Fragmented dreams...
Roosevelt ... Paige stared down at the title of her essay, the only thing she had as of yet written. It was unlike her to be unenthusiastic about her homework, not that this particular assignment was due until next week. Tonight she didn't seem to be able to muster any excitement over old presidents. Perhaps if she talked to Michael about it tomorrow her enthusiasm might return.
Her eyes lifted to look out into the blackness outside her window, with a sigh she dropped the pen onto the desk and pulled the flowered curtains shut. Perhaps she would finish this essay tomorrow after classes. Slipping a piece of paper into the book to mark her place she closed her history text book and pushed it aside.
Scratching an eyebrow she looked at her wrist watch, ten fifteen ... bed time. Getting to her feet she turned the key, locking her room. Somewhere outside in the corridor a girl could be hear talking to a friend in an excited tone.
Paige crossed back to her desk, taking a mental note of what classes she had tomorrow. Opening the desk draw she did a quick exchange of books for the ones that were in her bag. She slid in the completed homework she would need for tomorrow and then closed her rucksack once again.
She undressed hurriedly and slipped into her pajamas. Climbing into bed the young girl picked up the book that was lying by the side of her bed. Opening her copy of The Scarlet Pimpernel she lost herself with Sir Percy and the French revolution.
It was dark when she jolted awake and she was unsure what had awoken her. It took a few moments for her sleep befuddled mind to start working properly ... the alarm ... a drill. With a yawn she sat upright, her small hands reaching for the light, but even as she switched the bedside lamp on she heard a noise that made her pause. A scream echoed down the hallway, a feeling of unease seeped into her.
The young mutant hesitated, she knew she should evacuate from her room, but a second scream cut through the night followed by a confusion of noise out in the corridor. Even as she listened it ebbed away as the students living on her corridor left without her. She pulled the covers up closer around her, wondering what she should do, she knew she should have left with the other students, there was safety in numbers. It was obvious that something was wrong... perhaps if she stayed in her room one of the teachers would come for her. The minutes ticked by as she tried to decide what she should do. It occurred to her that by staying where she was she might be trapping herself like a mouse down a bolt hole. The idea motivated her into movement.
Clambering from the warmth of her bed she took her blue dressing gown from the back of her bed and slipped it on. Reaching for the handle of her door she unlocked it and peered out into the hallway. Someone had turned on the light and she could see the full length of the now deserted hallway.... where was everyone else. A cold chill of fear trembled down her spine at the thought that she was alone.
She was just about to step out into the hall when she saw something come around the corner at the end of the hall ... something not human. Hurriedly Paige slammed the door shut again, fear screaming through her. With shaking hands she turned the key in the lock and backed away from the door. Had it seen her?
What was that thing? There was a mounting noise of screams, running feet and shouts out in the hallway. Nothing in Paige's training that she could recall told her what to do in such a situation. One thing was for sure... she couldn't leave her room, she had no special powers to defend herself and by the noises outside the creature hadn't been friendly.
She felt panic gripping her, as she heard the sounds of doors out in the corridor being forced open, there was a high pitched scream followed by running footsteps ... obviously someone else had thought to shelter in her room. She had no idea how long it took for who ever was outside to move their way down the corridor, it was obvious that they were searching each room thoroughly. Her room was at the very far end of the corridor, there would be no escape that way and the drop from her window was sheer. The sounds were getting closer and closer to her room ... and then they were there. Something was turning the handle of her door, then there was a shuddering blow to it as whatever was outside tried to break their way in.
Letting out a gasp of fear she looked around wildly for a place to hide, the wardrobe was the only place. Two steps took her to it and she wretched the door open. Climbing inside she crouched on top of her shoes, heart pounding wildly. There was another crash and the lock on her door splintered.
The sound of footsteps came to her straining ears, they stopped outside the wardrobe. She let out a muffled sob, unable to stay quiet. Slowly the door to the cupboard opened, blinking back tears she gave a squeaky scream of fear as a hand reached in towards her

He wasn’t going to make it out, that much was becoming more and more obvious with each passing moment. Swiftly Michael fought back the wave of panic that had threatened to overwhelm him, rigorously keeping any sign of his own fear off of Hood’s face. This wasn’t the time or the place for him to lose it. Not with so many terrified teenagers looking to him and the others for some sort of guidance. With that thought firmly in mind the astral mutant flashed a reassuring smile at this latest bunch of stragglers he had managed to round up and told them quietly.. “There’s an exit not to far away now..just let me check the coast is clear and then we’ll head for it Ok? “
Dishevelled head’s nodded in agreement , the students huddling closer together as he faded into Hoods invisible form and went to scout out their route. It wasn’t looking good. More and more of these intruders seemed to be pouring into the Institute and from what Michael could see it seemed like they were planning to stay! This wasn’t just an attack.. it was an invasion. And that was what sent Michael’s carefully constructed house of cards tumbling down around his feet.
