On the road to recovery....
She managed to get a couple of hours of sleep while Riley was there, her body seemed to relax more when he was around, though she still had unpleasant dreams and her sleep left her feeling unrefreshed when she did wake up. It was dark outside and somewhere a mournful owl hooted and another replied, the sound could only just be heard over the sound of the beeping machines that she was hooked up to.
There was a faint groan from the girl on the bed as she awoke to the pain she'd been relived of for a couple of hours. Why couldn't she just stay asleep for ever? It didn't hurt then, her eyes flicked open, realising that someone had placed the oxygen mask back onto her again. It felt uncomfortable, she blinked her eyes a little more. There were people around the bed, her eyes struggled to focus in on them, they seemed to be talking to one another in hushed voices. Her gaze lingered upon Riley’s mum and then moved off to Riley , staying fixed on him while she struggled to get her eyes to stay open properly. There was a small smile on her lips even though it was hard to see with her mask on. Her free hand lifted to pull the mask free, disrupting the way her straight hair had been splayed out over the bed.
‘Hey.’ Her eyes were still on Riley but slowly they drifted off to look at the others in the room. There were still dark bags under her eyes that betrayed how tired and sick she was, but time would remove them and soon they’d give her some sleeping pills to make it easier for her to get to sleep at night until the pain receded. She wanted to just cry and throw her arms around Riley’s neck and hold him until she felt better again. But she couldn’t because his family were there and she didn’t feel comfortable enough to do that around them. She looked at the others rather shyly, aware that they’d all stopped talking to look at her, her eyes moved to look at the machines that were monitoring a slight increase in her heart rate. She hoped she hadn’t been asleep too long, it would be ages and ages before Riley could come and see her again and she’d have absolutely nothing to do but lye here in pain and wait for him to come with no idea of the time.

The family whispered quietly between each other, mostly Riley had ignored them, completely unaware of the topics they were on, his eyes often just watching Catherine with little interest as to what else was happening around him. There was a moment in which his eyes wandered off to stare rather distantly at her stomach, it just so happened that's when she woke and her voice pulled him back from his muddled thoughts.
"Hey..." He smiled a little nervously since everyone was silent and he felt really shy around them still, casting his parents an awkward look, he then shifted over to stand closer next to her bed. "..I missed you." Looking a little timid by the audience they had, Riley still managed to bend down, lightly pressing his lips against her smooth forehead before standing up again, his nervous smile still seen.
"We just wanted to see you Catherine," Martha sounded worried still, her all their expressions pleased yet looking as if they'd be just as happy for her to get out of here. "We have this for you," She added a little cheerily as she flashed her motherly smile and placed down the digital camera they were given for Christmas on her side table beside the cup that she used to drink from. Riley stared down at it rather eagerly, longing to see Catherine look much happier then she has been since coming here.
"We're going to be outside now, we can't wait for you to get better, cheers Catherine," They didn't bring any of the Kids, not wanting to remind Catherine of what she lost, and Emily was sulking back home since they couldn't leave the puppies on their own and Emily thought Catherine might enjoy the adults visiting her now, she was staying at the farm so she could always drop by Cat's room, besides, Jonathon promised to try and take her to the hospital next time Riley wants to come down. Riley only half turned his attention over towards them as they all smiled and moved around to her otherside to either place a light hand on her arm or, in Martha and Ammie's cases, lean over and give quick friendly kisses on her forehead.
Riley was preoccupying himself while they 'hogged' Catherine's attention by fiddling with the ends of her hair, he missed holding her, it felt so horrible that she was hurting and he couldn't even do something as simple as hold her.. Once the others made their way out, Riley flashed Catherine his own little smile, more pleased in a selfish way that all her attention was his again.
"Feeling any better?" Sounding a little hopeful, yet looking rather tired himself, Riley wondered if there was a chance she had gotten better from her rest, even though she didn't look it, then she might be home sooner.. he missed her so much, he just wanted her home again.

