RB30DET conversion
just curious how much a conversion to take my RB30E to an RB30DET would cost? and exactly how much work i would have to put in? ATM i have a naturally aspirated 5 sp man 3.0 VL SL with a 2.5" exhaust system, and i want more guts for it also if i was to boost it... would i need to get traction control, how much am i up for there?

RE: RB30DET conversion
I too recently got myself a SL 5 speed, and crave a turbo conversion. I may know a bit about cars and mechanics though when it comes to it I'd rather be getting pissed than changing my clutch.
The conversion does require a few things that you probably havn't even considered. Like, new pistons as your likely to fry the existing ones, a larger oil pump, to help lubricate all the parts after all the added stress, pressure relief valve (i.e blow off valve). The original VL turbo also had a more heavy duty camshaft (though this probably isn't necessary). One more thing, you might have to buy a new computer from a Turbo VL, as you might need an upgraded electronic injection system for the turbo.
Crap like tractioncontrol is a waste, as your commodore doesn't have LSD. Why you need trac. cont. if you really want more power anyway?
Honestly... I say just get yourself a K&N air filter, lighten the fly wheel (so it revs easier) and some new extractors, if this still ain't enough... sell the SL and buy a turbo. Much cheaper, even after you rebuild the engine and turbo!
.
i was considering ripping the whole LSD out of a calais... just so i can put my foot down and not have any unwanted spin... but your probably right... @#%$ it...
the reason i want to replace the camshaft for the skyline double anyway...
the reason was that i was considering adding the turbo and camshaft etc and completely rebuilding the whole engine and then buying a skyline R32 gts body and dumping the newly boosted 3 litre in it
thanks a heap for your input though

Bout to myself
Hey
been told heads r exactly the same as wit the bottom end except the pistons.
Can get the turbo pistons pretty cheap, round $100
Turbo n manifold your lookin at bout $600
Turbo computer is bout $100-150
Mite need the turbo fuel pump which is bout another $100-150
Mite need to upgrade the injectors aswell
All up your prob lookin at bout a $1000+
Prob b cheaper to sell the Atmo RB30 n look for a standard RB30ET, can pick them up for bout $1500 apparently
Your decision
Hope it helps
bout to myself
you have to restud the the rb30 block as the studs in the rb20,25,26 heads are larger.

Re: RB30DET conversion
Hi, Heres holdens info regarding the upgrades to the Vl Turbo as opposed to the stock vl.
Water cooled Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger, different camshaft, new pistons, larger oil pump, detonation sensor, two mode fuel injection system, and pressure relief valve in the inlet manifold.
Larger diameter front and rear disc brakes plus Girlock's finned Corvette-style calipers at the front necessitated 15 inch wheels with power steering. Upgraded manual transmission with lower first, second and third ratios, revised automatic transmission minus torque converter lock-up and stronger four pinion differential.
cost conversion
i have a vl n/a auto and im currently converting to a turbo model. i herd alot of rumors about doing but i had a mate that did his rb30et conversion without a head spacer or without changing the auto.
the parts you need a:
- turbo injectors
- turbo computer (but not nessecary)
- turbo manifold
- turbo
- intake off the turbo to throttle body
- oil lines and water line to and from turbo
- silcon piping to join a few things together
- air box to turbo piping
- turbo computer
- turbo fuel pump (but not nessecary)
- knock sensor (but not nessecary)
i brought my setup complete without the oil lines and water lines and knock sensor for $1000. Without a head spacer the vl spools up at about 2200 rpm and they beat stocky vl turbos by about 4 car lengths so its well worth doing the mod and its not that hard. The worst thing to do is changing the injectors and messuring all the ol and water lines. besides that the vl will fly. I also am changing my auto to a turbo auto which i picked up for $400 off a mate and saw it running just make sure that its not slipping but a manual will have no troble. Have fun modifing boys

just done an rb30 conversion
just long ago i put up a list of parts for an rb30et conversion. i just finished mine and ill tell you you dont need a vl turbo computer. The turbo computer makes the car run to lean and creates pinging so just use the standard one but this runs a little rich. The only prob i had with my conversion is that i have a series one block and on them there is no oil returns or oil in lines to the turbo so i had to drop my sump and add a pipe to the top of it and tap and oil line from the oil pressure sensor next to the oil filter on the other side. Also i found out that the standard oil pump is fine and should die.
RB25DET head conversion on VL block
I have a couple of things to mention here since i have done 2 rb30det conversions on VL blocks:
Fist of all i have to say this guy has NO ideea what he is talking about!
QUOTE from "oldenholden64"
- heads definately do not bolt straight on
-you have to restud the the rb30 block as the studs in the rb20,25,26 heads are larger.
You obviously dont know jack about rb20/25/26! the head bolts for the RB25 are shorter because they go deaper into the head and as for the difference between rb25 and rb30 studs. They are IDENTICAL!
Second of all, just to clear some stuff up, rb25det head fits STRAIGHT onto a VL block (turbo or N/A). There are no water/oil galleries that have to be drilled or tapped except for the series I block. A stock oil pump (N/A) is fine if you dont boost the turbo over 15PSI. VL computer cannot be used as well as the vl wiring loom. The RB25 wiring loom needs to be connected to the vl (electrician will do it for $400-500 with a wiring diagram) its not hard to do, and the Skyline computer needs to be used if you cannot afford an aftermarket computer.
Overall, the rb30 > rb25det head conversion is quite simple and with the right tools will be done in 5-8 hours. (unless your rebuilding the block, i did and i dont advise to just bolt it straight on)
RB25DET head conversion on VL block
well VLCalaisRB30DET I said definately just so that i wouldnt give the impression that you could simply bolt the head on.. if someone had an rb30et and bolted one of those heads on they would then go "how come my compression is so @#%$" and then "why cant I not find a cam belt that will fit my motor" then if they got a variable valve timed head then they would have not realised that you have to block off the oil pressure to that and run other lines... and so you see I didnt exactly word that rite by sayind definately but whateva I dont care
