State Parks or Private Campgrounds? Where do you do most of your camping? When you choose your destination, do you look for State Parks (or Provincial Parks) or privately owned campgrounds?Show results
I prefer the openness of the state parks. Most states parks in Texas do not have full hookups. If we are going anywhere for an extended period, private is more convenient because they are closer to where we want to be. Plus many private camprounds have full hookups. I’m a member of 1000 Trails and find it is much easier to make and change reservations than at state parks and most private campgrounds. I don’t get charged a cancellation fee if I decide to cancel or have to reschedule like state and private campgrounds.
Re: State Parks or Private Campgrounds?Like Joe, we like membership parks. We used to belong to one that is affiliated with Coast to Coast and RPI. We paid about $500 to join, with dues frozen at $125 a year. This got us into our "home park" (resort park) for free. It gave us the opportunity to join Coast to Coast and/or RPI for about $75 per year (current price). We could then stay at any of their parks (about 300) for $5 or $6 per night. If you figure you're saving $15 per night, it doesn't take long to make up all your dues and start chipping away at the initial $500!
We now belong to Thousand Trails/Naco. They are much more expensive to buy into, but may make sense for fulltimers (dues are pushing $500 per year!). This also gives you an opportunity to join RPI.
