After discovering some of her things where taken, Riley didn't seem to understand that Catherine was gone.. if he did he didn't show it, because he'd keep waiting by her door or knocking on it between classes. The first day she wasn't around he didn't leave 10 feet of her room incase she's return and he's miss her. Dawn told him off for missing the entire day, of classes, but he didn't seem to care or reply to her argument. The next he managed to get to his classes, but he barely did even touched any of his work, it wasn't until a month after when he started dropping out of his classes, taking up mostly arts, wood works, and other hands on classes.
The main reason for his drop of classes was because his grades where dropping and he lost interest in studying, everyone was worrying over his drop in grades, so if he stopped those classes, they wouldn't worry over him any more.. or so he figured. But Riley ended up using only one theme for his creative outlets.. everything seemed based on Catherine, and if you thought just maybe something wasn't based on Catherine.. you'd figure out it might have something to do with what he wanted to do with Catherine.. Like when he did a wooden horse in woodworks, Dawn was so glade he was moving off the hundreds of sketches he has been doing of Catherine and onto something else.. only to have him say he would love to have been able to go horse riding with her..
Riley avoided any outings and became rather easily annoyed to any of the girls who seemed to ask him to any of the special school events. What right did they have to ask him, he wasn't EVER going to hold or be close to anyone else, Catherine would still come back for him, he just had to wait..
June
Most of the students left for the June/July holidays, Even Dawn went off to Harmony to spend some time with Jennifer, the Lost Angels Vampire Slayer who was her sister in this dimension before Angelus, a powerful vampire, had murdered her. Angela went down to Australia to visit her brothers and her best friend Ruby Rose who she considers to be her little sister. Riley refused to go to Iowa to see his family as some of his friends suggested, he was refusing to leave the school since Catherine left, what if he left and she came back and he wasn't around?
Riley spend most of his that wasn't locked within his room or down in the arts hall horse riding with Heath, or Heath teaching him the basic forms of sword play while Riley passed his time teaching Heath the modern art of fighting. Whenever Riley did any studies, or paintings, sketches or such, he always went down to the spot where he last lay with Catherine by the lake. He get's highly agitated when people try and talk with him while he's down there, even Dawn avoids going down to the lake if she needs to talk with him.
Riley's still fussing over the wooden horse he started the month before, he keeps insisting it's ugly and he wants to get it done for Catherine when she returns. Dawn's very upset with his stubborn belief that Cat will return, and she's very angry that Cat has left and done this to Riley. Angela’s upset because she thinks if she went with Cody then Cat would still be here and Riley wouldn't be slipping away from his education and falling into this serious state of depression.
July
Most of the students returned to the school in mid July, Dawn was upset to see Riley waiting at the gates for Cat to return with the others, he seemed disappointed and stalked off after Dawn told him Cat wasn't coming back.
Riley had begun a diary again, Cody returned the diary they found in his room when he was missing and began learning about his time here in the school. He wrote his diary as if he was sending Catherine letters, but he didn't know where to send them so the letters where building up on his desk at the end of every week, one page for each day, seven pages in every letter..
Riley took up guitar, Dawn thinks it's an excuse to avoid being nagged to go out, because his music classes where between 6pm and 8pm. Riley had picked up the habit of being in bed by 8:30-9, he woke about 4-5am and normally went off to eat alone and then spend some time either horse riding or catching him with some of his art projects if he was falling behind in getting them done on the due date.
Riley received a letter from Catherine.. even if it was extremely short, he carefully folded it and cornered Lisa to demand to be told where the letter was sent from. He keeps the letter neatly folded in his wallet where a picture should be placed, but since he didn't have any other then the ones he drew, he placed her letter then instead.
August
Riley seemed to be feeling better, but that's because he thinks that Catherine will return for the September holidays and he's ordered her a new uniform since her other one is missing. Riley spent extra time tutoring to earn more money, even though he had plenty, he was determined to take Catherine out somewhere special as a sorry for forgetting her.
