Most common mundane causes of ghost phenomena
House settling: all houses settle especially at night as they cool down. THis can cause a variety of creakiings that can sound like knocking or footsteps.
Mice in the walls/attic: Scurrying can sound like footsteps or whispering.
The wind: Can cuase a variety of remarkably human sounds, including screaming and moaning.
Residence: There are many cases of tenants faking hauntings to get moved to a better house or simply for amusement.
Darkness: Most ghost sightings happen at night. In the darkness innocent objects like a coat on a chair are easily mistaken for something else.
Faulty electrics: Old or faulty wiring can make lights and appliances turn on and off.
Plumbing: Dripping taps can sound like tapping or knocking bad plumbing can also cause knocking and banging.
Ventilation: Air passages can carry voices and sound over long distances.
Old boilers/ furnaces: Can cause strange roarings rumblings and groans and also odd smells.
Poor insulation: Can cause drafts and cold spots.
Most of this is common sence knowledge but just something for others who are just getting started.

Thank you for the awesome info Jenn!
We lived in a house once where everytime it was windy, a window upstairs would "moan." I knew it was just the wind causing this, but it still freaked me out. However, one time the "moan" was two-pitched!

That must of been freaky . My las vegas home is the same way, we get terrible wind storms and the wind coming threw the windows is spooky sounding.

Great information Jenn!!!! It took me a few years to really be aware of the different noises in this house I live in. I have paid very close attention to that, to rule out what could be making specific noises. Some of these points have given me some more to think about. Thanks Jenn.
