Flight report August 2002
Summary: this month I concluded my type-rating on the 747-400 at Frankfurt. The course consisted in 30 lessons, covering issues on aircraft flying, systems and failures handling. The last two flights were normal scheduled flights, so I recorded the time flown. Then, I went back to Hawaii, to resume regular flying, but continued to train on emergencies.
HI 185, panoramic flight around Ohau in a Piper Malibu Mirage plane, FLY! simulator, 42 minutes. A good look at the islands after extensive training in Frankfurt.
HI 14 Honolulu Kona, 747-400 PS1 simulator, FL190, 15432lbs fuel burned, 37 minutes.
Fire APU during take-off: extinguished fire and continued flight; hydraulic system 3 failure during cruise, lost autopilot L: manual ILS landing at max crosswind allowed (25 kts).
HI 95 Kona Lihue, 747-400, PS1 simulator, FL 220, 18739lbs fuel burned, 45 minutes.
No problems this time.
HI 87 Lihue Honolulu, 747-400, PS1 simulator, FL 110, 11023lbs fuel burned, 29 minutes.
APU failure before start-up: continued engine start wiht external electrical power; hydraulic systems 2 and 3 failure on take-off: lost autopilots L and R, stab trim, spoilers. Managed the flight with LNAV and autothrottle, controlling altitude manually, manual ILS landing (no autoland with just one autopilot operative).

Left Kahului at 10:30 AM HST. VFR flight. Departed using published pattern and then turned right using noise abatement route for Paia. Crossed Keanae and then headed due east. Landed at Hana Airport at 10:44 AM

Left Hana at 11:00am HST and flew outbound due east. Turned south then south-east and followed thge coastline until reaching Makena Point Visual Fix Point. Flew along the South Maui skyline and then turned north at the KNUI towers. Used the published Smokestack visual approach and landed at Kahului OGG Runway 02. A little windy but otherwise fine.
