Regarding New Members:
With every application submitted the admins and mods who have offered their time and service are responsible for reading AND commenting on each application. Once this is done, the admin or mod is to decide what is seriously lacking in the bio, this is what they usually comment about, problem areas they think require improvement to help lift your standards to the degree this board tries to keep our players. Now we have many mods and four admins, to have a bio accepted requires the passing approval of just three of the nine helpers, now that’s one third of the total rank that just has to read over an individual bio. Once a player has received three stamps then that player may start.
The problem is that many of the times the admins and mods are busy with different things, leaving only generally two people around to constantly be there to give opinions and stamps. That is myself (Angela) and Matt. In my absence Matt because the sole stamper that greets most new members, and this can be quite intimidating since Matt is far more elite then the rest of the stampers. Keep in mind that all of Matt’s comments are suggestions, improvements that he thinks will help develop the bio, other stampers generally tend to be commenting on the bare minimal requirements the new player needs to meet before they agree to give their stamps. Both these approaches are good in their own way. We can’t have two people leaving an entire list of things that need to be changed and improved, I have on occasions done an extremely long list of comments but I do hope I was also giving advice on how to go around improving their problem areas – off the top of my head I can’t remember.
Natalie (Nat) has sever time deficiencies, Will, Dan, Jen and Lady all have university or work or both and tend to get caught up in that reality thing most of us hear about now and then but prefer to ignore! Judo is a fantastic bio mod only he is so caught up in his own personal problems and work on top of it all that the poor guy can’t get around to even posting, let alone checking other peoples bios. I am fully willing to have other people request positions for moding so that they can help not only speed along the acceptance process but also add more variety to the mixture, of course it depends on their writing skills a little and their duration of membership. Last time a mod was accepted right off after joining turned out to be… rather unpleasant.
Now, let’s say three mods/admins have stamped you but there is a complaint or suggestion or request that someone else has made as a reason not to stamp the app but those that stamped think that it isn’t entirely necessary. What do you do? Well, quite honestly that is up to the new player. Take into account that everything suggested and requested is so that you can better improve the characters believability and depth. We like detail, we love flavour, and we adore length but let us not let that get to our heads. Not everyone is a novelist in the making, some people are only just starting out. I was Rping for years, my writing was horrific until about a year and a half ago, and still I have my down points at times as Jenn can readily agree. If YOU as the new player think you are up to changing your bio even with all those required stamps, then that is most wonderful, take that challenge and do your best. However it’s not the end of the world if you don’t, as long as you’ve read and understood what is required to actually post in the board, that we like detail but above all else we thrive off improvement.
People have complained at one point or another that they can’t write as long or detailed posts as some others, but with every post they did they have improved, and still are improving. We all are, I play with a lot of people and I enjoy watching them grow and sometimes the only chance they have is us letting them become part of our team so that they can learn from the rest of us! I learned a lot from Jenn, hell, can that girl go into detail or what? Need I remind her of that post on the boots her Catherine character brought when we had that story over in Lost Angels? XD Needless to say, with everyone I play with, I get a little of them added into my posts.
Some of our best posters were nowhere near the level others were at when they first joined the board. And some barely knew a thing about computers! So there is no excuse why you cannot improve, if I can improve and computer illiterate folks can now make siggies aaaaall by themselves without too many problems, then I say anyone can do it!