Re: On the road to recovery...."Hey..." She responsed to his greeting be her own little smile. It felt horribly akward to have all his family here like this, and they'd been watching her while she was asleep. How long had they been here for? Embaressed she glanced at them quickly before concentrating on Riley she didn't want everyone to make a fuss, but then she didn't know half of what had happened to her. "..I missed you." That made her wonder how long she'd been asleep, what if she'd been asleep all day? But she didn't feel like she'd been out for that long.
"We just wanted to see you Catherine," Her eyes nervously moved over to look at Martha. She felt embaressed to see her again, it was an awful feeling, she'd come here and they'd taken her into their family and now she was putting them through something like this. She wanted to apologise but how could you say sorry for something like this, could she even apologise? She wasn't sure she'd done anything wrong yet she still wanted to say sorry, this was all they needed at New Year. "We have this for you," If Cat had looked harder she might have realised that there was something strange about their behaviour, like they knew something she didn't but as it was there were more important things on her mind. She smiled at Martha as she placed their video camera on the table next to Car's bed. She wondered for a moment why she'd put it there but then she remembered what Riley had said about them filming the puppies.
"We're going to be outside now, we can't wait for you to get better, cheers Catherine," It suddenly seemed as if she was surrounded by people, all reaching in to kiss her or touch her. It felt nice, but rather stifeling at the same time. She wasn't used to people acting like this around her and she was a little dissapointed when they left.
"Feeling any better?" She nodded in response, in reality though she didn't feel any different really but she knew it would cheer Riley up to hear she was doing better. She wanted the doctor to come in and see her so she could ask how long it would be untill she could get out of here.
'Can I see the puppies?' It didn't seem fair that Heather had chosen the night she got shot to hav eher puppies, they'd probably be walking by the time she was well enough to be taken back to the farm. Her eyes looked over at the camera rather eagerly. 'Ummm Riley .... where's my bag with all my things?' Her phone was in there and so was her wallet even though she didn't have more than a few cents in there. It felt horrible to be in hospital, she didn't have anything that belonged to her in here, not even her own clothes, she had to wear a horrible green gown they'd issued her.

Re: On the road to recovery....'Can I see the puppies?' Riley grinned a little and picked up the camera, fiddling around with it while she continued speaking a moment later. 'Ummm Riley .... where's my bag with all my things?' Looking up from the camera as he was rewinding it right to the start, he looked a little unsure for a short space of time until he remembered.
"Oh, yeah, sorry.. uh, I think.. I mean Penny, she gave them to mum," He sounded a little jumbled up, mainly because he hasn't slept much and he wasn't paying any attention to those sort of details, all he wanted was for Catherine to get better. He offered a bright grin as he shifted closer to her, puling the seat right up beside her so he could hold the camera for her to see the pictures.
'Oh that's a wonderful idea Riley,'
The sound was a little quiet, but still easily able to make out the words, Riley didn't want it too loud incase it made problems for the nurses who wanted to hear Catherine's beeping machine. The image of Riley's mother faded into view while the camera automatically reajusted the focus and lighting.
'She was really looking forward to this..'
Riley had his sulky tone on, as if he was grumpy Heather had the puppies while Catherine was in a hospital, Emily popped into view and waved, grinned brightly as she called out 'Hey Catherine!' Her wavy orange red hair bouncing about her shoulders as she darted out of view again, Riley had put the camera on the the table in the family room, it was also on a stand which had an inferred beam which followed the movement of whatever was in its path, so if someone walked right by the camera would follow the person who caught its attention. Riley had a small remote which had a button to lock it in position or unlock, record, pause and zoom in and or out, Riley had it focused on the puppies, all huddled about Heather's stomach, all struggling amongst each other except one which kept its tiny body still as if it was asleep.
'Catherine, this one is ours.'
Riley made his way into view, pointing to the tiny neglected puppy that didn't have the strength to fight for her milk, she was going to be pure black except for her feet, the tip of her tail and the front of her chest which will have white, but right now she was like a tiny little rat, her fur barely there and her eyes shut, like all the other puppies.
'She's faking to be sick, that way she hopes to be able to go to the hospital and spend time with you.'
Toby could be heard in the background running around barking excitedly, and even though Riley sounded as if he was trying to be cheery, he didn't look very well, suffering from the stress of Catherine's ordeal.
"She's looking much better now.. well.. she's doing better, still needs time but with the proper attention the vet says she'll be fine." Riley had this proudness about him when he spoke, he could give Katie attention, between Catherine and him they could shower her with attention, they'll make sure Katie lives long and haves a wonderful life.

"Oh, yeah, sorry.. uh, I think.. I mean Penny, she gave them to mum," Her eyes moved over towards the camera, looking at the small screen he was holding up. She realxed slightly knowing that her things were alright. Riley sounded a little distracted as he looked at the camera, fiddling around with the buttons to make a picture appear on the small rectangular screen. Her eyes eagerly looked at the camera, she wanted to see the puppies.
'Oh that's a wonderful idea Riley,' She watched as Riley's mother faded into view on the screen. 'She was really looking forward to this..' She heard Riley reply to Martha, she couldn't see him since he was setting up the camera. There was a slight smile upon her lips as she saw Emily pop into view on the screen, waving before she scampered off. She watched, looking almsot delighted as she camera zoomed in on Heather, showing up the seven small shapes that were huddled around her, all but one which was lying a little off from the others. 'Catherine, this one is ours.' It looked so impossibly tiny, it's eyes closed tightly, Riley came into view and indicated which puppy was theirs. From this distance it didn't even look like it was breathing. 'She's faking to be sick, that way she hopes to be able to go to the hospital and spend time with you.' There was a little smile on Cat's face even though she knew that the little thing actually wasn't doing too well. She was afraid to ask Riley what her chances were in case they weren't good.
"She's looking much better now.. well.. she's doing better, still needs time but with the proper attention the vet says she'll be fine." Cat tore her eyes away from the screen which was filled with the mass of black puppies and their mother.
'She looks lovley.' Her gaze wandered back to look at the camera once again, she didn't think she could get tired of watching them. They all looked so cute, it made her wonder what it would be like when she was a mother. 'What are the rest of them called?'