Oh he had always known that he would have had to wait behind in the supposed safety of the walls till the enemies left. That had been a given when he and Mr Summers had worked out this particular little survival strategy. What neither of them had imagined was that the Institute would be occupied! And that his bolthole would turn into a trap.
‘Ok ok.. so I’m screwed’ he told himself firmly as he advanced swiftly but cautiously down the corridor ‘but those people back there aren’t. They can get out . If I do this right that is! ‘ Already he and the other members of his team had helped a great many of their fellow pupils get to safety but things were getting more difficult all the time as the intruders became more systematic in their searching and their numbers continued to increase. Fortunately though the number of students left inside was also diminishing as they either fled or were taken.
Michael didn’t even want to think about the possibility of ending up in the hands of these invaders. And he sure as hell wasn’t going to let his little band of refugees suffer that fate either. For now at least luck seemed still to be on their side. The way to the hidden exit was clear, although Hood doubted that it was going to stay that way for long. All the more reason to hurry.
When he was back into sight of the waiting group Michael poured more of his life force into his astral form rendering it solid and then waved them forward, before drawing his bow and notching an arrow in order to cover them as they made their escape. Sure enough they had hardly started filing into the passage when, someone came round the corner, a human by the looks of things his hand already raising the gun he held when the arrow struck him squarely in the chest.
He went down like a stone, the sudden violence provoking a surge of screaming from the already terrified students. Damn it all that was bound to attract attention! Go go go. Hood told them, physically pushing them into the tunnel.. “head straight down and try to find one of the staff members at the other end. I’ll draw them away!”
Already he could hear others approaching as he closed the door rendering the exit nearly invisible again. Ok they’re looking for someone…….         And I guess that someone will have to be me! Hood moved into the centre of the passageway not far from the unconscious soldier, thanking god once again that his arrows didn’t have to be fatal.. just effective. Because if he had to kill……….he just wasn’t sure he could do that. And he really didn’t want to have to find out.
For now though all he had to do get himself noticed and then run like hell! How ironic was that! His life depending on just how fast he could sprint down a corridor! ‘Note to self, I hate playing bait’ he thought as the enemies caught sight of him and turned both their attention and their weapons his way. Then he was off, running as fast as he knew how, leading them away from the exit and down the corridors of the Institute their shouted orders echoing in his ears.
He didn’t need to go too far, just far enough to distract them, but even that was a tall order. Just a little more… There. One moment when he was out of their vision was enough. Enough to let him disappear that was. Michael’s astral form floated upwards, through the ceiling, away from his pursuers leaving them behind baffled and angry. He didn’t even need to catch his breath. After all Hood had none to lose. His nerves however were all his own and they demanded a moments settling before Michael was ready to go on. As it seemed he had too…….
Someone screamed nearby! With a curse Hood made his way towards the source of the commotion almost colliding with a hysterical girl who was heading in the other direction. “Wait” he said grabbing hold of her. “Let me help you.”But she was beyond waiting her eyes filled with a pure and unreasoning terror that not even his words could get through. With a moan she pulled himself out of his grip and continued to flee . And when he glanced back at the way she had come he knew why
!
It wasn’t the soldier who was chasing her that nearly stopped Hood in his tracks. It was what lay beyond. Only instinct kept him moving in to intercept the intruders attack blocking a vicious blow with the flat of his sword before turning it and bringing the pommel down on the mans head. It wasn’t enough to knock him out of course, this was a trained fighter with years of experience under his belt whereas Michael was a debutant. But it was enough to make him pause.
“Never mind all this seize the day crap’ Wolverine had told them in survival class. ‘You have to seize the second! Because that’s all you get in a fight! And if you miss it you could just end up dead!” Michael didn’t miss it. He couldn’t afford to. Because this man was the least of his worries! The horror he had seen in the corridor seconds before was heading towards a room Michael recognised…A room he only prayed was empty. Because if it wasn’t ..
Maybe it was that thought that helped him find the opening he needed in his assailants defences. Whatever the reason his knee certainly connected where Wolverine had assured them it would do the most harml At another time the young Scot might even have winced in sympathy as attacker screamed and rolled on the ground. For now though he didn’t even give him a second glance. All he saw was the demon… because that’s what it had to be….. going into Paige’s room. And the only scream he heard was hers.
He covered the distance in an instant, running as he had before, though this time not for his life but for hers. “Hey” he yelled as he entered, his voice causing the creature to turn. “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size for a change!”
Re: Fragmented dreams...
Long, dark brittle nails tipped the fingers which stretched out towards the young mutant. She stared up at the demon with terror etched into her face. Her frightened eyes blinked as they stared into the dimly red eyes of the figure outside the wardrobe. As the outstretched fingers touched her she flinched back away from the grasp. She turned her face away, closing her eyes as she huddled away from the demon.
Paige knew little of such things as demons, she was aware that they existed. It was the first time she had encountered something such as this, but she could guess what it was. What was it that demons did to people? Why was this creature in the school and what would make him threaten her?
