Security at the Institute
Thought this might be helpful. Now although its written as if this is definitively how the system is, this is just my first draft, up for general comment and discussion. All ideas gratefully received. I have tried not to make it too impenetrable given that we need to have some fun and also for the needs of the CO storyline but if people think I can go further then I will.
Security at the Xavier Institute has always been a major problem. The school is after all intended to be a sanctuary for mutants and many who arrive there are fleeing for their lives or struggling with powers they are unable to control. To turn the Institute into an impenetrable fortress would mean that these lost souls could find themselves confronted with locked doors where they needed open arms.
On the other hand however Xavier’s enemies are numerous and ruthless whether it be the agents of the Weapon X, the Brotherhood, or any of the assorted evil mutants who have cause to hate the school and all it stands for. Somewhere a balance has to be reached between keeping the students safe and making them feel that they are living in a prison, especially as many of them have no idea as to the real activities of the academy. Here is a brief explanation of the security system as it now stands.
There are cameras, both obvious and hidden surveying all the perimeters of the Institute inside and out. These will automatically film anyone approaching the main gate whether the gates be open or closed and also capture anyone climbing over the walls or approaching the manor through the grounds. In addition there are heat and movement sensor covering the same parameters. (these have been adapted to capture the heat spectrum of vampires and demons) This means that they would detect any invisible or camouflaged intruders but not intangible ones.(The system can of course be gotten round but a reasonable explanation would have to be provided.)All possible means of entrance are covered in this way Every door every window. All students have a swipe key card which allows them to open the gates after they have been officially closed for the evening. The gates are open to the public so to speak from 8am to 8pm but will be opened to anyone seen to be in need outside of these hours. A student forgetting their key will be let in but be subject to close scrutiny ( could be someone impersonating them) and should expect a talking to.
Inside the manor itself cameras are kept to a minimum. There has to be some privacy after all. There are some in the front hall however and in several of the corridors. There are cameras on all possible access routes to the secure underground areas of the mansion. Here access is strictly on a personal recognition basis.Com badges which have built in individual access codes are necessary to reach the danger room etc while access to the advanced med lab is done by handprint and dna recognition and Cerebro also has a brain pattern recognition system.
All of this information is fed back to a general security monitoring post manned by students assigned to this duty. ( could be a place to post maybe if we wanted to). All expected arrivals are marked on a schedule there and all new arrivals will be met in the front hall Any ‘visitors’ , parents, friends, dropping in, will also be picked up here and someone will be sent to intercept them before they start blithely wandering around unescorted. Photos and details of all students and ‘guests’ at the mansion are stored in the computer memory banks so that ‘strangers are always brought to the attention of those on duty.
When there is any doubt about whether or not to grant access the matter is referred back to the head of security Hank McCoy or to Jean Grey in the absence of Professor Xavier..
