Regarding Shingles Vaccine
I thought it would help to start a new thread for the question raised in teh previous post. Just an FYI for those of you thinking about the vaccine called Zostavax. It is intended only for NON-IMMUNOCOMPROMISED individuals. The FDA approved the vaccine for those 60 and older to "boost" the immune system to provide protection against the re-emergence of Herpes zoster. The vaccine contains LIVE, attenuated virus. It contains a slightly lower titer of the viral proteins than the children's vaccine called Varivax.
Unfortunnately, it is unknown how well it will work over time. This likely is related to the immunocompetence of the individuals who receive it. The optimal time of life to get it appears to be for 60-70- year-olds, and after some experience over the first few years with the vaccine it appears those who are older are not necessarily going to benefit from it.
Re: Thanks
Thanks for the information Stephanie. I am 60 now and really don't want to get shingles if at all possible and that is why I got the shot. I'm not on anything that suppresses the immune system a this time. lots of meds though for other complications from all of this stuff.
