Name: Maximillian Vincent Mackenzie the second
Nickname: Most commonly known as 'Mac', sometimes friends might call him 'kenzie if they're feeling a little less sober or more playful than usual. Maximillian he hears from his family and from teachers or new people who don't know him very well only. His full name including 'the second' only serves to make him angry...and, green or not, you wouldn't like him when he's angry. Sometimes he gets called 'junior' by his father and, like Indiana Jones, he's not keen on this particular nickname.
Code Name: Regress
Affiliation: Xavier's school. He was removed from his team because he was beginning to display signs of reckless behaviour, wilful disregard for the rules and other less than acceptable things after his father's defection.
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Birthday: July 9th
Hair: naturally a medium brown colour and kept fairly short. When it grows a bit longer he shapes it into short spikes onto of his head.
Eyes: two of a ginger brown colour.
Mother: Lauren Baines-Mackenzie (made-up, deceased)
Father: Maximillian Vincent Mackenzie Sr. (made-up, alive)

Physical Description:

Mac is not your classically tall dark and handsome guy but he has charisma and a certain amount of charm, when he chooses to use it. He has a long face with thin lips that tend towards either a smirk or a boyish smile. He's clean-shaven and keeps his haircut simple and fairly short, occasionally spiking some of his dark locks into points. Mac's eyes are not exceptional in colour (brown) or depth and yet they're very expressive. He has an intensity of gaze when being serious and a spark of humour and cynicism when not. He wears his emotions clearly on his face and, despite his tough exterior, is on the sensitive side of things. If something upsets him it will show and playing poker is the one thing he should never attempt to do.

The contradiction in Mac is that he exudes cynicism and talks loudly about the problems in life yet despite his pessimism he believes and has hope. Often if something bad happens he goes through denial but when it sinks in that there is no hope the heartbroken look, like a child who has just found out in a bad way that there is no Santa Claus, is heartbreaking. When there is hope he can absolutely light up but it's even easier to fall when hopes come crashing down again.

Tall, at six foot, he has the handy advantage of being able to look down on many people quite literally. His build is slim but not without muscle. His walk is a long relaxed stride with confidence that borders on arrogance. Vocally, Mac is a tenor whose tone is often sarcastic or condescending.

In terms of clothing Mac isn't a style icon and he doesn't want to be. He dresses casually, usually in plain T-shirts or shirts with a logo or band on the front worn under a jean, khaki or cord jacket of some variety. His pants are usually jeans or khakis and it is rare to see Mac dressed up above this level in any way although he wears a suit well. Mac does have a fondness for running shoes and has a few pairs in various bright colours.

Powers:

Relive

Mac is able to make people relive memories. His powers came at him suddenly and quickly and he is still working to gain more control over them; As a result he is currently unable to control which memory a person might relive. The closest he can get is sending it in a direction, negative or positive. If he had a friend to do a favour for he might recall a positive memory for them. In this case his powers draw upon the stored memory and bring it back with more detail than the subject could call upon consciously themselves. It is as though they are there all over again and they will likely be completely consumed for a few minutes, the usual duration of a reliving experience.

This power does come in handy for recalling details a person doesn't even remember, sort of like hypnosis might get a person to remember things. It's handy for remembering a particular day or for anyone who witnesses a crime. Reliving also serves as a good distraction if Mac wants to get away or slip past without notice.

It does require physical contact of somekind between Mac and the subject but it can be a light touch and contact does not have to be maintained. If contact is maintained the reliving experience will be stronger and longer than a brief touch.

Since Mac can't control what a person sees, and he doesn't see the results himself, there is the touchy area of bringing up something the subject really doesn't want to see again and the nature of privacy is called into question when a person doesn't have full control over their mind for a few minutes. This makes some people wary of Mac, at least if they know his powers...or his personality for that matter!

Entrapment

Mac is able to trap a person inside their memories on a constant loop that may last anywhere from five or ten minutes to a matter of hours. That person is rarely reachable by outside stimuli and appears catatonic. This is similar to the state of Buffy in season five when she believes she cannot save Dawn and Willow goes in after her.

