Sears Twin 16
Hi,
any body use this tractor in pulls? Does it pull well? Mine is about 25 or more years old. works ok I guess.
I do have trouble with the clutch not releasing. Any suggestions would help.
Where can you get accessories or emplements to use with the tractor?
does it actually have a clutch or is it belt driven?
I have a sears super 12(196 and its belt driven.
it does pretty good. But not as well as my "L" head twin 18 husky
on a side note, im glad to see some posted something.
was begining to think i wasted my time with this board.
Re: Sears Twin 16
Yes it is a belt drive and it seems that when you push in the clutch pedal it just keeps on pulling. I have used my tractor since I got it to mow the grass and it does that well just has clutch problems.
I was told not to get rid of the tractor cause it was a very good one at the pulls. I cant even find out about tractor pulls in the area at all. all I found so far was this board.
I also am looking for some empliments to use with it. Got any sources.

Re: Sears Twin 16
From the drivers seat if you look down on by your right leg you will see a bolt with a slot runing up and down...thats what i call the "slack" adjuster. If you look under your tractor you will see a pully just behind the clutch pully. if you loosen that bolt and pull that pullyall the way up, it will make the belt have more slack, making it easyer to stop the tractor, shift, and start it. I set my belt a little tight, so it tends to grind a little when i shift, but i know it wont slip that way.
Re: Sears Twin 16
Hi,
Thanks for the information.
I guess I'm the culprit cause I put it down a ways when I changed the belt. Thought it was too loose and as I remember it was throwing the new belt at the time.

HI Turbo,
I adjusted the Slack adjuster and now the clutch releases just fine. Maybe I will do some more adj and find out how it changes so I will know next time what to do. I was not safe to use acutually the way it was so I did not let anyone else use it. Now I probably could let some one else drive it. I does pull good.
I put my 3 point hitch on the back again and realized that I dont have the top piece. the third unit. Do you happen to know how long that piece would have been? I can make another one.
THe front axle has brackets on the upper and lower side of the front axle about 10" apart. Do you know what that was for? I have decided it was for mounting stuff like a blade or a snow blower. I think one was made for this machine but I dont know for sure.
Does your tractor have the three speed transmission with a high and low shifter on the right side of the tractor?
My grandfather had a Sears SS/15 with that transmission and it pulled a single plow like it wasn't even back there. The tractor was sold about 10 years ago and I don't know where it is now.
I am hoping to build a Massey Ferguson 12 or 14 this winter for my son to pull in the stock class. I was torn on which one to use. Massey or Sears. I decided to go with Massey because I want to be different. If I can find the time and money, I may build the Massey for myself and a Sears for my son.
Re: Sears Twin 16
about all the sears ss tractors, along with the 2 other models has the high low range on the right side(looking from seat) I pull my ss 12 in low range 2 or 3rd gear, depending on the track. but my engine isn't stock either.

Re: Sears Twin 16 New site also
Hi Turbo,
I been out of town for a couple of days. I found a new pulling site to check out also. sneakypetespullers.tripod...hedule.htm
I see we have 4 members now Kool.
I wish we had some pulls here in the Houston area. I am retired now and am trying to sell my house and will be moving to NW Arkansas. I hope to find some pullers up there. Ill be in Russellville for a while.
Re: Sears Twin 16 New site also
Hi everyone, I thought that I would let you know I have a st16 sears that I pull with. I pull 3rd gear high range in 800 lbs and 2nd high in 1000 and 1200 lbs class It's a stock tractor that I use to cut my grass, blow snow and till gardens with. I also pulled this year in a modified class with tractors that had snowmobile and motorcyle engines in them, and I pulled 900 lbs modifed in 2nd high and took 3rd place and they put the chain under the pan to slow the higher powered tractors down. I told them that I didn't think that I would even move the sled, but it surprised me, I think that the lug tires helped quite a bit. Just to let you know that these tractors are pretty good at pulling, regardless of what motor is in them
