FR MARCH 2004
Bruno Glaviano
Flight report March 2004

HI 185 PHNL Ohau tour PHNL; Piper Seneca V X-Plane; FL30, 97NM; 40 min
(real) weather deteriorated during this panoramic flight, and ended up with heavy rain, winds and turbulence: a good training for the pilot, but a rough ride for passengers! Sorry

HI 84 PHNL PHLI; Airbus A320-100; FL200; 104NM; 23 min
Uneventful link flight between the islands.

HI 190 PHLI Niihau PHLI; King-Air; FL40; 150NM; 42 min.
Visibility was good for this excursion flight, and I was able to counter the strong winds. To find the elusive Niihau island, I flew IFR and circled around it, but it is not present in my X-Plane scenery, so I couldn’t see it. I then flew back along V16 to SOK VOR, called ATC and followed it’s vectors for an ILS catch at runway 35.

HI 189 PHLI Port Allen Waimea Princeville; DHC-6 Twin-Otter; FL50; 49NM; 25min.
I leased from Scenic this plane, with it’s wide and flat windows to allow passengers a good view during this panoramic flight (I flew for real in this plane in 1988 over the Grand Canyon). After flying in the narrows of the canyon and reaching the ocean over Na Pali coast, engine #2 quit, and I did a single-engine emergengy landing on the narrow runway at Princeville (firts time in X-Plane). All went well, except for a big scare for the passengers, watching the thick cloud of smoke across the big windows.

HI 188 Princeville Na Pali coast PHLI; DHC-6 Twin-Otter; FL30; 72NM; 32 min.
The plane was repaired, and I started this other panoramic flight from Princeville, flying back and forth along the coast, to show it equally to passengers on both sides; then, I finally came back to Lihue.

HI 87 PHLI PHNL; Airbus A320-100; FL190; 94NM; 25min.
Uneventful evening flight back to hub.

Chartered sight-seeing bay area tour to/fr KSFO; A/C Cessna 310; Fight Gear simulator; FL30; 27 min
I downloaded and installed Flight Gear, a free, open flight simulator software. First impression is positive, so I flew this familiarisation flight; then went back to Hawaii to resume inter-island flight.

HI 50 PHNL PHMK; Cessna 310 Flight Gear; FL 30; 20 min
PHMK PHNY; Cessna 310 Flight Gear; FL 30; 20 min
HI 103 PHNY PHOG; Cessna 310 Flight Gear; FL 30; 15 min
HI 102 PHOG PHNY; Cessna 310 Flight Gear; FL 30; 24 min

HI 183 PHOG PHMU; King-Air X-Plane; FL50; 109NM; 31 min
Sight-seeing tour with Kahoolawe overflight; then headed for Waimea in IFR. Ceiling was low during approach and I was considering a diversion to Kona, when at least I saw the runway between the clouds, and managed to land safely. A good practice of finding the destination without a GPS.

PHMU PHKO; Cessna 310 Flight Gear; FL 30; 12 min
Repositioning flight to Kona

HI 15 PHKO PHNL; Airbus A320-100 X-Plane; FL220; 170NM; 40min.
Routine flight, back to hub for some rest.

Total flights: 14; total time 6 hours 9 minutes.

I use the Microsoft Flight simulator 2004 always with the real weather conditions.
I never used the auto-landing. In fact I don't know how to make it work and I don't want to anyway. I truly enjoy the landing with very low visibility.

March Flights
Hello fellow pilots,

Here is a list of my flights made for the month of March. Unfortunately, they are only a few of the flights I wanted to do. My work schedule is hectic and I was injured 5 days ago, hence my delay in reporting.

1. COS-MEM B727-200 FL 390 1 hour, 45 minutes
Encountered severe turbulence at FL330 and
was forced to climb to 390 to get a better ride

2. MEM-COS B727-200 FL 380 1 hour, 30 minutes
Smoother ride on the return flight. Still turbulent
at FL330 to FL 350.

Total flights:2
Total flight time: 3 hours, 15 minutes
No problems on either flight except for turbulence
