Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
I need some advice-- I am 6ft 8in tall and currently weigh 310 -- am 46 yrs old -- I am on high blood pressure medication - I need to find out what foods should I concentrate eating exclusively to assist in me losing weight. I have a hearty appetite and can't seem to shake the need for sugar. I need advice on what to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacking. I am about to start up on working out again-- had nasal surgery in nov02 - gettin started in weight lifting has been extremely difficult to near impossible--what is most important -- aerobics for a few months then add on weight training or what---I really would like to know what I should do. Thanks

First of all, based on standard weight charts, your weight should be somewhere between 207 and 227 based on average bodyfat and whether you are medium or large framed. I am assuming that the excess weight (310) is not all muscle.

First of all, at age 46, you are starting out the same place that I did, so don't make the same mistakes that I did. Start by working out 3 days a week - including 20-45 minutes of cardio and a full body workout (one exercise per bodypart) with light weights at first progressing to medium poundage only. Do this for at least 8 weeks to get your body conditioned into working out (and prevent ligament/tendon damage). Couple this with a good carbohydrate restricted diet (Atkins, protein ower, sugar busters, etc)and a fat burner. You're trying to lose bodyfat during this phase, but not muscle, so make sure to get at least 1 gram of protein per pound of LEAN bodyweight (I'm guessing in your case that to be about 180 - if you can calculate it better that would be great). Don't over do the lifting! - otherwise, with the carb restricted diet, you may lose some mass.

Keep taking your meds. When your weight comes down, then check with your Doc about the need for the BP medication (or maybe a reduction) When I was 240 pounds I needed it, when I got down under 200 I didn't.

After a couple of mnths when your weight is down then consider adding mass.

YOU'VE GOT TO KICK THE SUGAR HABIT!!!

Good Luck

Re: Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
Towering Beef,

WOW! I don't mean this to sound offensive but I would love to meet you if you are really 6'8" tall. I have been having these dreams, lately, where I find myself small and puny, about half the height of other guys and I am wondering whether these dreams would stop if I could meet a really tall guy. I am not particularly short at 5'10" but since I keep having these dreams where I am significantly shorter than other men, I would be most curious to see what it would feel like to meet a guy who would tower over me in height. Ideally, I would love to find myself surrounded by several guys at the same time who towered over me.

Anyway, I have been working out for years and like you, I am on medication, I suspect more medication than you. No matter what I eat or don't eat, no matter how much aerobics I do etc, I can not seem to reduce the size of my stomach. Recently, I have come to the conclusion that it isn't fat but rather my stomach is filled with gas or I am retaining lots of fluids, not sure which. My stomach isn't squishy like most guys who are fat but harder like a basketball. I also am drawing this conclusion because everyone I know on medication is having problems with large stomachs.

After doing just about everything I can think of to lose fat, reduce my stomach and get a muscular look, I am very close to giving up. I spend a lot of time in the gym and workout hard that it frustrates me to have other guys who don't go to a gym at all and do nothing but eat look better and more muscular than I do. My last effort is on my next doctor's appointment, next Tuesday 22nd of April, I am going to inform my doctor, he either helps me lose the gut or I will stop taking the medication. This sounds extreme but the excess weight is making me feel worse than the conditions I am taking the medication for in the first place. Not to mention it is starting to depress me.

I have read lots of times about doing aerobics and eating less carbohydrates and more proteins, but it just doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe my problem is that I just really need a buddy to help me monitor what I am doing and make sure I am doing all that I should be doing.

Do not disregard what others are telling you. Perhaps I am just stupid and think I am doing that which I should but it seems as if my health problems make my body work differently than everyone else's. And as for fat burners, I have taken them in the past but they advice people with my problems to not take them. Consequently, I have become afraid to take them again.

The bottom line is that I am becoming so depressed wanting to be lean and muscular and feeling frustrated that I can not get there that I am literally ready to put my life on the line to achieve the necessary results.

I am curious to know whether you are successful at reducing and if so, what you did to accomplish it. I am also curious to hear other people's story on how they reduced their weight and what, if any conditions they were fighting to accomplish it.

Hey Guy, you didn't mention what type of medication you are on, but what you describe sounds like you may be on a protease inhibitor. These meds have a side effect of redepositing fat into the gut area. It this is what you are on.... well, personally, I'd rather have a hard large gut than the alternative. Talk to your doc.. please. Also, talk to him about the new generation (non-ephedra) fat burners to see their compatibility with your medication.

