(Sue's room.) A memorable first date

Rebecca.. I know we discussed this but still.. massive god modding here so let me know if i got things right!
..........................................

It had been a good night There wasn’t even an ‘all things considered’ to be added, as there had so often in the past. In fact Matt had actually felt at ease in Sue’s presence, and that was rare. All too rare when you led a double life as he did!

Oh it was far from being the first time he had been attracted to someone . Nor was it the first time some one had responded in kind. That sort of relationship was apparently all too easy for him to accomplish, despite his blindness and the scarring that his hands told him still lingered around his eyes.

In fact , if those same hands were to believed ,i t shouldn’t have been possible at all, this evident attraction he still had for the opposite sex. There was so much damage to be felt each time he ran his fingers over his face! And yet apparently, despite everything that argued to the contrary, the attraction was still there. Matt had long since stopped trying to understand why. It was a Pandora’s Box he was less than willing to open. And one he didn’t even want to consider tonight.

Because….Tonight had been a good night! Maybe even too good. If such a thing was conceivable! Certainly Matt had known that some sort of connection had been possible between himself and the new councillor at the Xavier Institute from the first moment he had met Sue. Pheromones! They never lied. At least not to someone with his abilities! And there had been plenty of them flying between the two of them right from the start. But still…

All too often in the past Matt had thrown himself headlong onto relationships with the same ardour as Daredevil hurled himself off a building. And, more often than not, with a great deal less certainty as too where his leap might take him! Or more importantly take his companion. This time though he wanted to do things right.

Sue was not Electra. Though somehow that wasn’t a problem! And certainly no lightening bolt had struck here galvanising the two of them into some reckless folly. But then again lightening came and went in an instant. Dazzling while it flared but ultimately leaving nothing but ashes in its wake! Burned wreckages of lives! One night stands!

Matt was tired of all that! Tired of the lies and the deceit that surrounded his existence! Here though he had the chance of something different. Ultimately something more! For if there was no lightening here then there was certainly a spark .A mutual attraction that could catch fire at any moment and burn just as fiercely. And hopefully for far, far longer!

He knew they both felt it. It lingered at the edge of their conversation. It tingled in their veins each time they touched. God it would have been so easy to ignite it. One word on his part or on hers! One reckless movement! But that wasn’t what they wanted. Or rather it wasn’t what they wanted out of this evening.

This was no teenage romance! It was a coming together of two people who had already lived through relationships before, and who knew the pain they could cause. And that was ultimately why they danced, like moths, around this particular flame, feeling its pull but careful of their wings all the same.

Still there had been a coming together even if not in the physical sense. His family had already been a subject they had touched upon before. Now he told her openly of his father and the hopes he had held out for his son. Hopes that even the accident and Matt’s subsequent blindness had never destroyed! And which Matt prayed he had realised.

It hadn’t been easy for a kid from hell’s kitchen to become a lawyer. For a blind kid, it had been nothing short of a miracle. But then again Sues own journey had been just as remarkable. And she had done it without the aid of super power! Where he had had heightened senses to help him out she had had only her own determination and a dog. So which of the two of them was the real hero?

For a while, as they had shared a meal and talked it hadn’t mattered. They had been equals,. just as he and Electra had been, though in a very different way. Yes Electra could have met him on any battleground he chose to name and held her own. But Sue…She, like him, had fought battles Electra could never have understood. .Battles against prejudice and pity. And she had won them all.

Now, with this new post she had accepted, she was entering another fight, apparently with her eyes wide open. Not that they had discussed the hidden workings of the Xavier Institute in such a public place. But still, each was aware that the other knew what went on in the basement areas of the school. That was one secret at least that didn’t have to come between them. As for the other…..

That too wasn’t something he could casually bring up over wine and dessert. But that didn’t mean that he was going to keep it hidden forever. Or even for very much longer. After all it was hardly fair to ask Sue to enter into a relationship with him if he kept half of his existence hidden from her. He had been down that road before too many times and it had only lead to disaster. Better by far to get it out into the open before either of them went any further and ended up getting hurt. Though he was glad to have had this time together for her to get to know Matt Murdock, before he introduced her to Daredevil!

The time to do just that was drawing closer though. The meal had gone on for longer than either of them had realised , lost as they were in conversation and each others company. Only the discrete coughing of a tired waiter and Levi’s gentle insistence that a walk was becoming urgent brought them back to reality only to discover that they were the last people in a restaurant that was rapidly closing up around them.

