Some Fantastic Modification?
I once saw this done elsewhere, so thought I’d give it a try here. This is the deal…
There are some B-sides which are brilliant, and some tracks on albums that, well, aren’t. Can you improve on any of the albums by swapping them around? The B-sides must be from the same period.
For example on Some Fantastic Place I would lose Loving You Tonight, Talk To Him, True Colours and Pinocchio. In their place I’d include Is That The Time?, Discipline, Don't Be A Stranger and Stark Naked.
New track listing:
Everything in the World
Some Fantastic Place
Third Rail
Is That The Time?
It's Over
Cold Shoulder
Discipline
Jolly Comes Home
Images of Loving
Don't Be A Stranger
Stark Naked
So there you go. Is that an improvement, or have I just wrecked a Squeeze classic?
Oh dear. That's a tricky one, as I'm not sure where most of the B sides I've heard come from, date-wise! I think it may take some research for me to do this one.
As far as SFP is concerned I like Loving you Tonight and True colours and wouldn't want to lose them, but I like all the additions you made as well. Can we not have a double album in the manner of The Big Squeeze, with all the B sides on a bonus CD?
Speaking of which, I wonder if GT will do a bonus CD again with the new album.............[licks lips and slobbers uncontrollably at teh prospect of New Glenn album]
Re: Some Fantastic Modification?
Right - I've done my research and this is my envisaged reworking of Ridiculous.
Electric Trains
Heaven Knows
Grouch Of The Day
Walk Away
This Summer
Sweet as a nut
Never there
Periscope
In another lifetime
Great Escape
Temptation For Love
Sound Asleep
Fingertips
Got To Me, Long Face, I want you & Daphne would have to go (especially Daphne).
Re: Some Fantastic Modification?
Fun idea this Steve
I like the sound of the re-worked SFP and Ridiculous albums btw.
I would just make a couple minor adjustments to Sweets from a Stranger and replace Black Coffee in Bed with a faster version (possibly live), then remove Stranger than the Stranger on the Shore (would that entail re-naming the album? *gulp*) and in its place put Elephant Girl. I know that leaves us with 2 Elephant tracks on 1 album but there are already 2 "dance" tracks there so it shouldn't be a problem

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Pinocchio is the best track on there! How can you dump that and yet keep Jolly *yawn* Comes Home?!
I would dump Jolly and Loving You Tonight, and then add Discipline (one of my all-time favourite Squeeze tracks) and Stark Naked in their places.
I love your Sweets, Maggie - much better.
If I had to rework Play, I'd include Maidstone instead of Gone to The Dogs . . . But I think a lot of people would do that too.
Good game, Steve - I'll think up some more when I get the chance!
Re: Some Fantastic Modification?
Pinocchio the best track on SFP! I know this is your message board Vikki but that doesn't stop you being horribly wrong! I just can't get away with Pinocchio at all. It has to go. Jolly was very close to getting the chop too, but at least it has decent lyrics.
As for Ridiculous, that’s a definite improvement, although I do quite like Daphne. (I know, I know, “Don’t be ridiculous!”) Actually there is an import version kicking around with the usual UK track listing and also Periscope and a couple of other additional tracks. I nearly bought it ages ago from HMV then realised I could do the same job myself with a CD writer!
I like the new “Sweets From An Elephant” album too Maggie. There’s not much more you can do with it I don’t think, as the B-sides are a bit limited. Can’t see The Hunt livening it up much!
Isn’t it great that we’re so much better at this than the record company?
Swappage
Reading your reworkings, on practically every one I've thought "Yeah!" then "Noooo!", as I only agree with about half the suggested swaps in each one. I'd never wanna lose Daphne or Gone To The Dogs!
On The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook I would have a preferred the fast paced electric rocky live version of Randy Newman - this was how I heard it first and thought it was incredible, only to be disappointed by the gimmicky album version. Cash Machine would have replaced We Went Thataway as a dynamic closer, and I think that'd improve it plenty!
