Questions re: Folic Acid
My 3 year old is starting 10 mg of MTX tomorrow afternoon after 1 year of unilateral anterior uveitis.

I purchased the Folic Acid as recommended by our Rheumy (1 mg daily), but I don't think I'm going to get my son, Eagan, to swallow a pill. Any suggestions for getting it down the hatch?

Re: Questions re: Folic Acid
Any chance of exchanging it for a Liquid which could be mixed with juice etc?

Re: Questions re: Folic Acid
Ask the pharmacist also about grinding up the pill. Some pills are just fine that way; others are not. If it is OK, try mixing it with applesauce or something of similar consistency that he likes.

Pharmacists know a lot about how to get medications into a form that kids can take. Let us know what you learn.

Our daughter used to chew it - she never complained of the taste.

Re: Questions re: Folic Acid
Hi Aja,

Liquid meds were not fun in this house so we tried many different things. We did check with the pharmacist before doing any of these suggestions, as some pills you can't crush. We put crushed pills in Gatorade, also put in a fruit roll up to sweeten chewing them. Fruit roll ups were a special treat in our house. Our daughter did tire of this though, so we encouraged her to learn to swallow pills. The biggest motivator was simply to "reward" her when she accomplished this with something she really wanted. To teach her to swallow pills, we got empty capsules from the pharmacist and she practiced on them. First we put “pixie stix” powered sugar in them. But then realized it was just as easy to practice on an empty capsule. Then we put the folic acid in the empty capsule when she was ready. Just cut it in half to put in. Easier to swallow a capsule than a pill. Hope this helps. I would just check with the pharmacist so that he okays it.

folic acid
Aja: We had a pharmacy compound it as a liquid. Are there any pharmacies like 'The Medicine Shoppe' where you live? Talk to your pharmacist because if they can't they should know of local pharmacies that still do compounding. Glenn