The memory that appears, or series of memories, are something he cannot occur. They might be pleasant or they might not be, generally they are the thoughts most recent in the subject's mind so what they were thinking of when Mac invoked his powers. The more mental strength a person has (for example a telepath like Jean Grey or the Professor) the easier to resist and these sorts of people will likely be trapped for less time than otherwise. Again contact must be made for a connection to be established although after the initial effort of entrapment it is not a draining process as the subject's mind is what mistakenly keeps them there, not Mac's constant hold over them.

Mind Walker

Mac is also capable of going into someone else's mind. Their mind may appear in full out memories of the past or the mind may appear, to Mac, to be a familiar location like Xavier's complete with halls and classrooms and familiar characters. (Hush Trekkies [especially you Julian Bashir fans], don't give away my secrets!) He can search through memories and thoughts to look for something specific.

However this is a purely consensual ability. Mac has to have permission to go into someone's mind and look around from an ethical standpoint. Mind walking also requires continual physical contact. If one breaks away the link is broken too and results in a slightly painful jilt back to reality for both parties.

The dark side of this power comes up in the fact that it is possible for Mac to force himself unwillingly upon someone's mind. This requires physical contact as well but it's not so difficult to grab someone forcefully or hold them down, not if you're determined. Forcing into someone's mind invades privacy but it is also painful to the victim and may result in a loss of consciousness. This is what some have referred to as "mental rape" since it is forcing the way into a person's private recesses without consent.

Mac views it in exactly this way. He loathes the very thought of it. When younger and flashes of powers to come came upon him he worked his way into a girl at school's mind, just briefly, to see what she was thinking. She was soon in tears and Mac couldn't understand. Upon returning home he had a very harsh lesson in exactly why this was so wrong and how he must never do it again.

He took this very seriously and to heart and has not done it since but the experience still lurks in the back of his mind. If the circumstances were desperate would he do it again? What if it was a really bad person? Is it still so horrible? And the more worrying question, could anger push him across that line so firmly ingrained in his mind? The thought that he might oneday go too far and step across the boundary is unsettling to Mac, not that he would ever admit this. Still it's always there and always a temptation to resist.

History: in progress

Mackenzie Sr. had cared about his work as an X-men but his wife's apparent suicide sent him for a loop and the man re-evaluated his life. Some might have begun to spend more time with their remaining family, in this case Mac, but Mackenzie Sr. had never been a typical man. Instead he lost whatever faith he had possessed and tasks began to seem meaningless. He had done good through his years and been repaid with a tense relationship with his only son and the death of his unhappy wife. Without warning Mackenzie began to secretly pass messages to the Brotherhood. At first they were little details but after a month he had made a decision and he switched sides permanently.

At first the X-men thought him missing but then they found the evidence of messages passed, of betrayal. Unfortunately in the act of trying to protect the son no one thought to tell him. A school of people with mutant powers including super-hearing made for easy gossip and the truth about Mackenzie Sr.'s betrayal of his teammates spread quickly. It spread to Mac. At first he was in denial but a confrontation with a former teammate of his dad's made it obvious that the rumours had not been greatly exaggerated.

Mac took it hard, not just because his father had betrayed the X-men but because he had taken off and done it without leaving so much as a note, leaving Mac to hear it secondhand off of a school gossip.

Mac had always made it hard for others to get along with him. His cocky exterior and smart alek remarks had made that possible years ago. With evidence against his father many people turned on him quickly, including people he had called friends. For a young man suddenly without a father this was a devestating blow. Now he was treated as a traitor himself, the sins of the father he supposed, and he hadn't been well liked to begin with.

He was quickly ushered in to see a psychiatrist for the second time in his young life and just as quickly he made sure he no longer had to go for sessions. At first he would just stare across the couch for the full hour, the next time he attempted to analyze the psychiatrist and they gave up on him.

Strangely in the aftermath of all of this Mac did manage to hold onto the relationship he had been involved in at the time for awhile. Her name was Rebecca, though she went by Becky, and she was a solid prescence in his life. She was just what he needed and he pushed her away. She dealt with the initial taunts from new enemies and she dealt with Mac's explosions of temper but time passed and things didn't get better and he didn't move on.

"How do you move on when your father joins the freaking brotherhood and your mother O.D.s?" he had asked her rhetorically once. The answer for Mac seemed to be that you didn't.

Mac had been on a school team for nearly a year at this point and previously he had shown himself to be focused and determined. Now he flew apart. He no longer cared about his teammates and he no longer seemed to care about himself and put both parties in danger due to reckless actions on his part. This disregard for safety and the rules wasn't acceptable and Mac was removed from his team.