The tip Matt left was more than enough to cover any inconvenience they might have caused and the subsequent midnight stroll round central park had seemed to satisfy Levi’s sense of injustice as well. The blind lawyer smiled at the thought. No one in their right mind walked around the park at that hour, especially not two such helpless looking targets as Sue and himself., but then again Matt had known he could more than handle any street punks that might have come looking for some easy cash and in any case for once the gods had been kind , letting them finish their walk in peace , enjoying the unplanned but nevertheless welcome extension of their time together.

Even the taxi they flagged down was a pleasant change from the usual lot, their driver attentive to what could be perceived as their special needs without being either condescending or overhelpful. Even Levi was welcomed with a warm laugh and ruffling of his soft ears, and if their destination gave the man any cause for concern then even Matt’s senses couldn’t pick it up. Oh there was curiosity in his voice that was for sure, as he repeated the address but that was all. And as he opened the door of the cab for them at the steps of the Institute the “Have a good night now” he offered, turning Matt could tell in Sue’s direction as he did so was as genuine as any the blind lawyer had ever heard.

Yes all in all it had been a good night. Matt only hoped that the ending would go as smoothly as all the rest. It was late now, half past one at least , the halls of the Institute empty except for a few night birds like themselves, the majority of the students safely asleep. Matt was still staying in the guest room Hank had set aside for him during his convalescence, his body now almost fully healed even if his wayward radar sense still refused to fully cooperate. Sue’s room was on the next floor , proper teachers accommodation as opposed to the temporary arrangement Matt had and they took their time getting to it, the blind man having announced mischievously that he could do nothing less than escort her to her door.

There were no ulterior motive behind his words just as there was none in the offer of coffee that Sue extended when they got there, though it was true that Matt had been hoping she would ask him in. Here at last was a place in which secrets could be discussed freely and without fear of interruption and so when Sue had finished making the coffee the young lawyer put an end to their easy banter and instead moved closer taking one of her hands in his as he said “Sue.. this evening has been .. everything I could have hoped for and more…. I cant remember the last time Ive felt this good in someone’s company and I would really really like to repeat the experience…. but.. ‘Matt took a deep breath.. this was it.. make or break.. Before we go any further theres something I have to tell you. “

He didn’t have to be able to see Sue’s eyes to know what she was thinking. That he was married or engaged or even gay.. anything but what he was about to announce. Would this be easier to hear or harder? There was only one way to find out. Matt went to undo the tie he wore, ready to reveal the familiar costume he wore beneath the respectable suit “Sue.. I’m….

The world exploded into sound sending him to his knees his hands covering his ears as he gasped with pain. The alarm had sounded and the night’s peace was shattered forever

Re: (Sue's room.) A memorable first date
How long had it been since Sue had allowed herself to enjoy the company of someone who she felt an attraction to? Her last companion, as charming as he had been, had not lasted, not after she’d moved to her last school. He’d wanted to hold her back, to protect her from the world. A world she’d fought for years to be a part of. And as noble as his intentions may have been, it had been the wedge which, in the end, had driven them apart. Since then, she’d not allowed herself to fall foul of such again. Matt, of course, was not the first she’d felt an attraction to since Bobby, but he was the first who had tempted her away from the security of being single. There was of course, the basic understanding between two who were, in some form, alienated from the ‘normal’ world. But there was something more which drew her to him, and her eyes never left him during the night, and not only to read his lips.

It seemed in many ways the night had passed them so swiftly by, yet every moment still rung clear in her mind, the talking over dinner, and later walking Levi through the park. The air had not been cold, thankfully, but just held enough tinge of warmth to make it comfortable. The moonlight and street lamps which lit the way as they walked also enabled the conversation to continue. And as she grew more used to how he spoke, so her eyes took in more around her, from how the shadows played across Matt’s face to making sure Levi didn’t race off too energetically, though by now there were no other dogs around to distract him. The possible dangers didn’t even seem to come to mind for Sue, though there would always be that tinge of caution, she knew Levi would warn her or protect them if needed, and the canine was too relaxed for there to be anything to fear.

However, as swiftly as her mind seemed to believe the night had gone, and in part her heart, she felt the weariness settle in her muscles as the reached her room. Coffee did have the mild ulterior motive of spending more time with Matt. There was something about him that tinged her interest, beyond what she might normally find in an attractive male. An even if it was only for another half an hour, the company while they both relaxed and warmed up would be nice. Even though her body had warned her, she was surprised when she noticed the time, though she smiled softly to herself, before smirking mildly as her thoughts wandered as she made the coffee. Grinning like a school girl. Well, not grinning as such, but she knew the smile had only fled her lips briefly during the evening, when empathising with Matt or speaking of harsher times in her own past. They’d both over come such adversities. And in away, it was nice. Even if she felt that quiet, brief wish that his sight had never been stolen from him, it was nice to find someone who could understand the prejudices of the world when it came to disabilities.