“Hey. Why don’t you pick on someone your own size for a change!” The voice was familiar, she couldn't place it, but she knew it to be friendly and her heart jumped in her chest. The figure withdrew from the door of the wardrobe, twisting around to face the young man who was framed at the entrance to the room.
Micheal!! Her heart leapt in her breast at the sight of him. He'd come to find her. She felt a rush of affection at the thought of him, but a second later she saw she'd been mistaken. There were no crutches supporting the boy's body and the face was slightly different. Not Micheal ... but Hood! A confusion of a different sort filled her. Despite the situation she didn't want Hood to see her crouching in her wardrobe in her dressing gown with her hair in disarray .

Re: Fragmented dreams...“Hey. Why don’t you pick on someone your own size for a change!”Was that really the best he could come up with , Michael asked himself in despair. He who usually had a thousand and one quotes buzzing around in his brain like so much white noise! Well maybe that was the case, when he didn’t actually have to fight someone that was. Or rather something!
Someone, he had already done and dusted. Bullies of all shapes and sizes! And he had always found the words he had accumulated over the years, more than ready to rise to the challenge! With ‘someone’ ,even someone like Alex or Max’s dad there was always the remote possibility that words might actually turn the tide. Here and now though Michael didn’t think that a cute quote from Byron was going to cut it. And he didn’t have time to find out if he was wrong.
If there were quotes flashing through his mind, they had much more to do with physical survival rather than witty repartee These were voices spoke of life and death. Each in a different manner it was true but finally they came together in agreement. Wolverine! ‘Look scared and you’re dead! Cyclops! ‘ ‘Fear is the enemy, learn to keep it at bay ‘Given their powers it was difficult to imagine either of the teachers being afraid of anything. But still! There had been something in their tone that said they spoke from experience. Been there, done that, worn the tee-shirt was something Michael could relate to. And right now he needed to relate to something Because, this creature he was facing was, literally his worst nightmare!
Ok the thing that turned towards him wasn’t red and.. Michael didn’t want to say the words or even think them but they came all the same. Gloating! Cruel! Lusting! Ah god that one was too much! Dreams, surely only dreams! But still they came back to him now. Dreams of lying helplessly before those demons who had wanted to buy him, while they touched him, bringing him unimaginable pain, asking him to trade Paige’s life for some transitory peace that would in the end have been useless! Because how could he have lived with himself if he had accepted it!
Now Paige needed him again and that thought was all that kept Michael from turning and running, though every instinct he possessed urged him to do so. It was what made him challenge the demon even if the words he used to do so were corny and melodramatic. At least by some miracle they hadn’t come out sounding as scared as he felt!
Time seemed to slow. Michael could feel the demons smouldering eyes on him assessing the threat he posed if indeed he posed any at all. He in turn took in the creature’s fangs and the spikes which covered its inhuman head as well as the black armour it seemed to be wearing.
*Give me a break* Michael thought desperately. *Its already a demon. Armour is just serious overkill and what the hell is it holding?* Not a weapon it seemed, though, given the demons claws that was scant consolation. Collars? Hood’s eyes widened in shock as the implications of what that meant hit him hard! No way! No way either he or Paige was going to end up on the end of a leash! Especially not if this thing was holding the other end of it! Though it appeared that the demon didn’t agree with his line of thinking.
It was coming towards him , not fast enough to take him by surprise but certainly covering the distance between them rapidly enough to make dodging a necessity. Hood rolled as a scaled hand reached for him bringing himself into the room between his assailant and Paige, wondering all the time if this was the best move or if he should have tried to lure it out after him into the corridor and away from the captive girl. But then again if it hadn’t followed him, Paige could have been collared or worse before he had time to get back.
Here at least he could see if the demon suddenly decided to change target, though the small room was hardly the best terrain for his type of fighting. Close quarters reduced any advantage agility and speed might have given him and the demon knew it. Indeed it didn’t seem to see him as any kind of a threat at all. He was just a mouse to be caught and caged and it was clear to both of them that, in the end, he would be no matter how much he tried to keep out of reach.
‘Ok’ Hood told himself as a clawed hand narrowly missed catching hold of his arm. ’Time to show him that maybe I do have some teeth of my own! ‘ The sword was out in an instant and this time it was its edge that Hood used as he spun and aimed at the creatures face, watching with satisfaction as it drew back not quite quickly enough to stop the blade from opening a gash in its already deformed features. The blood that flowed from the cut was green and the look in the demons eyes changed as it raised a hand to wipe it away.
It was another tactic that Wolverine had recommended though, given the present circumstances, it was a risky one to say the least. Make your enemy angry! Well Hood seemed to have achieved that. Now all he had to do was live through the fallout. The demon was coming again the collars he held now swinging back and forth as he advanced . This time though the astral mutant didn’t try to evade him . Sword ready he held his ground, waiting for the inevitable attack. Which wasn’t long in coming!
