The original side is all pretty and smooth as glass. I can't re-primer this piece, it has to be plated and I don't want the plating to stick to the primer and not the part.

Here it is all ready for chrome!

Here is the plated Ock belt and the plating is flawless!

Next I paint the entire belt the way I paint my Endoskeletons. I spray the belt with Tamiya flat black paint and let it dry.

Next I use alcohol on a paper towel and wipe of the black paint leaving a weathered look in the crevices. You can wipe it clean or leave as much as desired.

Next I spray a coat of layered clear automotive paint to match the original belt. It the photos this comes out very rust colored, but in person it's very subtle just like the original. The guy that painted the original belt paints most of the mechanical parts for EdgeFX/XFX and uses the same pallet film after film. It was no surprise that this was the same color scheme after seeing the production photos.

The next step was to prep the chains. The timing belt chain was cast in resin, dremeled and custom fit for each segment.

Next I epoxy them in place watching the spacing.

The last step is to spray the last coat of clear rust color on the areas it's needed and wipe off the excess leaving gleaming chrome shining through.

Well that's it, this was a fun an unique piece that was a lot of fun to restore. This for all the compliments and I hope that Propazoid likes his new prop!
