Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
got to admit, if it wasn't for his solo stuff, i wouldn't have got into squeeze at all...i caught him performing some solo stuff as well as some squeeze songs back in december last year (2002, so year before really), and despite not knowing who he was, thinking it was all very fantastic and buying his solo album and the big squeeze album the next day
still probably listen to this album with more regularity than most of my others, i think the songs are just great

Really?! That's fantastic! It's so nice to know that the solo audiences don't merely consist of Squeeze fans . . . For the guys themselves, as well as us!

Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
just great songs played in a venue with acoustics to die for...i'd only gone to see john and wayne with francis dunnery, so had no idea who he was, so it was a bit weird sat there thinking "wow, these songs are great" cos a couple of songs later it was "this is familiar" to "oh my god he's in squeeze isn't he??"
quite impressed with myself how many songs i did recognize, considering i wasn't a fan, just remember it all from growing up and hearing it on the radio i suppose
Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
I think his solo stuff is fantastic and it’s not at all what I was expecting. Strange to say, but it is a revelation that he can actually sing! (And I say that as a fan of Striking Matches, Heaven and the like.)
Musically it is a bit of a departure from Squeeze, but it's none the worse for that. My favourite track is probably No Show Jones, but that's maybe just me being sentimental given the subject matter.
I don't know if anyone else has the "Cowboys" single, but Chris does a surprisingly decent version of Black Coffee in Bed as a "B side".
I always thought even loyal Squeeze fans undervalued Chris and it’s good to know he’s doing well on his own.
Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
I've heard him sing BCIB in the radio. It's very different from the Glenn/Squeeze version.
It's curious that even the die hard Glenn fans I know all said that Chris's album was alot better than they had expected it to be (self included). I find myself revisiting tracks that play in the back of my mind from the album quite often. Favourite tracks would probably be No Show (same reason as you, probably Steven. I think it's quite an affectionate tribute to his Squeeze days), Parents and For a Change (which for some reason reminds me of Bobby Goldsborough's Summer the First Time!).
And the lyrics are wonderful of course, so it's a complete mystery why he didn't put them on the album sleeve - although they can now be found on his website, it's not quite the same.

Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
yeah, i like the website, but it takes forever to load up on my old piece of junk that i laughingly refer to as a pc.
is anyone else on the diffworld yahoo group mailing list? cos someone (think tami, but not sure) has put up the best photo of him...it's the whippet photo, and i had to laugh basically
Re: I Didn't Get Where I Am
I was on the Difford list but unsubbed the other day. Is that the really really skinny picture of Chris looking about 15? It is hard to imagine that he was ever like that If you haven't happened across them there's a whole series of pictures of Squeeze looking very young, very scrawny and totally degenerate in the way every self respecting young band should, all taken by the same photographer.
I have the same problem as you porgblue - it takes about a minute for my poor wee narrowband connection to download the opening page of Chris's site, although it all looks very flash once you're in there. And even when you do he doesn't update it for months. However, having said that it has just been updated to tell us all what happened in the VH1 thing. No surprises there.