Suddenly the demon brought the swinging collars down hard upon Hood’s sword hand knocking the weapon from his grip and sending him stumbling into the creatures grasp. Immediately one vice like arm wrapped itself round his throat dragging his head back while the other caught him round the chest trapping his left arm and holding him helpless. “Sooooo who is going to get cut now “ the sibilant voice asked as Hood felt the cat like claws extend.
Desperately the young mutant felt behind him, the fingers of his still free right hand finding the juncture of the body armour the demon wore even as the creature dragged what felt like knives across his body splitting the skin forcing a gasp of pain from his lips much to the fiends amusement. It was too much like his dream, too much like the moment when Connors claws had almost killed him for the terror now to come flooding back but all the same Michael managed to keep it under control. After all…. this was where he had wanted to be, wasn’t it?
As plans went it probably was one of the worst ever. But it was better than no plan at all. And since the demons intention seemed to be capture rather than kill, Paige would be in no more danger than she had been before even if it went dreadfully wrong. He on the other hand.. ...The claws raked across his chest again, leaving silver trails of astral energy behind them where there should have been blood. Michael could feel his real body protest just as strongly as he felt the pain which this time made him cry out but he refused to let Hood fade back into safety.
Instead he did exactly what he had hoped he would get a chance to do ever since the moment he had let himself be disarmed. He reformed the sword that the demon forgotten all about in his right hand and, with a strength born of desperation, drove it deep into the weak spot he had detected in the creatures armour thrusting it back and up towards what he hoped was its heart.
The question he had asked himself just moments earlier was answered it seemed. At least as far as demons were concerned. When his back was to the wall he was ready to do whatever he had to too survive. Even if that meant killing . And if that wasn’t something he particularly liked to admit about himself then it was going to have to be something he would learn to live with.
All that mattered here and now thought was that there was green blood running over his hand and that the grip around his throat was lessening. Nor did the claws that had been slicing his flesh, gut him, as the demon faltered and fell. Hood staggered free, still gripping the sword that was buried deep in the creatures body, pulling it out only when his enemy was down. He didn’t know if it was dead or not. He didn’t really want to know. What he was sure of however was for the moment at least Paige was safe. And that was what counted.
Turning back towards her he let the sword fade back into nothingness as he knelt beside the wardrobe wincing as he did so, the wounds on his body still shining silver . “Paige. Are you all right “ he asked worriedly. “ Did that thing hurt you? “
Re: Fragmented dreams...
She'd never encountered demons before, not like Michael ever had. Paige was quickly learning that being told something and seeing it for yourself were two completely different things. Her frightened eyes peered at the figure which loomed before her. What would happen to the both of them. She knew she wasn't a brave person, she'd never been one for standing up to people who threatened her, her dealings with Alex were testament to that. Situations like this were all very well and good in books but real life was something all together different.
A sharp release of breath accompanied the demon turning away as she felt herself released from the baleful glare of the red eyes. Trying not to make a sound to alert the attention of the nightmarish creature she glanced passed him towards Hood. The demon started moving towards the young man. Paige couldn't help but feel grateful for Hood distracting the creature, even though she knew that the astral mutant had just put himself in danger for her.
Suddenly there was the ringing sound of metal against metal, Paige let out a squeak of terror. She'd not even been aware that the demon held a weapon. Paige was impressed with how quickly Micheal... no Hood responded to being attacked, she knew that if she was standing where her friend was that she would be dead by now. It took a moment for her to realise that the demon was carrying a set of what looked like circles of metal and that was what he'd attacked Hood with.
She closed her eyes, unable to being herself to watch as the pair struggled back and forwards across her room. What would happen to her if Michael lost? Would the demon thing kill her? She felt an overwhelming urge to run from the room but the two men were between her and her only route of escape.
But suddenly the creature was sagging, slipping to the floor. It took a long moment for her to realise that it wasn't going to spring to it's feet and attack the pair of them again. The enormity of what had just happened hit her, bringing tears to her eyes. All she could do to respond to Hood's gentle inquiry was to nod, she didn't trust herself to speak. She felt as though she would either burst into tears or vomit.
Paige used the sides of the wardrobe to help her get to her feet, ignoring the clothes that hampered her progress. Her eyes flicked to the still figure lying on the floor of her room fearful that he would get to his feet again as they did in all the horror movies. Feeling as shaky as a new born lamb she stumbled from the confines of the wardrobe. A single tear slid down her pale cheeks as her eyes moved to look down at Hood.
‘Your hurt!.’ Her voice seemed to steady even as she spoke, falling back into the role of nurse and patient as a way to deal with that situation that she’d now been placed into. The young woman’s knees bent under her as she knelt down before Hood her hands reaching out for the deep cuts on his chest. He felt cool and firm under her sensitive finger tips, though she hardly noticed any difference from normal. A sudden red flush tinged her cheeks as she realised where her hands were and upon who. There was a sudden unbidden image another bedroom and another male chest, she blushed harder at the thought, hoping that Hood hadn’t noticed.

Re: Fragmented dreams...