His more pleasant mood lasted for 2 weeks, mainly because it was half way through the holidays and still Catherine hadn't returned. The letter had sparked his hopes that she was coming back soon, that she hadn't forgotten about him, he had all those letters he wanted to return to her and he couldn't give them because they didn't know her address and Cody wasn't being very helpful since he kept disappearing for on end to be with his father.
September
Riley moved through a collection of musical instruments, from the violin, to the drums, then some times on a keyboard and even began piano lessons that went from 4-6pm.. which Dawn was very angry about, spending 4 hours after classes doing music and then almost right away heading off to bed meant they never saw the guy.
For Angela's birthday on the 24th, Riley gave her a card with $300 inside it, she was shocked, but when Angela tried to hand it back Riley got very angry and frustrated, yelling at her for being as bad as Catherine and that he wants her to have the money for her gift and she doesn't have a right to knock back his present. He had stormed out of the party in the Rec Hall and no one saw him for the last week of the month, he didn't even go to class, though he handed all his work in by the end of the week.
October
Riley seemed to lose all interest in anything, he even quit the music classes he had taken up, he stopped most of his tutor classes and the only time he spent with the others was when they where either eating at dinner or where in the Rec Hall playing or chatting, but he'd be quiet and normally busily sketching away in his sketch book that Angela got him after she felt guilty for getting him so upset on her birthday..
Dawn and Angela, as well as all the others, got only more worried when it seemed Riley's reply to questions had come down to either a depressed half forced smile meaning yes, or turning his back and walking off, or even simply ignoring them and focusing on his sketches as if they weren't there meaning 'no'.
Heath and Riley seemed to begin to spend more time together once again, but Riley began demanding more from Cody and even began throwing around his weight in demand for the younger boy to put effort into finding Catherine. Dawn wasn't sure how Riley got files on planes that left the state, but none-the-less he had them and was spending hours locked away in his room searching for the flight he was positive she must have taken. But then it had occurred to him that she wouldn't have had the money, growing all the more frustrated he went to Jarod for some help.. Catherine had a record right.. Cops keep records, then all he had to do was get into a police department in Washington and he'd have access to her records!
November
Dawn got in an argument with Riley when she discovered he intended to go off after her, Riley wanted to chase after her the first week she went missing, but it was only a passing comment and the girls all told him that was stupid for him to go.. it seems the recent months haven't swayed him, he's determined to find her since she doesn't seem to be coming back...
Riley had packed only three sets of every item of clothing, three jumpers, three socks, three shirts, etc.. he remembered his weapons and ordered Lisa and the others to return BOTH of the guns to his possession, he wouldn't allow the girls to hold onto them any longer. Taking his Initiative Issued Hand gun, Riley packed that, but although he was set for his travels, Riley still wasn't sure WHERE in Washington he should be heading, waiting for Jarod and Cody to set up his new false identity so the Initiative might over look him slipping out of the state.
Riley finally finished his wooden statue of a horse.. although Dawn was sure it was finished months ago, but he kept sanding, polishing, adding fine lines in the main and tail.. He also had a dislike for the eyes, but he was finally satisfied with them now. Dawn can't see why he's so determined to make the thing so perfect, he didn't fuss as much for his other art works. Though Dawn and Angela had gotten rather worried when Riley started doing sketches of something they where doing.. like a picnic or a game of table tennis and Cat would be seen joining in with all his pictures, watching the two players, eating and chatting with them as if she was there.. Dawn got rather upset Riley was doing that to himself..
Riley hasn't spoken a single word to any of them, he's practically gone mute, he just felt he had nothing to say.. he didn't want to speak.. he didn't have the heart any more.. Finally Riley told his team what most of them already feared he was going to try and do, taking all of the money he had, his packed bag, and a new identity he got from both Cody and Jarod. Riley then made his way out of the state, taking a helicopter into Washington after he got chased both at the train station and when he considered getting a privet jet at the airport to take him.
December
On the first day of December Riley arrived into Washington and took up his new identity as Officer Riley Johnson, the young officer all too happy to be put on simple patrols. All of Riley's co-workers easily got the gist that he was going through some form of depression, he was partnered with a female officer and although Kimmie Doire was at first trying hard to get to know Riley.. she quickly gave up and just enjoyed the rather long and silent rides out on patrol..
