Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
SLEEP PARALYSIS

What is sleep paralysis?

Sleep paralysis consists of a period of inability to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset (called hypnogogic or predormital form) or upon awakening (called hypnopompic or postdormtal form).

Sleep paralysis may also be referred to as isolated sleep paralysis, familial sleep paralysis, hynogogic or hypnopompic paralysis, predormital or postdormital paralysis

What are the symptoms?

A complaint of inability to move the trunk or limbs at sleep onset or upon awakening
Presence of brief episodes of partial or complete skeletal muscle paralysis
Episodes can be associated with hypnagogic hallucinations or dream-like mentation (act or use of the brain)
Polysomnography (a sleep recording) shows at least one of the following:

suppression of skeletal muscle tone
a sleep onset REM period
dissociated REM sleep
Is it harmful?

Sleep paralysis is most often associated with narcolepsy, a neurological condition in which the person has uncontrollable naps. However, there are many people who experience sleep paralysis without having signs of narcolepsy. Sometimes it runs in families. There is no known explanation why some people experience this paralysis. It is not harmful, although most people report feeling very afraid because they do not know what is happening, and within minutes they gradually or abruptly are able to move again; the episode is often terminated by a sound or a touch on the body.

In some cases, when hypnogogic hallucinations are present, people feel that someone is in the room with them, some experience the feeling that someone or something is sitting on their chest and they feel impending death and suffocation. That has been called the “Hag Phenomena” and has been happening to people over the centuries. These things cause people much anxiety and terror, but there is no physical harm.

What else can you tell me about sleep paralysis?

Some people with disrupted sleep schedules or circadian rhythm disturbances experience sleep paralysis
A study found that 35% of subjects with isolated sleep paralysis also reported a history of wake panic attacks unrelated to the experience of paralysis
Sixteen percent of these persons with isolated sleep paralysis met the criteria for panic disorder.

How can I stop the sleep paralysis?

In severe cases, where episodes take place at least once a week for 6 months, medication may be used.

You may be able to minimize the episodes by following good sleep hygiene:

getting enough sleep
reduce stress
exercise regularly (but not too close to bedtime)
keep a regular sleep schedule

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
Hallucinatory sleep paralysis

A more terrifying sister to the common sleep paralysis is the hallucinatory sleep paralysis also known as the hypnagogic sleep paralysis and the Hag phenomena.

There are three major differences between Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis (HSP) and CSP.

Characteristics of sleep paralysis

1 Whereas CSP is common and universal HSP is rare and seems to be geographically episodic.

2 CSP is of raletively short duration where HSP can last as long as seven or eight minutes.

3 The major difference of course is that CSP maybe unsettling for the sleeper but the HSP is accompanied by a nightmarish hallucination.

There is evidence that HSP seems to affect an area (e.g. a village) much like an epidemic. A region that has had no HSPs reported may all of a sudden be innundated by sleepers suffering from HSP. Though this is relatively new research it seems regions stay infected for upwards to three years, with the most common being only a few months. There is of yet no explanation for this.

HSP also seems to run in families, but a hereditary connection is still to be found. A great deal of research is currently being conducted in Canada and Europe.

The most striking difference between HSP and CSP are the horrifying hallucinations that accompany the paralysis. The source of the hallucination has often been attributed to the hypnagogic state (the state between wakefulness and sleep.) An individual usually awakens either because they hear something or they feel something. The thing to remember is this occurs outside of a dream sequence/plot. The individual is wide awake yet paralysed like in CSP. Moments after the person is awoke they are startled by a terrifying visual hallucination. Almost inevitably, this hallucination takes on a stereotypical form. It is usually a vision of a small malevolent creature that straddles the victim. The creature then either compresses the chest or attemps to strangulate the victim. Most victims report that the creature is actively trying to kill them.

The visual hallucination has been variously interpreted throughout time and in different cultures as being: indigestion ("hippocrites" for the Hellenic Greeks), guilt for the Romans and the Egyptians, witchcraft for the Mexicans and Yoruba people, demons for Medieval Europe, djinn for the Arabs, vampires for Europeans, Hag for the Irish and Scottish, spectral foxes for the Japanese, cats for the Chinese, ancestral ghosts for South-East Asians, etc. Despite the various interpretations, the descriptions of the hallucinations are remarkably similar. There are hudreds of folk remedies to avoid HSP. But the most common is to not sleep on your back. Almost all attacks have been reported by people sleeping on their backs.

HSP like CSP appears to be physically harmless though there's current research looking at the connection between HSP and Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome or SUNDS.

Oh wow mstik that was excellent reading. I was on my back but the people whom I saw were not harmful. And I do believe I was stressed back then and did suffer panick attacks. So im not sure what type of paralysis that was, I think the second one, but this has only happened once in my life. What a great find thank for posting that. :D

It might be a possibility, its weird though because ive heard doing that in your sleep is a visitation for the other side, and then they call it sleep paralysis.

Wow, thanks Mstik. That is some interesting stuff.

I get very little of that REM sleep. Most nights, I wake up several times during the night, not from any hallucinations or paralysis - that I'm aware of. My doctor wanted me to do a sleep analysis a couple of years ago and they found out that I suddenly stop breathing - very very briefly - but breathing stops and they said my heart rate took a nosedive during those moments. No explanation for it. No medication for it. Apparently, when that happens is when I wake up, kind of like the mind telling the body to get back up I suppose. It was never explained very well to me.

