Roleplay
Northguard Speach Guidelines

The Basics ...
· We use [ ... ] for speaking out of character -- i.e. [Have you heard what's in patch 1.55c??]
· We use for emoting -- i.e.
· When not in brackets, your words should always be in the voice of your character.

When speaking in Character ...
· DO get silly, serious, have flights of fancy, and roleplay up a storm.
· DON'T forget that you are doing it with 100 of your closest friends.
· DO use abbreviations that characters of Midgard might come up with. i.e. "14 Albs at Nott!"
· DON'T use abbreviations from Real Life or the game mechanics. i.e. "LOL I just got so many RPs off that kill! AFK to tell my GF"
· DO speak in whatever dialect you care to dream up within the world of Midgard. i.e. "Yar, I whacked 'em good, thank yer!"
· DON'T speak in computer-culture dialects like "d00dsp34k". i.e. "I pwned them, thx"
· DO feel free to greet the Guild, wave good bye, or report a personal success. i.e. "I've gained the 25th Rage of Modi!"
· DO avoid strange emoticons.

When speaking [Out of Character] ...
· DON'T be afraid to :) every once in a while.
· DO say pretty much whatever you'd like. i.e. "[lol you are right, Glauk, the Azure Warriors ARE smurfs in disguise!]"
· DO use brackets if you are in midst of heated battle and don't trust your fingers to stay IC. i.e. "[omw to help.. gotta relog for graphics bug.]"
· DON'T start bracketting things that are perfectly in character. i.e. "[Got room for a 37 Healer?]"

When these guidelines are ignored ...
· DO be kind and forgiving.
· DON'T abuse the kindness and forgiving nature of others.
· DO speak directly using /send to people who need help speaking truely.
· DON'T become confrontational in Guild chat over the issue.
· DO report serious or repeat offenses to the Officers of the guild.

Guild chat is heard by lots of people, many of whom are often busy doing other things. Sometimes they don't hear you when you ask a question or if there's a group somewhere you can join. Remember that Guild chat is no substitute for doing /who Upplands (or wherever) and speaking directly to someone.

What is Roleplay and Why Do We Do It?
Its a great deal of fun to create a back story and persona behind a character then "act" it out. What did they experience growing up? Why? How would that make them act (and possibly but not necessarily speak)?

I started Krylen as a murderously horrible flirt. As I started thinking about his character (a berserker), I asked myself how would a berserker be treated by society. I came up with:

"Fierce temperments make fierce warriors but poor citizens. A norse Viking by heritage, he wielded a weapon of one sort or another almost from birth. Krylen's uncontrollable rage made him am ideal Son of Modi. Shunned by most townsfolk, this berserker spends most of his time roaming the hinterlands and frontiers seeking his next worthy battle to earn valor and eventually his entry to Valhalla."

Over time I started developing his back story. This was mostly a mental exercise but I would cover pieces of it in my writing (no comments from the peanut gallery about my horrible fictional writings - please) and RPing. In a condensed sense it would be:

"Krylen left home and wandered the wilderness as a teen. He was pressed into thralldom and became an thug to terrorize enemy clans. After buying his freedom, he spent years learning the trade of death in realm wars. He is savage and uncouth. As a follower of Modi, he is fond of drink, women, and war (not necessarily in that order). He is fiercely loyal to his friends and Clan yet all always at odds with his destructive nature. "

As time progressed, I started to wonder how a person that grew up this way would not only act but speak. Yes became aye. You became ye. Little by little his speech began to change.

"Hello there Greta. Its great to see you again. How are you?"

slowly became:

"Hail Greta! Tis good te see ye again. How 'ave ye been?"

You do not need to alter your language to RP. As an example, Brelik (Krylen's younger brother) is a spiritmaster and scholar. He speaks regular English (as you might expect a studied person to do). Language is fun to play with but not necessary.

Many folks alter their language when they RP another race (esp. troll or kobold). However I have seen people RP another race and use regular English. It still works. In fact, one person in particular plays a troll that was adopted as a child and grew up in Jordheim and speaks plain English.

RP is not language but can encompass it. RP is character concept and being true to that concept. Altered language is optional and can be fun too.

But the real fun begins when you interact with others that RP. Whether you simply enjoy their character, listen to their stories, or roleplay a part of their story over time. I remember Jorunn had a great storyline about a character named Einnar. I was floored when one day I actually met a character named Einnar.

Roleplaying adds a layer of richness on top of the DAoC/UO/EQ, etc tapestry. It gives your character a sense of context and identity. At first it is something you need to consciously do. Over time it just becomes second nature.

Finally, it’s a lot of fun to create new characters with completely different backgrounds and personality types. When you feel that you've mastered one character's quirks and they become old hat. Create a new one and start all over.

What next?
We have talked a little bit about how people developed their characters and what it means to RP. To summarize, one develops an background and personality for their character and then "acts" the part in game. It is not necessarily the way one talks (with an accent or whatever) but what one says and does.

Taking this from being a solitary exercise to interacting with other people and sharing a story line is where the fun really begins. Develop a story/idea and share it with another. If they agree then try it in game.

As an example....

I tried a kobold runemaster a while back. The idea I had for the kobold was that he would be impish (prankster), somewhat lazy, and scheming. I decided it might be fun if Freyla was his Master. So I contacted Freyla and asked her OOC what she thought of the idea. She agreed and immediately the kobold began to refer to her as Master. She preferred Mistress and corrected him. Of course the kobold immediately explored the other context of that word and she quickly corrected him (with quite a tongue lashing over guild chat).

Freyla did a great job of handling the kobold in guild chat. We also had a very good time RPing when she was crafting in Myrkwood and the kobold would come by for training. The kobold would take her to the edge of her patience and Freyla would rein him in quite well.

At one point she was giving the kobold a well-deserved admonishment and the kobold twisted her words in a joke. She just lost it. The kobold ran for cover but came back later for more. The people sitting at Gna Faste crafting were laughing.

That particular example was off the cuff. It did not take any time to develop or RP but was fun. I was actually laughing out loud myself and I think Freyla got a laugh out of it as well.