She was safe. Scared certainly. Close to tears. But safe. Michael felt relief flood through him bringing with it a momentary rush of tiredness as the shock of what had just happened suddenly hit him. They had come so close to being taken! And astral or not, his body was starting to react to that fact.
Michael closed his eyes for a moment, willing the trembling that he could feel starting up in his legs to stop, knowing that there was no time for weakness here. Not when they still had to get past whatever might be standing between them and the way out.
Still, by the time he opened his eyes again Paige was already on her feet, looking as shaken as he felt , her over bright eyes fillng with concern as she looked down at him still kneeling at her feet. “You're hurt!.’ she said moving towards him and kneeling in turn, her gentle hands exploring the wound that the demon had inflicted upon him during their desperate struggle. Hood winced in pain as her fingers brushed against his skin.
How easily they seemed to fall into these roles, nurse and patient. But this wasn’t med lab, and, though back in his hiding place Michael was bleeding it wasn’t real blood that was shining silver against Paige’s hands.
Still , as always her touch was comforting. As always? That wasn’t quite right now was it. Because, Michael realised, this was the first time she and Hood had touched. Touched like this anyway, her hands upon his chest, skin to … whatever it was that passed for skin where Hood was concerned. Though it felt real enough to him. .
She was warm. Alive! Human! She was Paige. Terrified and yet ready to be there for him as he had been there for her. Michael looked through Hood’s eyes and saw her blush. His cheeks reddened in turn remembering how she had greeted his astral being in the med lab, when he had paraded it thoughtlessly in front of her. She was modest and innocent and Hood’s costume was well, as tightly fitted as any of the X men uniforms. And it showed a lot more skin. Of course it embarrased her. And that in turn embarassed him.
“Its nothing” he said hurriedly, not wanting to lose the contact between them but knowing that he must “ just a few scratches. Besides” the grey eyes that met hers were entirely Michael’s “There’s not much we can do about it here and now , is there? Best be going before more like him turn up.”
Re: Fragmented dreams...
Her hands hesitated as she felt him flinch, her eyes peered at him through her messy fringe. Blushing very slightly she let her gaze fall away from his, looking instead at the silver coloured blood which now covered her fingers. Letting her hands fall away from him she scrubbed them on her pastel blue dressing gown. The movement made her remember that she was kneeling here only half dressed. Unconsciously her hands reached for the tie of her dressing gown, pulling it tighter around her. “Its nothing” His manner was brusque, and in response she got quickly to her feet. She wouldn’t force her healing abilities on anyone who didn’t want them. She wished he’d let her try to stem the bleeding, and not only because touching the firmness of his chest was pleasurable perhaps the cut wasn’t as bad as it appeared. “There’s not much we can do about it here and now , is there? Best be going before more like him turn up.” His words were confusing? Did he not know about her healing powers? She couldn’t remember if she’d ever told him … had she ever told Michael?
‘I could try healing you’ Her words were quiet, her eyes flicking towards the door … more like him? She’d assumed that he was it! The whole reason that the alarm was sounding. She felt fear flush through her at the thought that there were others like that roaming around the school. Paige wasn’t convinced that she wanted to leave her room, wouldn‘t they be safer hiding here until the older X-men cleared the school of any more of those demons.
ooc: Sorry it is short, I couldn't think of what to put.
Re: Fragmented dreams... ‘I could try healing you’ Strangely enough, despite the fact that Michael did know vaguely of Paige’s power, the words still caught him by surprise.
Healing , or healing like that anyway wasn’t something that had ever come up between the two of them. And with good reason!
Hank had mentioned her gift in passing, stating it as a fact rather than as a potential cure for any of Michael’s own health problems. And Paige herself had never brought the subject up. It would have been too awkward probably given, how closely she was involved in the young Scot’s rehabilitation.
She knew better than anyone else just how hard things were for him. She tried harder than anyone else to get him through the pain that was physiotherapy. Michael didn’t doubt for an instant that if she could have done anything else to help him she would have done so. Which meant that she, like so many others it seemed, had got to him too late. That she had missed that magical window of opportunity in which she could have mended his broken body and made him whole.
It must have been frustrating for her. It certainly was for him. Rationally he had accepted it. But still there were times, especially during their sessions together, times when all his willpower still couldn’t overcome his physical shortcomings, times when she , as his nurse was the closest one to take out his anger on, when he wanted to yell “You are a healer. Why can’t you heal me?”
Not that he ever would. Their friendship meant too much to him and a comment like that, even spoken in such circumstances, would almost certainly have ended it. And so he had forced himself, not so much to forget her ability, but certainly to right it off as a possibility where he was concerned. Now though it suddenly seemed that this was no longer the case.
It was logical of course. These wounds were fresh, newly made, unlike the old injuries he had come to the Institute with. This was Hood though, bleeding in front of her. Could he be treated by her powers? Michael had no idea. Certainly the wounds that Hood received were transferred back to his actual body. Would any healing he received also reflect back. And did they have the time to find out?
