Mufflers
I am completing my conversion to a 12A mazda and was wondering what kind of exhaust systems are being used? I have the header built and a 5 inch supertrapp but am wondering if it will be quiet enough not to get complaints. Is anyone running just this type of setup or are there better systems available that are not super costly, as I said I am near the end of the conversion and (no surprise) it has run over budget :) Any advise or information would be great. Thanks

Re: Mufflers
You might try contacting Pete Weber at Weber Performance Exhaust. He's in the California bay area at 510-794-7748. His Phase 9 muffler is is quiet and has minimal horsepower-robbing backpressure. I think the cost is $250 - $300.

I don't have any direct experience with rotaries using these mufflers, but I expect they would work well.

Good Luck!

Mazda Mufflers
Full Race Rotaries are very difficult to quiet down with out affecting HP. The "standard" system developed by Ben Beasley and Daryl Drummond is to come out of the exhaust header with 2 1/2 in pipe go thru a SS trumpet about 18 inches long expanding to 3 1/2 inches and then thru a Special Borla muffler available from Mazda Comp and then thru a second Borla or a 5 1/2 inch Super Trapp. The Borlas are about $200 and will last about 4 races the Super trapp needs to be repacked every two races. There is a new mufflier ...big canister full of lava rock run by Jacik Mucha that is a single muffler solution. I believe it comes from a company named Hi Tech. A single Super trap will not keep you below the 103 dB level. Good Luck the Mazdas are great. Remember the rules changesd this year on carb chokes from 36 mm to 34 mm.

mufflers
Thanks Jim, I fired the car up two days ago and as my Boss said, If I can hear it out side the shop on the far side, next to the street, it is not going to pass :) I love the sound of the rotary, and the reliability is well known, this motor came out of my (super)production car, and is very well proven (it is faster than me :) )

The biggest problem I have is room for exhaust pieces, the Hawke FF that has been converted to this CSR does not have very much room. The body does not extend more than six inches behind the rear tires.

I need to find something less than a foot long to add into the system. as the crossover fromm side to side is not very wide. I repacked my 5"SS supertrapp and as you have said it is not going to be under 103db.

How long is the " lava rock" muffler? and does Borla, or anyone else, make one that short? I have been looking but have not found anything so far. I live in Idahoo and race cars are foriegn objects here ( roundy rounders are racers and the rest of us do not exhist).

Any help I can get I greatly appreciate. Thanks

Re: mufflers
Give Coast Fabrication a call @ 714-842-2603 or www.coastfab.com.. Very light weight, small and they have a metal packing material.

Good luck,

Jay
