Paralysis
Name: Nina Shields
Nickname: Nin, Neen.
Code Name: Paralysis
Affiliation: The Brotherhood.
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Birthday: 21/09/1989
Hair: Elbow length, and a glossy Black in colour.
Eyes: Grey.
Mother: Gina Shields
Father: Thomas Shields

Physical Description: Although she is considered quite beautiful to look upon (having delicate facial features and porcelain skin), Nina is quite slender, often appearing waif-like and fragile.

Her dark hair is nearly always worn out, and is glossy and full.

Powers: Nina has the ability to produce mass amounts of a paralysing toxin, which are held within a second set of veins that are wrapped around her original veins.
These veins are throughout her entire body, and excrete the toxin out of her body through the pores on her hands (or the pores on any part of her body).

This toxin is incredibly potent, and if the victim is subjected to lethal amounts, they can fall into permanent comatose.

Once excreted, the toxin can be thrown at an enemy, or transferred via physical contact. Nina can also harden the toxin to a strong shell like density, which she can wear over her body as armour, or use to wrap people in a paralysing cacoon.

Weaknesses: Although immune to her own poison, this is only under special circumstances. Nina is only immune to her poison on the proviso that it doesn’t enter her blood stream.

If she is wearing her poison shell as armour, she can re-liquefy it and it is drawn back through the pores into her 2nd vein.

History:
Nina was born in New York City in the year 1989, to Thomas and Gina Shields.

As both her parents were research Scientists, her upbringing was left to her Aunt Miluda, while her parents furthered their career.

Her life was uneventful, though she showed great academic talents from an early age, and was placed in a private school to hone her intellectual flair. Pleased that their daughter was doing well, their pleasantries meant little to Nina, as she was often lonely. Even her Aunt Miluda had her own business to run, leaving Nina to her own devices.

It was on her 10th birthday when Nina’s life took an unexpected turn. 2 months earlier some older girls had bullied her at her school. Although Nina was (for the most part) a strong, confident child, the teasing soon became incessant. Eventually, it wore Nina down, and caused her unhappiness and stress. Not long after, she began getting pains all over her body, a squeezing, searing pain that only added to the stress she was currently under.

Trying her best to ignore it both the physical and emotional pain, it simply didn’t work. The bullying continued. One girl in particular, Samantha Davies, had now begun to physical bully little Nina. One afternoon at school, she picked a fight with Nina, calling her names and pushing her around. When Nina refused to fight back, Samantha became aggravated and pushed Nina violently into some thorny bushes.

Crying with frustration and pain, Nina felt herself being pulled up and out of the bushes by Samantha, who lifted her up to her own height in an effort to intimidate her. Lashing out, Nina grabbed Samantha’s cheeks in an effort to cause her pain so that she would drop Nina to the ground. However, it didn’t work out exactly as planned…

Nina felt that all too familiar searing pain through her body, and felt a warm liquid appear in her palms. Scared stiff, she watched as Samantha’s eyes grew confused, and her face slackened. Moments later, she crumpled in a limp, seemingly lifeless heap to the ground, Nina falling on top of her.

Panicking, Nina screamed until a teacher ran over to help. Crying hysterically, Nina was certain she had killed Samantha. It took her Aunt Miluda and both her parents to come down to the school and calm her down.

Later, it was discovered that Samantha had a high level of toxicity in her body. It was of unusual composition, and had forced all of Samantha’s body to shut down to comatose.

Distraught, Samantha’s parents filed a lawsuit against the Shield family. However, there was little evidence to suggest that Nina was responsible. Indeed, it looked very one sided when the issue of Samantha’s bullying arose in court.

Medical records proved that Nina was sound, and devoid of the X-gene that had been responsible for the recent ‘mutant phenomena’. It was on this basis that the case was dismissed.

Miluda was relieved that her niece was in the clear. However, as she went to take Nina home with her, Gina and Thomas insisted that they would be caring for Nina from this point on. Adamant that she would be the better guardian, Miluda could do very little, as she was not legally Nina’s guardian.

The ordeal up to this point had left Nina very confused and as a result she became somewhat of a recluse. She went with her parents without any complaints, unsure of what to say in regards to such a matter.

Eventually, it would be revealed to Nina that the test results given to the court were fake, and that Nina did indeed have the X-gene within her. As it was a clash of interests, her parents were not allowed to conduct the tests on their daughter, and thus the family doctor did so.

However, upon finding out the nature of their daughter’s mutation, they bribed the doctor with a substantial amount of money to fudge the results and hand them into court.

It worked like a charm, but this new revelation became a spark of interest for Nina’s parents. She would be the perfect asset to a new research product that would be based around mutation and the X-gene. And for the next 5 years of her life, she would be subjected to tests, training and research.

As a safety precaution, her parents kept her within their lab. Although she had her own private room, with all the necessities, Nina suffered greatly from a lack of love, companionship and social interaction.