Admins and Mods just have to take this all into account, New Evolution is a skilled RPG, but we aren’t an elitist group, we have a set minimal of about 500 words to a post and any less is when we start to prod you a little, fair enough there are times imagination runs slack on us… But a constant barrage of tiny posts isn’t enjoyable and gives the person/s with you little to reply to. 500 isn’t bad, I’m just over six hundred words now and for me this is a pretty small amount… then again I’ve done a few 3000-5000 worded posts! Not that extremely long posts are always fantastic either… I’m sure more then one person has looked at my mass of text and gone “…*sighs*…” before reluctantly reading through as much as possible XD
Remember that you can always improve a bio later as well, not do any sort of drastic make over but add things as you get a better grip on your writing skills and character as well. Don’t be afraid of exploring possibilities of discussing things with the mods and admins, Matt and Loza and even Ann who is often caught in the middle of things (Hey, she chose to play poor over worked Beast) tend to have a pretty good grasp on what’s going on. Loza is basically the super brain(less ) of the evil underworld. If you want nastiness of any kind go talk with her, she has the brotherhood and the mavericks are there somewhere as well… Be patient with her, she can be slow at times
Matt tends to have a good grasp on my side of things, feel free to email me at any time but if you prefer to talk it over with someone the best step would probably be to talk with Matt as he tends to be the one who’s on the most when I’m around and so is more up to date with my plans. Chances are Ann knows a good few things and even though she hasn’t offered her services as a Mod (hint hint) she’s still a delight to talk with.
Don’t be afraid to drop a line to all the admins, ask every one of them the same question and see what you get back, make sure you of course mention that you’ve asked the others so that there isn’t some sort of war over ‘he said, she said’, I don’t want a player asking one admin something and then not liking the answer and going to someone else for a better response. If there’s dispute between the ranks of the board helpers, then of course they are to talk with me so that I understand why they think whatever they are thinking and once I understand their points of views I can help make a final judgement. I’m luckly because even if they don’t agree they tend to remain silent and just pretend they are ok with the decisions! *Nudges torturing tools off into the corner*
Regarding Ranks and Problems:
There is not set order of ranks, even Mods and Admins are basically not of ‘higher level’ then the other, there is me, and then there is everyone else. *Looks down at them with an evil glint in her eyes* Mwuhaha…
Basically different people have different strengths and usefulness and they lend their hands where they think they can be of best help. Mods are mostly focused on stamping and post monitoring, admins try and do the hole range of things though mods are just as free to help out as much as they want as well. Some people may find they aren’t really able to properly stamp bios because they aren’t sure what they are exactly looking for, but they may always be around to answer a question someone has or help out when someone is having troubles somewhere. Just because one person does more or less of these things doesn’t make them even more or less of a helper. If all else fails, give me an email, I’d warn against private messaging me in any account other then Forgotten Love, otherwise I may not get around to noticing your letter for a great long time – if I’m lucky to notice it at all. I have way too many accounts so I only log into them when I post with that character and log right back out again, Forgotten Love is the one I constantly remain in between posts though!
My email is listed under ‘Admin Contacts’, just clink on my name << Angela >> same goes of course with the others listed there, click their names for instant emailing ease!
This can be for rambling, comments you want to ask me directly, complaints you want more private, questions you’re unsure of, character story plots and other twists here and there and whatever else you want, even a simple hello is all nice and well, I don’t mind at all! Don’t be afraid to add me to your MSN list, though now I’ll be on less, there may be a chance you can chat with me if you catch me online. For now I suggest you message my Forgotten Love account, as sometimes I am forgetting to log into hotmail while rushing around collecting posts. Don’t be afraid of flooding my box, I have ezSupporter so send as many PMs as you want…*grovels at Matt’s feet* It was a bribery of sorts I’m sure, nah…even evil Naggers of doom have a wonderful side to themselves, there’s my B-day pressie as proof!
Problems amongst the Ranks:
With so many different people from different places and with different attitudes and personalities and opinions, there’s of course going to be times where things come to a clash. This is alright as long as the problems are handled, ignoring the matter may be worse in the end then dealing with it regardless of the frustration it may cause to rise. We’re real people here, we have issues, let’s not pretend that they aren’t important just because we can’t stand face to face and look each other in the eyes.
I had a problem with someone once, and instead of talking with him about it I tended to always let it slip by, it got really out of hand for a while, especially when I finally got upset and really told him off, I think it came as a shock to him and for that I felt really bad. Talking about our issues is a must, fair enough we come here to relax and have fun, but we’re human(ish) and that in itself causes problems.
