Behind the Scenes, Funny Moments at the MTV Movie Awards
By Vanessa Sibbald
June 2, 2002

HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - While there may not have been anything as good as Courtney Love throwing makeup at Kurt Loder and Madonna, the "2002 MTV Movie Awards" had it's share of highlights and Zap2it was on hand to catch them all -- including Seann William Scott giving us the scoop behind the award-winning Best Kiss.

Here's a list of the best on-screen and behind-the-scenes from this year's awards show, which was taped Saturday night (June 1), to be aired on MTV starting Thursday, June 6 at 9 p.m.

Best red carpet moment: Ben Affleck surprising former co-star Kate Beckinsale with a kiss on the back of her neck while she was doing an interview.

Funniest moment: It's a tie between Adam Sandler quizzing Winona Ryder on whether her "boobs" were real (there's made of gelatin, she joked) and Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar's opening musical number, "Movies Kick Ass."

Best acceptance speech: Reese Witherspoon on her daughter saying that she wasn't as funny as the donkey from "Shrek"

Best moment a fight could have broken out: During Vin Diesel and Paul Walker's tense acceptance for the Best On-Screen Team award. Diesel thanked the film's director Rob Cohen, who along with the actor has opted out of the remake, while Walker, who is signed on for the following film, looked tensely on. Neither spoke to the press backstage.

Best on-stage flirting: Nicole Kidman joking about being disappointed about not winning for Best Kiss, "maybe we needed more practice" she laughed. "Maybe next time."

Best huh? moment: Brittany Murphy, putting on her best "Showgirls" look, and Eddie "Undercover Brother" Griffin's incomprehensible award presentation for the Best Breakthrough Role Male.

Best eulogy: Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman saying "Ass crack" in unison in honor of deceased director Ted Demme.

Best response to the 'Who are you wearing?' question: "I have no idea, my wife puts stuff out on the bed and I put it on," Will Smith.

Worst MTV decision of the night: Goes to the event's backstage crew, who whisked away Nicole Kidman, despite the fact that she expressed interest in answering more questions, to make time for Kelly Osbourne.

Stars who eschewed the red carpet: Matt Damon, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Andy Garcia, Winona Ryder, Nicolas Cage and Mike Myers.

Best backstage quotes:

Chris Tucker backstage talking about seeing "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" with Michael Jackson -- "There's nothing like going to the movies with the king of pop." Who paid for the popcorn? "We got free popcorn."

"Last [question] You can't shut me up!" Nicole Kidman to journalists backstage.

"My wife likes me better now. I was a little big, I got up to 222-223 pounds, so now I'm done to 204-205 and I'm still strong baby," Will Smith on his weight gain for "Ali."

Seann William Scott on how many takes it took to capture his award-winning kiss -- "Way too many. We were already on number three and I told Jason, 'Dude, I've done this before. I don't need to practice.' But this guy's crazy about rehearsal, he's a perfectionist. He said, 'Hey Seann, I'm a little nervous about this. Just come to my trailer and we'll practice. I have Altoids.' And then what happened is, even after the shot, he was still coming up to me asking, 'Do you think I'm sexy?' and inviting me over… He actually wrote me a letter a couple says ago, just wondering if I still felt the same way about him."

"When I did 'Moulin Rouge' I thought, 'God, it's so wonderful to do a love story' and I'd never done one before," Nicole Kidman.

"Jackie Chan, he does it all. He's the best action choreographer in the world. I just have to sit back in my trailer and wait for him to call me out, 'Chris, I'm ready.' That's why I like working with him," Chris Tucker on his Best Fight co-star.

"I know that they are going to do a sequel, but I heard that they're going to use unknowns. I think, with the first one, it was supposed to be quite a different movie than the way it turned out to be, so I think I'll let that one go and see what they do with [it]," Scott on the sequel to "Dude Where's My Car"

" Well, you know, I think there's a lot of things that are incredible about me, but I think the thing most amazing about me is my humility," Smith explaining the coolest thing about him.
