Hey, Mikey!
Hear you are having a lot of snow out your way. Want to borrow my snow plow. We could send it cross country on John Deer with a plow on it!
you will be getting this crap in a few days. by your standards 7 inches of snow isn't a heck of allot but it has brought us to a standstill. we have VERY hilly terrain much like San Francisco. last night we had freezing rain on top of the 7 inch total which made shoveling the sidewalks a mess. my back is KILLING me and I think I have broken another bone in my right foot. Walking is difficult but snow removal is important so that we can get up and down stairs to our home.
my daughter in law had surgery on tendon and ligments of her left had so jan and I have been watching the grandkids which adds to the exhaustion.
you will be needing that snow plow soon as this is the worst storm we have had since about '91 and they all end up really impacting the rest of the Country.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
OMG, Mike. That sounds awful. I heard some on the news about how difficult the storm was. Quite massive. You could from from Boston to Seattle and STILL be in snow.
We got 2 feet here, but it was gorgeous, fluffy snow. Didn't feel so fluffy after shoveling for a while, but my trusty snow blower (yep, I actually have and use one) got put to good use. It was an interesting storm, dumping in waves many inches an hour. Went on for several days, lightening up over time.
The rainy part comes tomorrow.
I hope you DIL's sugergy goes smoothly. That is a lot to go through. As for your aching back, I think the parent formula is simply perfect . . . a warm tub, a glass of wine (if one dares), and chocolate! I'm headed to the warm tub part right now.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
we get 'round 4' tomorrow night. we have about 14 inches total on the ground right now after melts. about 5 inches of compact snow and Ice on the roads around my neighborhood.
no snowblower just a snow shovel for me. people have no clue as to how to drive in this stuff. clearing the road around cars on the street is a bit of a hassle but i have to do it or cars would slid into my truck which is parked on the street. I also keep the gutters clear so that as it melts there is a way to get to the catch basins.
today is a calm day. I hope some more will melt off but the high is only going to be in the low 30's for today. snow is forecast for christmas morning too. next week may bring another blast. this last bout was the worst. train and bus routes are shut down along with many flight cancelations. they ran out of de-icer at the airport.
I hope you thaw out soon. Renee' has been in the 'banana belt' out on the coast of Oregon so she is pretty lucky.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
I remember the part about not knowing how to drive in the snow when I live in D.C. Roads would be impassable for days on end. We didn't have any hills, however. Sounds dreadful.
My house is at the end of a very steep set of hills. Often, when it snows, I love to sit at the top and wonder what it would be like to go down the roads on skiis to my house. My knees wouldn't take that any more, but it would be a beautiful, if all too short, run.
Hang in there. Our temp goes up 50 degress (yes, 50) over the next 2 days. The melt will be dreadful because the drains are clogged with ice. Should be fun.
Liz
P.S. The warm bath was perfect. How is your DIL doing?
Re: Hey, Mikey!
my DIL is doing well. had 1 week follow up with PT yesterday afternoon. still can't get the brace off and wash the wrist until saturday or lift the 5 month old but her parents made it in from Utah last night so she has them to help her out for the next week.
it is really icey this morning. the streets around my house are pretty flat luckily but people are driving way too fast for the conditions. Amtrak might start running from BC to Portland today. I don't know if the southern route to California is open or not. Greyhound is to start running sometime today. the backlog of flightts at Seatac is improving. hopefully people will make it home for Christmas. Seatac tried to get de icer from the Airforce Base here in Tacoma but were turned down. C 17 flights to Afghanistan are consuming much of their suppliees without any to spare for commercial aviation at other airports.
some people have been cross country skiing in my neighborhood. Sleds are everywhere too.
glad it is going to warm up for you. I hope the next blast of winter weather will come in 2010 for you.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
How weird is this. I can't find a snowing smily face, nor one that is pushing a snow plow for that matter! Could it be that there are no smiles in such situations. Nonsense!
Re: Hey, Mikey!
35 for a high today, back down to 33 at 9:15pm snow showers overnight replenishing snow on roofs for the sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer to land on. landing lights are lit and the chimney is cleaned for a soft landing by Santa. cookies and hot chocolate milk were put out by my grandson just before he went home tonight.