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
That does sound like sleep apnia Mery, not a bad case of it but it does sound like a mild form. My ex father n law has it. Has it bad. He went to Duke University for several days so that they could diagnose and study his condition. There wasn't much that they could do for him, I believe that they told him that a type of breathing device worn over night would be his best form of treatment.

As far as the sleep paralysis goes, for me it seems that there is one main difference between a visitation and the paralysis and that is the paralysis itself. Just speaking on my own experiences here I've never had the feeling of being paralized during a visitation, (Good or bad) it's always been the opposite remaining in that "quazi" state of consciousness.

I don't presume that it is the same for everyone, but sleep paralysis is a very real medical condition and can have some
very terrorizing affects on some of the people that suffer from it. Reading up on the topic has been very interesting and worth a read for anyone that's into the study of ghost phenomena.

That was very interesting M. Thanks for the info.
Yes Mery, that does sound like sleep apnea. I want my husband to be checked for it, but he hasn't gone yet.

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
Ya'll are right...Sleep Apnea (sp?), that's what the doctor called it. I just couldn't remember it. Yes, I do have a moderate form of it and I was given a machine with a breathing device to wear over my face at night, but I could never get used to it. The machine made a loud humming noise that irritated the crap out of me and that bulky plastic oxygen mask looking thingy with the spiral tube leading to the machine felt like I was suffocating myself. It never failed, I took that sucker off every time in my sleep. I'd wake up to find it on the floor, so I just quit using it. Why bother? I couldn't keep it on.

I've been having a real problem sleeping lately, so I might just dig that thing back out, hook it up and try it again. Maybe that will help.

Mery maybe give that machine another go. It's always worth a second shot. I hope something helps. There's nothing worse then not getting rest consistently like that.

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
Can you tell me what it means when you have a dream/vision of someone standing at the end of your bed looking at you? I moved into a new apartment, it was my first night there, a VERY bad nights sleep. I woke with a jerk in the morning. There was someone standing at the end of my bed, a man I think-in my dream. He seemed more curious than malicious. Was it a bad dream and a testament to my amazing imagination, or something more? The house is from 1911. I do not feel that comfortable in it. The girl that lived there before was there 8 years so it is not a revolving door. Any ideas??? I have been sleeping on a blow up matress in the front room of the house as I am kind of freaked out in the bedroom. Let me know what you think.

Hmm not sure has anything else happened to you? Ive experienced the same thing when i moved into my home. now and then strange stuff will happen, but rarely. You may want to take some pictures in your home and see if anything shows up.

I agree with Jenn here Gina. Start making notes of anything peculiar that happens, moved keys, missing items, found items in odd places, unexplained shadows, temperature differences in parts of the house...that's just a few things. All of which BTW I got from posts on this site. The home itself being from 1911, I'd certainly do some serious digging to find out more of its history and about those who have lived there. Let us know if you find out anything if you pursue it. Good luck!

I really can't add anything more than what's already been suggested. Only thing is, I'd tell you to relax. Spirits are usually pretty harmless. It probably just wanted to welcome you and make it's presence known. :D

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
So far nothing unusual. No issues with temperature, no items missing. One cat is freaking out, and acting very unusual. It is going on one month now and she cries a lot. Every day at around 5 am she begins. It is strange.

Seems like I have more of a feeling like I am not alone. I leave the lights on in the kitchen and other unoccupied rooms. I have NEVER been afraid of the dark, but I am in this place. My other cat seems to see things I do not. He will suddenly star at something and that is maybe what has me on edge.

I know it is not good to have fear and I have committed to live in this place for a year so I have to get used to whatever is there.

I understand you might be weary of the fact that you dont know if its a spirit or not. But living in a new place you need to feel out for a bit. Creaks and appliances that your not use to can make you think up some werid stuff. Also My cats freak out at a certain time of day, this is at night though, and its routine on a nightly basis. But there really is nothing to be afraid of. I know its hard to say that. You have control over any issue.

Re: Sleep Paralysis or Paranormal exp?
I had my first memorable bout with sleep paralysis when i was i high school and on a trip in Italy. I fell asleep in my hotel and moments later i woke up feeling i was being choked. I knew I was totally helpless but i had 2 friends in the room with me. I managed to force out a very light sounding high pitched scream (if that makes sense) enough to get both of their attentions. It was a very diificult thing to do but i really thought that if they did not wake me from this state i would not be able to breathe, which was difficult at that moment, and just die. At that moment i saw a grey, almost transparent circular image over me as I lay in bed. My eyesight worked fine as I could see this image, or thorugh it actually and i was able to see my friends as well. I couldnt turn my head or move my body but i could move my eyeballs. Anyway, they heard my noise and shook me awake after which i thanked them for saving my life. After this incident I have consciously kept track of all of the times I have episodes of sleep paralysis. It ALWAYS occurs when I am sleeping somewhere that I am not used to. This explains why it happenned in the hotel. I have moved 3 times since then and whenever I move into a new place I get it really bad for a few weeks. It always seems to go away after a few weeks. I guess you just get used to where you sleep after a while.
Well..I haven't moved in 2 years now and have not had an episode since my last move. But i feel for all the people who experience it. My first episode prompted me to research everything about it that I could find. At least I know I'm somewhat "normal" and this happens to lots of people around the world. :)
Sleep Tight!