Certainly Michael had been lying when he said his injuries were nothing. They weren’t life threatening that was for sure but they were painful and the more blood he lost the less likely it was that Hood would stay present as a functioning entity. In the end though it all came down to how long it would take. Yes it would be great to be healed but not if it meant that gave these monsters the time to get between them and the exit. In the end though it was Paige who had to be the judge of that.
Oh . I hadn’t though about that he told Paige honestly. It would have to be fast though. And I’m not sure it would work on Hood anyway.” Hood stood up and looked the frightened girl straight in her worried green eyes. The fact is Paige that the school is crawling with invaders. And they look as if they’re here to stay. So hiding here isn’t an option. We have to get out fast or we wont be able to get out at all.
So if you can wave a magic wand and cure this that would be wonderful. He said with a rueful smile But if it takes longer than that then I’ll just have to live with it. Till we get to safety that is.”
Re: Fragmented dreams...
She was a little confused to see a look of surprise move across his face. Every student had special powers, why was it a shock to him to learn that hers was the ability to heal? What had Hood thought her power was? She felt her cheeks flush red again in a confused response to him.
In a nervous fluster she grabbed hold of the tie on her robe, undoing and refastening it a little tighter. Oh . I hadn’t though about that The words made her relax a little, glad to put a reason to his reaction. It would have to be fast though. And I’m not sure it would work on Hood anyway.” Her healing wasn’t something that could be rushed. It wasn’t a long process but neither was it a very quick one. There would be blood vessels to mend, muscle to knit and skin to heal. Even then something in her questioned the sense of her offering her assistance. The healing would sap her energy and something about his manner said that she may not have the opportunity to go back to bed and rest for a while.
The fact is Paige that the school is crawling with invaders. And they look as if they’re here to stay. So hiding here isn’t an option. We have to get out fast or we wont be able to get out at all.
Her frightened mind conjured up images of black shapes walking the corridors of the school, looking for their victims. It hadn’t occurred to her that there might be more than one of the creatures abroad that night. Now she thought about it she realised that the distant screams of students had continued even after the demon had broken into her room. Her face paled at the thought of what might be out there in the maze of corridors which made up the Institute.
Surely they would be safer hiding here than venturing out into the darkened school. At least if they stayed here they would be in the right place for when Hank came looking for them. She was sure that the doctor would remember about her and come to rescue her. Hank might sometimes come across as intimidating, but there was no one she would rather have defending her.
So if you can wave a magic wand and cure this that would be wonderful. For a moment she thought he was making fun of her power, but the look in his eyes said different. She suddenly understood that he was attempting humour cover his own pain and fear. The idea that may be afraid was a discomforting one. But if it takes longer than that then I’ll just have to live with it. Till we get to safety that is. Paige nodded in agreement. Once they’d escaped the school she would have the time and concentration to focus on his in injuries.
It will take a few minutes she admitted. A worried expression ghosted across her face as she glanced over at the slightly open door. Do we have to leave the room? I’d rather notHiding here seemed the much safer option, especially if Hood stayed with her. She felt her cheeks warm slightly at the thought of hiding in the dark all alone with Hood. A second later she scolded herself, this was neither the place nor the time for her hormones to go on the rampage!

Re: Fragmented dreams...
Michael watched the emotions flickering across her face, emotions his words had caused. Fear to start with! Only deepening as Paige took in the situation.
It was easy to see why her parents had insisted in taking her off a team! There was fragility about Paige that made you want to protect her. Couple that with her precarious health and it made sense to keep her locked up safely like some princess in a tower.
But ohh… if you did that.. even for the best of reasons then you might just miss this flicker of flame within her. The one that had offered him healing, despite her anxiety! The one that was lucid enough to know that such comfort would take too long under their present circumstances. Even if part of her shied away from admitting the dire straights they now found themselves in.
. Do we have to leave the room? she asked him earnestly I’d rather not Michael couldn’t help but sigh. He too would have preferred to stay safe and warm in the room with her, waiting for someone more competent , and lets face it there were many who could lay claim to that title , to come along and rescue them. The problem was that he had seen what was going on outside and, unlike her, wasn’t sure that any reassuring help was at hand.
Indeed from what he had witnessed that didn’t seem likely! Not that he doubted the elder X men’s dedication to the cause. It was just that the attack was too sudden and too far spread. That was the negative side of his reasoning talking of course. . The one that told him things were desperate and that he was on his own. The positive side however…. the one he clung to, as a drowning man might cling to a reed, told him that he had been trained to look after himself. Just as Paige had! And that consequently they had no need of aide. No matter how much his frightened mind insisted that they did!
Think! There was a guard in the corridor that he had only incapacitated for a moment! Still… when last they had met Michael had been running into the more than welcome embrace of a demon. A knee in the groin was a lucky move that anyone could pull off if they got lucky. Taking down an inhabitant of some minor hell wasn’t exactly the same thing though .Michael was almost sure that the soldier in the corridor had given him exactly 0 per cent chance of coming out on top of this little encounter. Still that didn’t mean that he wouldn’t hang around to make sure he was right!
