Grandball Room
His figures flew flawlessly over the ivory keys of the grand piano, allowing the sweet music of the classic instrument to dance with the orange glow of the setting sun. Even with his eyes closed, the youngman’s fingers knew where to go next; they worked across the familiar keys with absolute perfection. Opening his pale blue eyes, Bryce stared straight forward at the stone statue that stood outside the grand windows of the grand ballroom; its back was to him facing the entry way of the Academy grounds. How he hated that statue, it was the first thing that he had seen when his mother brought him to the school, standing there mocking him that smile chiseled on it’s face, it’s right hand positioned in a welcoming gestured, while it’s left was hidden behind it’s back. “I think that is the silliest statue to have outside a school,” Emma had told him when they first arrived, but he knew she was smiling inside over having her image forever resting outside the school she founded, granting her a sense of immortality. Your mother is a wonderful woman, Bryce. A real saint, building this school and giving so many young teens guidance in their lives,” how many times had he heard that in his four years at the Academy, and every time he just smiled and thanked them for such kind words about his mother. If only they truly knew the reason for the school or how many of people’s lives she was responsible for destroying. What a saint she was, White Queen of the Hellfire Club, mother of the Black Queen and the White Squire. ‘How fun it will be to spit in her face once I join up with Charles and his X-men,’ Bryce thought, a smile crossing his face as the tune of the piano changed to that of an upbeat celebration.
A soft, almost silent, sound of footsteps on carpet alerted Bryce of an approaching visitor. “Hello Sam,” he said, before the girl had the chance to place her hands over his eyes.
“That is so not fair, how come you always know its me before you even see me?” the blonde girl asked draping her arms over Bryce’s shoulders and resting her chin on her right arm.
“Family secret, if I told you the beastly Emma Frost would rip your lungs out of before killing you.”
“If that @#%$ even tries I’ll punch her right in that ovaries, go right for the baby makers,” Samantha replied after getting off of Bryce and punching at the air as though Emma was standing in the room.
“Ha, I think you would be doing her a favor. After seeing what disappointments Gwen and I are, I doubt she ever wants to be near another kid again,” Bryce said laughing, the music form the piano stopping as he stood up and walked to the window.
“So, you still going to do it?” Samantha asked, joining her friend at the window and following his gaze to the back of the statue’s head.
“Which part? I’m leaving for Xavier’s Institute tomorrow morning, I’m still leaving the present for the school and my dear old mother is still scheduled for a face lift.” He said smiling as he thought of his plans for the next day.
“I’m going to miss you. This place just won’t be the same without my favorite fag in detention with me.”
“I’d offer to take you along but you lack a certain gene that is kind of required for Xavier’s. And besides, I don’t think your dad would allow you to leave this fine educational institute and their lovely uniforms,” Bryce joked, pulling at Samantha’s plaid skirt.
“I have two words for you, the first starts with ‘f’ and ends with…”
“Yah I got it Samantha. You know they say cursing is a sign of ignorance.”
“Well I have the same two words for whoever ‘they’ are. Damn, time for lock down,” the blonde girl said, flipping her long hair out of face as a bell rung, signaling time for the students to retire to their rooms for the night. “Good luck Bryce,” Samantha said before kissing her classmate on the check and hurrying out of the room, tears beginning to swell in her eyes.
“Goodbye…” Bryce whispered as his only friend at Mass. Academy disappeared behind a corner. Turning to face a bust of the current headmistress, Bryce raised his hand level with the small stone carving and released a force blast which shattered the bust upon contact.