It was shortly after the removal from his team that Becky broke up with Mac. She had hoped he would move towards being okay oneday but he obviously wasn't and she thought he needed to talk through his issues. She left and he was heartbroken. The problem with dating with your school is that you have to see these people everyday. Becky skillfully tried to avoid him and when they were in the same room she avoided eye contact like the slightest glance would infect her. Mac fell further.

What followed was a series of flings, some with students but others with waitresses in town. It was never about any emotional attachment and these entanglements had all the depth of a puddle yet Mac kept them up.

Because he was only seventeen Mac was technically under the care of a legal guardian, Xavier's institute filling in for his father's extended absence. This meant he lacked the freedom to go where he wanted and the possible option of emancipation was not carried out due to Mac's irresponsible behaviour following his father's switch of sides.

...

Personality:

Mac is a strange blend of dark pessimism and childlike innocence. The key to understanding him lies in understanding that he feels he has been abandonned by everyone important in his life. Mostly he blames those who leave him but a nagging voice in the back of his head has always feared that it's not them he has to blame but himself.

His sense of humour is described in a word, 'black'. In the past it has been described as the dark side of sarcasm, humour that could sometimes be seen as tasteless. Mac tends towards smart alek comments since they tend to keep people at a measured distance.

Mac is a pessimist yet a dreamer. He believes the world is out to get him and that everything will go wrong, or at least this is what he tells anyone who asks, yet he wants to believe in the best of the world. He has enough childlike hope within him to be disappointed when the world proves bleak. In essence he wants to believe but knows from experience to expect the worst.

While a pitious figure in the eyes of any who know his full story, he hates pity and tries not to tell people the whole truth and nothing but the truth... Although inwardly rather shy and with low self-confidence he overcompensates by being obnoxious and cocky. He can be sweet and sensitive and when in a relationship he is completely faithful always. He may notice other girls but he would never actually betray a current flame and he is easily broken if he finds out that a girl has been unfaithful to him. Due to poor past experience Mac is cautious about forging new relationships.

Mac's parental issues run deep but he drives away any shrinks that are sent his way. However a telepath willing to deal with him might be able to make more progress.

Since his father's treacherous turn Mac has been treated as a traitor by much of the school's population and has been made an outcast. Mac tends to pretend he doesn't care and makes it worse by purposely driving people away and acting up.

In academics he's intelligent enough but often doesn't apply himself unless he feels like it. More often he's content to make remarks under his breath to himself during a lesson and were he in grade school he would be cast out into the hall. When he finds something he's passionate about which, for the apathetic teenager isn't often, he goes at it with devotion and of a one-track mind.

Mac has a short temper and is liable to jump to conclusions, often ones involving physical violence, quickly if taunted or stirred up in just the right way and this means he is not well-liked by adults either and is viewed as a bad influence. He will fight for what he believes in and for those he cares about but will just as easily turn around and begin a battle if he is done wrong.

Likes:

Girls ~ Mac has a bit of an eye for the ladies and he looks and he flirts but girls may feel he's being hot and cold as he seems interested but shies away as soon as anything approaches seriousness or committment.

Leaving People Speechless ~ If there's one thing Mac loves it's making sure people have absolutely nothing to say after a conversation with him. He prides himself on being able to make the talkative speechless.

Food ~ It's still a bit of a mystery how he can eat so much junk food and food in general and never put a pound on his slim frame. Girls envy him this.

The Water ~ Everyone needs somewhere quiet to go, just to sit and think. For Mac this place is by the water. He feels comfortable and relaxed there and would happily spend the rest of his days by a beach if it were possible. He's one of those people who just feels happier when close to water.

Dislikes:

Family ~ For the most part Mac has issues with his family. His dad always put him second and thought of him as "the boy" rather than as his son and a part of Mac wishes he had this father-son relationship. He resents his mother for killing herself and he's scared of his cousin Patty.

Telepaths ~ Mac might like his own powers but he doesn't like having the tables turned and has never felt comfortable around telepaths or any who can go into his mind in someway. He can generally feel a probing of his thoughts and always rounds angrily on those he can feel poking around in his thoughts. Perhaps this is why he tries to not wander in other people's thoughts or even bring on reliving a memory without first asking permission. Tries.