Even now he could be coming along the corridor to make sure things had gone the way he wanted them to. And to be honest Michael wasn’t sure he was in any state to take him on. Crap! he would just have to be. Because there might be all manner of things still waiting between them and the exit. And he couldn’t let any of them stand in their way.
“I’d like to stay here as well” he told Paige with a worried smile.” And if I thought we could then Id be all for it. But the truth is that people out there are hunting us. That’s what the collar and chain were for. Its not some bedroom door that’s going to stop them, Paige. And I won’t let you be caught.
Injured or not he was on his feet, forcing some sense of conviction into his voice. “We can make it “ he told her. “Its not that far to the exit! And..” he nodded towards the remains of the demon he had perhaps killed “ they wont be expecting us to make it out of here so..” He extended one strong tanned hand in her direction “I say we go for it. Together!” * I’ll keep you safe* Those words died in his throat. They were words you gave to a victim you were helping out of a crisis. Not to a team mate. And whether or not her parents thought she was capable of being on a team Michael knew that he and Paige had become just that. And despite her worried face and nervous hands he could onlmy feel stronger for having her by his side.

That’s what the collar and chain were for. Its not some bedroom door that’s going to stop them, Paige. And I won’t let you be caught." Her eyes darted down to stare with a horrified look at the collar and chain lying next to the prostrate figure on the floor. Why would they have a collar… it took her brain a moment to register that it had been for her. But why would anyone want to do that to a student? It made no sense to her. Paige found herself shuddering as a sudden image of the slim band of metal secured around her own neck, the chain keeping her close to the terrifying daemon.
“We can make it Its not that far to the exit! And.. they wont be expecting us to make it out of here so.. I say we go for it. Together!”Paige blinked slightly, she hadn’t seen Hood get to his feet, but suddenly he was looming over her. If they weren’t expected to make it out of the room however were the both of them going to make it to the exit?
‘OK’ Her voice sounded oddly high pitched and strained to her ears.
Grey eyes darted around her room, was there anything she should take with her? Her gaze fell and lingered a second upon her almost brand new laptop, the bookcase full of treasured school texts and cherished novels. Hesitating for only a moment she stooped, pulling a pair of sneakers from the wardrobe, Paige hurriedly pulled them onto her feet, hands fumbling slightly as she tied the laces. Darting to her bedside table she snatched up her bag, inside it amongst other items were her purse and mobile, she decided she wouldn’t probably need them.
Taking a deep breath she turned to face Hood once more, fear shining brightly from her eyes. ‘OK I’m ready.’ Of course she wasn’t at all, she didn’t even want to leave the room! It seemed a much better idea to hide until all this had blown over but at the same time she didn’t doubt Hood’s judgement. Just one look at his eyes reassured her, whatever the cost he would defend her from anything that threatened them. The confidence he exuded helped to slow her thudding heart and clear her thoughts. Despite the situation she felt a small thrill run down her spine.
Her small hand slipped into his larger one, the coolness of his touch surprised her. At any other time she would have been nervous to take the hand of a guy, but now she was happy for the reassurance his touch gave her. A moment later they had left her room behind, hastening as quietly and quickly as possibly down the corridor. Paige stayed close behind her friend, eyes darting quickly around the darkened school. There were still muffled shouts coming from somewhere within the bowls of the Institute.

Ok. There was fear in Paige’s voice but that was all right because there was purpose in her movements. Michael forced himself to stand quietly while she gathered up the things she needed to take with her, her choices practical and restrained although he knew how much it must cost her to leave behind her beloved books and the gifts her family had sent her to make this room feel like home.
He almost knelt to tie the laces for her when he saw how badly her hands trembled but stopped himself in time. They were preparing for battle after all. She didn’t need to be babied! And, truth be told, he didn’t know if his own hands would be any steadier. Which was something Paige definitely didn’t need to know at this precise moment in her life.
Then suddenly she was ready, green eyes rising to meet grey ones with a look of scared determination. Her hand, when she took his, was warm and fragile, like a small bird nestling in his grasp, and yet he could feel its strength too, the strength of Paige’s heart and spirit flowing into him through this physical contact. Telling him he wasn’t alone. Giving him something to fight for! He should have let go. He should have dematerialised and gone on ahead to see what was waiting for them. But he didn’t.
Training was all very well and good but this was his first real taste of combat and if so far he had managed to handle everything that had been flung at him, still it had taken its toll. The silver slashes that crossed his chest were visible signs of that. The body of the demon lying on Paige’s bedroom floor was another.
Michael was still functioning like an X man, putting into practice what he had been taught in the danger room but that didn’t mean that a part of him didn’t want to just bury his head in Paige’s shoulder and have her hold him while he wept. There was no time for that though, not with the sounds of continued fighting still reaching their ears. Still he could hold her hand a little while longer at least, knowing deep down that the comfort it gave him was as healing to his spirit as any power she had might have would have been to his body.