Re: On the road to recovery....'She looks lovley.' With an agreeing smile as Riley's reply, he glanced over towards Catherine and then back at the camera. 'What are the rest of them called?' Riley's smile faded as he looked back towards Catherine, giving a light shrug of his shoulders before he spoke.
"We aren't allowed to name them, in eight weeks they're off to their families, but mum is going to ask for what they intend on calling the puppies so we know what to call them," He thought for a moment before adding, "Emily's one is called Treasure, it's a girl," There was a feeling of painful jealousy again, it didn't seem fair, Heather had her puppies, all seven, Riley couldn't even have one child. He had been so looking forward to the baby, to being a father, he would have been terrified at first to hold her but soon enough once he does it would have been impossible for him to put her down.
If anything, Riley would have been more passionate with Catherine in the romantic sense, after all, the more times he makes love to her the more chances of creating another child. But he only recently really learned of her hate for the baby, so maybe it was for the best, maybe it would have been wrong to bring a child into the world if Catherine wasn't ready. He didn't really realize that she would have had difficulty sharing his attention with the child, he didn't know that it would take time for her to get used to the baby, he always figured mothers had a natural ability for all that.

She was a little dissapointed though, she'd hoped that perhaps if they didn't have names already she might have been allowed to name one. She wanted to get out of here, and she wanted to go back to the farm to see the puppies with the others. It wasn't fair that they were going to leave her alone again, she didn't like it in here, couldn’t Riley just carry her out of here? The heart machine sped up slightly at the thought of both being in such close proximity to him as well as the idea of going home.
There was a silence in the room, broken only by the beeping of the machines she was hooked up to. She wasn't sure what to say to Riley, she wanted to scream and shout and cry because it wasn't fair that this had happened to her, but it wouldn't change anything even if she did. Her expression became more withdrawn, keeping her eyes trained on the window as she searched for something to tell or ask Riley.
'Umm did the nurses say how long it would be before I can go home?' There was another little pause in which her eyes moved over towards the door. One of her hands mesed with her blankets, rubbing her fingers over the material and ignoring the pain in her stomach. 'Can I have some chocolate?' She wasn't holding out great hopes that she'd be allowed since they hadn't fed her anything yet and she'd been lying here for ages. She felt hungry but sick at the same time. She knew she might be able to persuade Riley to get her some if he didn't know she hadn't been eating.

When he looked back at Catherine as the tape started to end, he lost his smile as he noticed she appeared down about something again. Couldn't she just look at the puppies and forget about everything else until she was better?
'Umm did the nurses say how long it would be before I can go home?' He hadn't asked really.. they just kept saying 'when she gets better' or 'give her time' but he was sure Penny might know by now, he was just afraid to ask.. what if she said a while? 'Can I have some chocolate?' Busying himself with shutting off the camera, Riley looked up at her a little down hearted, he didn't like being asked questions and especially if he didn't know the answer and even more so if he wasn't allowed to tell her even if he did know.
"I'll.." There was a machine in the hall that was for coffee and hot chocolates and tea, but it occured to Riley she might not be allowed something like that, so instead of saying he'll get her one he quickly decided against it. "..ask the nurses." It was one answer for both her questions, he pulled their camera nervously onto his lap and stared down at it.
"I'll go ask now then," Standing up, he left the camera on his seat and made his way out of the room, looking a little miserable, he just wanted her back home in her bed where he didn't have to ask permission for giving her a hot chocolate!
"Excuse me.. Catherine is asking when she can go home.. and if she may have a hot chocolate." He was so tired, he just wanted to curl up next to her and sleep quietly in her arms. Riley didn't even look at whoever he was talking to, his parents were down the end of the hall talking with Penny who was giving them some medication for Catherine in advanced so they could get ready and didn't have to buy everything all at once. Riley didn't realizing they were paying for something, he's been pouncing on all the medical bills and refusing to allow anyone else to pay for anything, they were amazed he was able to afford everything, Martha's panicking he's spending all his money and going to have trouble living after all this.
