Hoobastank: coming to conquer Europe
The American college-rock band Hoobastank will be performing at the Dutch Pinkpop-festival tomorrow and next week they will be playing at the German double-festival Rock am Ring / Rock im Park. What are they about?
Unlike many of their rock peers, Hoobastank--who recently released their sophomore album, The Reason, featuring the huge crossover ballad "The Reason" (Great song !!) --aren't a bunch of angst-ridden, self-pitying sad-sacks. Dan Estrin (guitar), Douglas Robb (vocals), Markku Lappalainen (bass), and Chris Hesse (drums) grew up as well-adjusted kids in the family-friendly South California suburb of Agoura, California, and this is apparent in their upbeat sound and close friendship
with each other. After all of that whining from tortured-artist types like Staind and Creed, such healthy attitudes are
indeed refreshing.
On the question what does Hoobastank sound like the guys replied: "I'd say it's in between, like, Britney Spears and Metallica. Somewhere in between those categories. I think it's just rock. Positive rock--nothing angry about our music. There's some maybe angry moments, but all in all, it's positive. I don't think--they're probably going to shoot me for this--but I don't think it's very groundbreaking; I don't think we're doing something that hasn't been done before. But I think it's not very trendy. I think it's just rock music with good songs and lyrics, lyrics that people can relate to, grab onto; it's just stuff that I've been through just being a normal guy. I think a lot of people can relate to it, like songs like that never go out of style. Good songs are timeless."
Bassplayer Markku used to have a remarkable job before, he used to do art direction for adult entertainment. According to him he did it for the money and he may even be seen in a couple of pornographic videos. Statement: "It was kind of a fun job...kind of degrading for women. But the money was good, so what can I say?"

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.