Grandpa ate too much baked Ham and scalloped potatoes with chocolate pie for desert.
the only snow left is from the piles of snow left from shoveling the driveway and walks and stairs. I am so glad this mess is over for us but near the Passes, it is still a mess with snow above 1,000 feet and another 10 inches or more possible each day all week long. the ski resorts are pretty happy as some got over 4 feet of snow in the past week.
we won't see a 60 degree reading for months to come and the sun has been missing from the picture too.
depressing really,
Mike
high winds and rain from here should make the plains by tonight and then into the northeast in a couple of days. lots of rain in the Lowlands and several feet of new snow has closed passes for avalanche control in the North Cascades. I saw you got an additional six inches of snow to remove so I hope your snowblower is all tuned up for the upcoming storms. they are lined up coming from the middle pacific (Hawaiian express we call them) warm air in the Mid Forties with lots of rain in store. things could get ugly over the next few days in Michigan and on toward you there in Boston.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
we got more snow, then it started raining BUCKETS and now we have a River of rain coming from Hawaii (the meteorolgists words not mine) expected to last for several days. this should reach you probably starting tomorrow I am sad to say. i just hope and pray that most of the moisture will be wrung out as it passes over the rockies headed to Arkansas and then back up to you.
at least it has warmed up a bit but the snowlevel is up to 7,000 feet with this stuff meaning Major lowland flooding is expected from snow melting in the mountains and from copious rainfall.
how are you hands doing with the cold and hard work removing the snow?
Mine still haven't recovered. at least the Raynaud's isn't quite as intense with the warm (50 deg) daytime temps.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
Well the rain hasn't stopped 4 inches here at my home in Tacoma in the past 24 hours. Interstate 5 north of Tacoma city limits will be shut down any minute for flooding.
Areas of this River VAlley are under mandatory evacuation. 65 miles south of Tacoma, Interstate 5 has just been shut down for twenty miles with 6 to 8 feet of water over the Roadway along the Chehalis river valley. AMTRAC between VAncouver B.C. and Portland has just shut down due to landslides blocking various points of the Road. White Pass has also been shut down and so has Steven's pass two of the MAJOR highways between Western Washington and Eastern. HIghway 410 which leads between western Washington and Yakima has a stretch of highway under water in the Auburn area just about 15 miles north of Tacoma too and then just below the pass it is once again closed to trees over the road and water. that leaves us one Road across the Cascade mountain range to get out of here. I don't know if highway 101 is open between Olympia and the Columbia River but that is the only way that I know of still open this is a two lane highway.
the only other way out would be north to Canada and around this mess. God's country has turned into one soggy mess.
Washington. you may recall the flooding we had south of Tacoma a few years ago. this flooding is MUCH more extensive throughout much of Western Washington. This rain is to continue into Friday. A state of Emergency exists in many areas of Washington State including the east slops of the Cascades and even into Spokane and northern Idaho and Montana. I hope this doesn't track over to you in Boston. add some cold and you would be under many feet of snow.
we got 4 inches of rain in TAcoma, south of here it is about 8 inches where the freeway is closed, the Cascades have gotten 8 inches of rain and if this does make it across it will have allot of moisture left to snarl the entire northern half of the USA.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
I forgot to mention that Oregon is getting hammered really hard too. Highway 101 just north of Seaside has just been shut down. hopefully the river in downtown Portland won't go over it's banks. Renee' told me that rain hasn't been a problem so far out on the Coast at Depoe Bay but wind is of concern (up to 65 miles per hour gusts).
the coast of Washington has received allot of rain and high winds too.
Re: Hey, Mikey!
The closed interstate 90 to East and West bound traffic. hwy 101 south and north is closed too as well as interstate 5 with water over the road 8 ft deep. I5 will be closed for the next 4 days at a minimum so the ONLY way out is north to canada or via air.
the sun is out, the wind is finally subsiding and hopefully we won't have anymore monsoon rains.
I NEED SUMMER TO GET HERE QUICK!
Re: Hey, Mikey!
The got interstates in and out both south and east opened so HURRAY! now to recover from the mud everywhere that it has flooded or slid down to the roads or into yards.
next week is supposed to be fairly nice so this too shall pass for you in a day or so as long as they can get the jet stream coming out of the Gulf of Mexico to turn right and dump on Georgia where they need the rain.
