Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
Poltergeist is from a German word meaning noisy spirits. Reports of poltergeists date back to Ancient Roman times.
The activity that takes place will start of with knocks and bangs, furniture starting to move around by itself. Then, the activity will become more intense, manifesting itself through voices and even the appearance of full apparitions. Furniture may slide across the room and beds may shake. Many shows are based on this is a style of haunting because it tends to be the most terrifying and rarest type of haunting that occurs.
Most of the time, in the case of a poltergeist, the haunting circles around a female in her teen years. Some of these cases seem to be caused by the female unknowingly controlling the energy around herself. Some cases happen around people that are stable and in the right mind space.
This haunting is hard to classify due to certain situations. No two are ever really the same. Most of the time you will find that one person in the household seems to be more affected by the haunting than anyone else. It may seem that most of the activity doesn't happen unless that certain person is present. Usually, the activity appears to stop when that person leaves the home. The majority of the time poltergeists are experienced by several people, but again they seem to center around one certain person. This person may be highly stressed as of late or maybe this person has gone through some type of extreme emotional situation. If this is the case, see that the individual involved gets some medical care, and soon afterwards the poltergeist will subside.
When it is not the teenager that is manifesting activity there are usually several spirits in the area. The spirits appear to pool their energy together in order to become strong enough to move larger objects and make more noises. In order to remedy the situation, you need to find the root of their anger so that they can pass over and leave you in peace. On most poltergeist cases they will disappear with out any warning, just as they appeared. Certain times it may stop within a few days, other times it may take years. You may never know the reason that it happened. Most people are just happy to see it go and that's enough for them.
By understanding why it was there in the first place helps you to understand how to keep it from ever coming back again. Knowledge is the key in protecting yourself in this world.

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
I've only got one problem with the routine definition of poltergiest and that is that they usually "lump" together the spirit activity caused by what is believed to be a true haunting, with the activity that is created by a living person.
To my way of thinking when activity is produced by a adolescent teen or by someone that suffers from mental illness this is an extreme form of pk. It's not a haunting at all but more like a person throwing a mental temper tantrum that is manifested in this type of activity.
Anyway that's my 2cents worth. Has anyone else got any thoughts on this topic?

I'm glad to know I'm not the only person that's given it some thought. I hadn't ran across anything that had the two causes for the occurences seperated before, it's always been lumped together and to me that just really needs to be addressed more.

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
That's always been a bit of a confusing area for me. I have read and was under the impression that it was always related to an adolescent, who most likely was causing the occurance mentally. However there is conflicting theories to that frequently which does cause confusion there. Regardless though would it still not be classifed as "paranormal" It's an unexplained occurance.

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
They are both paranormal, that's true. But in different fields. While one is caused by a true Poltergiest Spirit and the other is caused by extreme pk from the living.
Where one is spirit activity, the other is mental ability.
Now if someone wants to seperate psychokenetics from the paranormal then that form of activity would have to be seperated from being classified as poltergiest activity. It would purely be the study of the ability to make objects move with the power of the mind.
That's my thinking on it anyway.

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
Mstik when you are referring to "extreme pk" you are referring to Psychokinetic powers correct? More of a telepathic power, even though psychokinetic powers produce physical effects, they are mental in nature.
This has always been my understanding of Poltergeist activity. Usually the activity happens when there is an adolescent in the home, and if I remember correctly wasn't it more common in a female adolescent? Usually an adolescent who may be under stress at that time in their lives. Unknowingly they are causing the activity telephathically.
In my humble opinion this activity is very different from activity caused by a ghost. That is why there is so much confusiion when it comes to poltergeist activity. it can appear to be the same thing, but in actuality are caused by two very different things. One from the living and one from the dead.

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
So, when things suddenly get "lost" and are found later... is that a poltergeist (ghost) or a tempermental teenager?

Re: Get to Know your Ghosts - Poltergeists
Whoohooo sorry about the intermission, had to pick up the kid from school.
Yes Spry, some females are more "prone" to the extreme pk than males, and like GB said about the bulbs blowing. Although it may have appeared to be caused by a haunting it could have been just as likely linked directly to her. It's believed to be linked to puberty changes.
Although it is hard or "tricky" to distinguish between the two activities investigators MUST keep the possibility of extreme pk in mind when doing an investigation of supposed poltergiest activities.
Because if they don't they could easily proclaim a case of a "True" poltergiest haunting taking place and not what it may actually be. That is why I feel it is the responsibility of the investigators to not just "LUMP" these two things together under poltergiest hauntings as I've seen so many do. There should be more emphasis placed on the PK any time that poltergiest activity is discussed.
Tash's question has opened up another can of worms for me, but I'll try to get off this soap box.... misplaced keys in a home does not qualify as poltergiest haunting. Something that simple is most likely always caused by. 1) a case of forgetfulness or someone just moving them to another location. 2) An intelligent haunting. 3) and this is not poltergiest or "Extreme" pk but it could be a small showing of someone's mental capabilities.