Eventually, Nina’s parents both decided that she had a sufficient amount of control over her powers, and sent her to interact with the outside world as a new test.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out quite so well. Years of being shut off from the world caused Nina to grow bitter and angry. She lashed out at both parents and paralysed them. Taking the bare necessities, she ran away from the lab, her parents and her hometown, choosing instead to live on the streets. For 2 years she lived off the bare essentials, using her mutation to rob people of necessary cash. Yet it all came to a halt one afternoon when she tried to rob a young man. Using her abilities to paralyse him, she realised in shock that it didn’t work.
He was mutant. And not knowing that his mutation was invulnerability, Nina did not realise that he would be completely invulnerable to her attack. Grabbing her wrist, he held her to the spot. Unable to escape, she was exposed, and thrown in a prison cell for the night.

Frustrated, she was surprised to find that someone had paid her bail. Suspicious at first, she could only assume that it was her parents, and that they had finally found her after 2 years.

Once let out, she was given an envelope (along with a reproachful look) from the Police Officer who had been assigned to her cell. Enquiring about the envelope, he told her that the man who had paid her bail had left it for her.

Curiously, she opened it up and read the following sentences.

‘We have need of you.

If you wish to be safe from those who would harm you, come to the Brotherhood Boarding House.

We’ll be waiting for you.’

Confused, Nina nevertheless decided to take a chance, and used the last of her money to travel to the address assigned on the back of the letter.

This would be a new chapter in her life.

Personality:
Growing up for Nina was quite lonely, and as a result she is somewhat of a recluse. While years of being shut off from the world have caused Nina to grow bitter and angry. And yet, the last 2 years of her life have been hard, and have refined her character into someone more mature and even minded.

While Nina is still very introverted, she is also determined, extremely confident, stubborn and hotheaded. She will not think twice about telling people what her thoughts on a matter are, and while it is hard for her to make friends, when she does, she’s a loyal friend for the rest of her life.

When she knows she can trust a person unconditionally, she becomes much more easygoing and carefree. However this occurrence is fairly rare due to the amount of people in her life who have used her for their own selfish ends.

Likes:
Nina loves the academic arts. She loves writing, reading and Art, and is exceptionally talented at all three.

She also has a fondness for animals and plants, and can often be found tending to flowers and plants in ill-gotten, ruined gardens.

Dislikes:
Nina’s main dislike concerns doctors. She feels there is no need to see a doctor who may just turn her over to a group of anti-mutant terrorists, or one who will try to keep her for ‘tests’.

Sample Post:

“Hello? Anyone home?” Nina dropped her duffel bag on the porch and banged on the door impatiently. This was the address, right?

Thrusting her slender hand into her back pocket, she pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. Opening it up, she skimmed the contents briefly and turned it around, re-reading the address.

Yes, this was it. The Brotherhood Boarding house.

Rapping on the door once more, she chose to take a step back and survey what would hopefully be her new lodgings for the night.

What she saw was less than impressive. The house itself was quite large, but run-down and most likely hazardous.

The windows were cracked and covered in grime, the paint on the outside of the house was peeling away, and the weeds had overtaken what she presumed was a garden, a long time ago.

Even the door in front of her looked as though it would fall off its hinges at any God-given moment.

Well I’ve seen worse. MUCH worse. She mused, thinking back on the last 2 years of her life.

Let’s hope this place will prove to be more permanent than my previous places of residence.

With that thought in mind, she stepped forward to knock on the door once more, and waited…

Re: Paralysis
Hello!

First of all good on ya for saving the bio, I sometimes don't and when ezboard screws up it's a good thing to have.

Anyway I'm just going to give you a quick few points here, I trust Angie, Matt, Ann or another of the adminny types shall give this a more indepth runover.

First of all the powers are not terribly original. They aren't on the banned list, which is good, but they're remarkably close to the poison and antidote powers by my character Victoria Fitzbruin who is also a member of the Brotherhood. Two characters with such similar powers on the same side (and our brotherhood is fairly small currently) isn't the best of ideas so you might want to tweak those a bit. I do like the toxin hardening to a shell idea, maybe you could work with that a little?

Since our RPG is set in the future, the current year is 2024. So if your character is 17 then she hasn't been born in 1989.

The physical description could use some fleshing out. How does she move for example? What does her voice sound like? What kinds of clothes does she wear?

The sample post is also very short. I don't mean to scare you off but we're a skilled RPG and try to aim for around 400 words or more with each post. Many of our posters write lengthier replies with a great amount of detail and eloquent language. Fleshing it out as well and showing more depth of writing and character is a good idea.

That's just briefly but hopefully a few things that will help you to work on and expand this bio. Any of us are happy to help if you want to contact us.

Just a few suggestions there because at the moment the bio needs some fleshing out in order to be accepted.

That said welcome to NE :D