Best wishes

Re: Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
Actually, I am on, it seems, everything. I have two pills for type II Diabetes, one for high blood pressure and one for high cholesterol. As for fat burners, my doctor is against them.

To be honest with you, I have been in love with the look of muscles ever since I was a kid. Now that I am getting older, I have reached the decision that I must get in good shape and look good before I become old looking. This seems to be more important to me than life itself. Also, because I have such a great love for muscles and I would love to be able to appreciate muscles on other guys as well (I know that sounds bad but...) it seems as if this will not happen until I look nice and muscular myself. Muscle guys in my area are few and far between, it seems and they all find the appearance of the other guy important.

In any case, I am tured of putting on my pants and they are tight and do not fit. It actually is embarrassing that everyone knows I workout so often and yet I don't look it. Actually, I can see that I have muscles but I need to sculpt them more so they look better. I guess I can not explain it other than to say that there isn't any leeway on this one. I need to be lean and muscular. Muscle size isn't as important to me as definition, although I would love to be able to see and touch the muscles on a big bodybuilder. I doubt that will ever happen, especially if I do not get in better shape myself.

Also, I have actually felt less healthy being on the medication. While walking to my car after work, I find myself gasping for breath for about 3 to 5 minutes as I drive away from work. Also, I find it takes my breath away literally when I try and bend over to tie my shoes. This wasn't this way back in October 2002.

The combination of not feeling so great and being so into getting muscular makes this very important to me.

Re: Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
OK Bob, I understand where you are. I understand because that is where I was a few years ago.

I you look back at my first response to this thread, I mentioned a low carbohydrate diet - like Atkins. For you this is the key. This is reinforced by a short article I just read in a new fitness mag called FitnessRX which should be on your newsstand right now. On page 22 there is a short artcle about research by the U of Cincinatti which found that that the Atkins type diet (lo carb) was twice as effective as lofat diets for quick weight loss - though because of its limited menu (like steak, chicken and fish) many women found it hard to stay on it for long periods (guess the ladies don't have the will power of men). I can honestly say that I know of NO ONE that this diet has not been effective on. But - you can't cheat - and I know that sugar is a problem for you.

In any event, I want you to go down to the local bookstore and buy "Protein Power" by Drs. Eade (husband and wife medical doctors). They go into detail about low carbohydrate diets, and their effect on blood pressure and diabetes. (all positive effects). Read it and UNDERSTAND it. The response they describe is in every medical textbook.

It is understandable that your doctor doesn't want you on fat burners. Until very recently, most fat burners were ephedrine based and were a no-no with high blood pressure. The new generation of non-ephedra burners, should be safe, but get your doctors approval in any event. Be assured that they are NOT NECESSARY. I went from 245 down to 193 in a little over 4 months on a low carb diet without fat burners (they weren't invented at that time). 22 the first month! They just can give you that little extra - but they won't compensate for a bad diet.

Get a fair amount of cardio in and light weight lifting for maintaining muscle tone. This will shed the bodyfat - but don't expect to build muscle on this diet. Get the definition first, then add muscle mass later. Trying to do both is very difficult if not impossible unless you have the proper genetics (mesomorph)

Expect a few days of being tired, but your energy should return at higher levels. Maybe after a week or two when your pants are loose, you'll have the drive to keep it up and lay off the sugar.

Keep at it!
My best

Re: Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
Sorry, I don't mean to be so silent. I hear what you are saying and I thought that I had done just that but perhaps I haven't shifted enough towards protein and away from carbs. I do know that my doctor is opposed to avoiding carbs totally, so I have tried to shift more in the direction of proteins. I will, however, have to give it another try lessening my carb intake even further. Thanks again for the advice.

Re: Losing Weight/Fat while eating the right Foods
For what it's worth, in the induction phase of the Atkins plan, he recommends a max of 20 grams of good quality carbs (vegetables) per day for the first week or two.....after which you can start adding 5 gms daily per week. See what you are currently eating and compare. I found that while I was a couch potato, this (20-25) was my max.... period in the following weeks! Even doing light exercise only raised the carbs I could get away with a small amount. But, the results were worth it!.

BTW I mentioned FitnessRX mag..... This is a very good mag, one that I will continue to get. There is a lot of dietary stuff in issue 1 - and it all supports low carb.