It couldn’t last though, no matter how much he wanted it too. At the end of the corridor they would have to make a choice, decide which exit they should make for, which direction offered them the best chance of escaping without conflict and that choice could best be made if he knew what was waiting for them.
So with a sigh Michael gently let go of Paige’s hand and turned to face her, whispering softly. “This is a safe place for you to wait. I’m just going to go and scout ahead for a bit, check out what’s up ahead. I won’t be long I promise”
Re: Fragmented dreams...
The coolness of his hand helped ground her, though she could feel the clammy sweatiness of her own hand. She wasn't afforded the luxuries that Hood had, her body betrayed her fear in more physical ways than the expression in her eyes. She rearranged her hand in his, taking a firmer grip upon him, as if somehow clinging to him could drive away whatever stood between them and freedom.
He was so calm and collected that she found her own response to the situation rather embarrassing. Hood was able to stride down the corridor exuding confidence whilst she wobbled along behind him, just trying to keep her knees from buckling under her. This, some rational part of her brain decided was why he was on a team and she was not. Because at the first hint of danger her reaction was to either run away screaming or to cower in a corner like a hunted bird.
All of a sudden they were at the end of the corridor and Hood had suddenly let go of her hand, too quickly in fact for her to cling to him. She felt suddenly vulnerable without the contact and slightly unsure of what to do with her hands. Paige shifted on the spot her ears straining for the sound of approaching footsteps.
“This is a safe place for you to wait. I’m just going to go and scout ahead for a bit, check out what’s up ahead. I won’t be long I promise” Well no actually! Her room looked much much safer, she wondered if she would have the courage to wait for him or if he'd find that she'd run back to the shelter of her room before he returned.
'But you will come back.' The words sounded stupid even to her own ears... Of course he was going to come back! Hood had taken the time to come and find her, as a rescue, team member that was his role he wasn't about to abandon her now. Even though her mind worked rationally a single tear leaked from her eyes and rolled slowly down her pale cheek.

Re: Fragmented dreams...
It had cost him dearly to let go of her, relinquishing that all too human contact that he craved more than he was sure Paige needed to know at that precise moment in time, with the touch of a demons claws still echoing in whatever passed for Hood’s flesh. And so her words didn’t sting as they might have under different circumstances.
It wasn’t so much doubt about their friendship that Michael heard in her voice as much as a need for a basic assurance that they would both get out of this situation alive. Which was unfortunate! Because that was, in the end, the one thing he couldn’t promise her.
That he would do anything in his power to protect her, that much he thought he had already proved. That anyone who wished her harm would have to walk over his dead body, both spiritually and literally speaking , was also something he took to be a given, even if he half hoped that Paige hadn’t realised it might come to that. Still they were both young and in any kind world not meant to be put in this sort of life and death situation. And so the question was hers to ask, just as it was his to answer. 'But you will come back.?’
If there had ever been a moment to summon up a smile it was now and Michael forced Hood to rise to the occasion. “Of course I will. I would never leave you behind, Paige.” he told her truthfully. That’s not something you ever have to worry about. But I do have to go ahead and make sure the path is clear!”
There were no lies in what he had said. Just emissions! He would effectively protect his girl with his life. He just didn’t have to tell her that he wasn’t sure that would be enough. He had made it this far simply because he was going against the tide. Fighting his way into a building everyone else was trying to leave. Paige though had to get out. And that changed things considerably.
If he could just get her to one of the exits…..! Yeah sure! Michael knew that wouldn’t be enough. Alone and without any active power she would be picked off all too easily. At least the other mutants he had got out could depend on each other. Now though it was too late. Anyone capable of getting out had already done so. And the invaders were taking control of the institute. Still he had to try. Because the thought of Paige in the hands of people capable of wrecking this destruction on the school didn’t bear thinking of!
So he smiled with feigned confidence and left her there, floating unseen up the nearby corridor until he finally came to an intersection and with it a dilemma. Normally he was proud of his Scottish heritage but now for once he wished he had taken in a little more of American culture. There was something about the costume the man he suddenly faced wore that sent shivers of recognition down his non existent spine. “Come on” he told himself. “You know this! Red leather devil suit! He’s either a hero or a loony! And lets face it we need a hero!”
Even so the guy was in bad shape. Hood’s astral form could see the steam still rising from his arm even if the terrible smell of burning flesh was something he couldn’t yet sense. And as for the girl he girl he held onto… She scared Michael to his very core. There were flames licking the insides of the eyes that looked his way, as yet unaware of his astral presence, or for that matter of Paige waiting trustingly in the corridor.
This was a force at least as dangerous as that of the invaders they supposedly faced together. One that could perhaps get Paige out alive where he couldn’t! Or which would kill him where he stood. If he materialised fully that was. Thankfully though his power gave him an other option!
Michael concentrated enough to make Hood visible to the two people before him and put a now visible finger to his lips in the age old gesture for silence. Because even wounded this man looked like someone you wanted on your side. And the girl definitely didn’t seem like someone you would survive as an enemy