Sometimes talking with a person about the problem doesn’t always help, but it is a good start, that way at least they know there’s some issues starting to surface instead of it coming up out of the blue and causing more stress then anyone intended. Everyone here is wonderful, a fantastic assortment of kind and often even responsible and on rare occasions even mature people. No one here does anything out of malice or egotism. So chances are if you’re upset about something talking with the person who has caused that hurt will help you understand what was fully intended and that the misunderstanding wasn’t an intentional attack of any kind.
However if you find that talking hasn’t really helped, or that you haven’t been able to really express the problems the way you intended on doing so, then please feel assured that you are able to come to me…assuming of course I’m not the one you’re having problems with, in that case, go to someone else *shoos them off*
On a serious not if you are having troubles with me then really do try and contact one of the other admins or mods, I’m sure they know me well enough to help figure out what’s going on and put in their own points of views. Going back to the main issue, I highly doubt you’ll have a problem with me, from the top of my head I can only recall two people I’ve ever had issues with here to the point of getting really upset and ranting my head off, one left the board never to be seen again and the other is one of the mods… and I wont mention the name… *Glances about*…but at least you can see that even if there are times we don’t get along peachy, we always try and find a way to over come that and repair whatever damage was done! *Cuddles her mods and admins*
I want people to also know that although of all the people out there Matt does tend to be the one who’s…eeeeeverywhere! And that is a great asset to NE but that doesn’t mean he is in charge during my absence, as I said, you’re all equal, and I hope you’re all doing your part with that notion in mind. Dan has just as much right to tell someone off for being rude or slacking in postings or whatever as I do. Loza has been a member of NE the longest and has many many many characters (however I proudly state I still out do all of them character obsessed freaks! ) so it’s highly likely that she’ll know more about the board then say… Little miss never around Natalie! *Smiles sweetly* Matt will have a good idea on what’s being planned about the board as well as what has happened and Jenn is fantastic to talk with if you want to get ideas on what to write about, she is very nice to speak with so don’t be afraid to approach her for advice of any kind. She takes part in a few threads and she’s involved with one of my characters that is basically involved with EVERYTHING so she’d probably also have an idea on some of the things happening. She’s also very creative and speaks her mind. If you think someone has done you wrong, go see our lovely Jenn, she’ll deal with it, even if all you’re doing is going to her and complaining about something because you’re afraid of going to the main boss…*Knows how uncomfortable it can feel to talk with a stranger who’s in charge of so many others* I mean seriously though… this is me we are talking about… how can I possibly be scary? I’m so tiny…
Judo is a beautiful person to chat with, a lot of fun and serious or playful or a mixture of both at all times, never be afraid of calling him up if you see him around, he’s a delight to chat with and even if he is never around to post he is at least able to throw in his two cents, and he has a very creative mind, go pick it for all its worth, he’s not using it for anything important anyway! Of all the people to go to if there is a civil problem regarding troubles with other players, I suggest you go to Judo for advice, he is very diplomatic, and can often smoothen things out without wrinkling them up in the process.
In Conclusion:
A bio needs three stamps, it may seem impolite to accept someone after another person has withheld their stamp for one reason or another, but as long as the main problem areas that were mentioned and agreed upon of all admins where dealt with, then the additional areas that were not as perfect as some may wish can be passed. At least they have been commented on and the player is away that there is a chance to improve that area. Also, be sure to mention in your stamps what is important, and what is less important.
Primary changes are the things that really need to be given attention for some reason, these would be things that are bluntly obvious as incorrect and really need fixing up.
For Secondary things which are more suggestions then demands, make sure to make a clear note that the following isn’t as important but are good suggestions to help improve certain aspects of the bio. If players have a problem with how their bio is being handled, or stampers have problems with other stampers being overly relaxed/elite in their duties, feel free to call me in, even if I’ve been in your bio and commented or stamped myself, still send me a letter. Because all my stampers have freedom of speech, their input is valuable and unless they are being unfair then I let them make their comments so that you as a new player get the most out of the team that is here to help you.
Will you have this dance with me... will dance in my arms forever?