About to move to hand him his coffee, before she could grip the mug, she felt a hand grasp her’s, and those gentle eyes turned to Matt slowly. Levi was asleep, so it seemed, on a rug close by, so she wasn’t sure if the blonde male had already been trying to speak to her before realising her eyes weren’t on him. But it didn’t seem so, or he hid it well, as he spoke.

“Sue.. this evening has been .. everything I could have hoped for and more…. I cant remember the last time Ive felt this good in someone’s company and I would really really like to repeat the experience…. but.. ‘ Before the ‘but’ she’d been ready to agree, that school girl grin slowly coming to her lips once more, only to falter at that last word. A word which dared to change it all. Before we go any further theres something I have to tell you. “ Her brows rose slightly. What had to be said now that couldn’t earlier in the night, or before even? As predicted, a slight fear crept over her, not helped when his hand lifted to his tie. Such a movement could be out of nerves, perhaps worried about her reaction. “Sue.. I’m….

‘I’m what?!’ she wanted to ask, as Matt suddenly dropped and confusion entered in as his hands covered his ears. What was going on? Her silent world remained just that as she watched him. He was in pain, that was written all over his face. Sensitive hearing. The school bell or some sort of alarm perhaps? It was too late to be the school bell though. The answer, in part, came when Levi suddenly appeared at her waist, paws on her to get her attention before he fell to the floor, flat. Eyes widened as she recognised the command taught to all hearing dogs. Levi had interrupted the painful sound as a fire alarm, though didn’t fully recognise it as such he was trying to warn her regardless. Fire, get close to the floor where there was air. She dropped down, but only to her knees, so she was kneeling in front of Matt, her hands lifting, some confusion in her eyes as she softly placed her fingers on his shoulders. ”Matt.. what’s..” She paused. A piercing alarm… he probably couldn’t hear her. A frown passed her lips in thought before a hope sparked in her. Silently she prayed he knew it as she placed her fingers on one of his hands.

Slowly, not wanting to either get it wrong or misinterpreted, as she rarely used this and had learnt it for her students nor was sure Matt would understand, she started to make a series of gestures on his fingers as best she could considering in away it was reversed. What’s going on? Fire Alarm? She questioned slowly, using the deafblind alphabet. Of course, any noise wouldn’t stop her being able to read his lips, unlike him being able to hear her, so he only had to speak. Hopefully, even if he wasn’t able to understand, he would realise she didn’t know what was happening to a great extent. One thing Sue knew for sure, if Levi was right, whatever this was, they had to get out of here, and her other hand moved instinctively to support Matt when the decision to move was made. Eyes didn’t leave his lips now, waiting for any response, though at the same time her mind was racing, did she have anything that could muffle out the noise for him? Then suddenly a thought came to mind. Her students! If there was some sort of alarm, at this time of night, her deaf students wouldn’t hear it. They would sleep right through. And so Matt’s answer became even more urgent. Because if they had to leave, she wouldn’t do so till she knew her students were safe.

Re: (Sue's room.) A memorable first date
Noise was always his weakness, catching him unawares and splitting his head apart with pain.At least this time though it hadn’t happened in the middle of a fight. Nor were the frequencies emitted by the school alarm system as harmful to him as the ones that had deafened him during his encounter with Doc Occ and left him at the mercy of his enemy.

Still it took time to regain control, or at least some semblance of it. Time to erect mental barriers against the auditory assault, forcing the sound to become just that! A sound, rather than a weapon. Time to start to function again rather than reeling from the unexpected aggression.

Matt knew he didn’t have time though. People like Hank didn’t panic at the first sign of trouble and this strident warning bell would never have been sounded if the school wasn’t under some sort of direct threat. Which meant that he was needed! Daredevil was needed. And it wasn’t pain that was going to stop him from answering its call.

It wasn’t how he had imagined this evening ending. Somehow the school, like his own apartment, had seemed to be a haven of security in the midst of the violence that inevitably overshadowed, not just his life, he had recently come to realise, but also the lives of most mutants. Whether they wanted it too or not! Now though its sanctity had been violated and the fragile peace it offered torn apart. Why and by whom Matt didn’t know. Nor did it matter. This was a battle ground now. And Sue was caught in the middle of it.

Sue! Matt realised that she was kneeling baside him, her fingers tapping out a frantic message on his hand. What’s going on? Fire Alarm? How confusing all this must be for her, and yet her concern was for him, he could feel that, her touch conveying so much more than just the simple letters she was communicating with such skill.

The pain was receding now as Matt got his hearing under control, his willpower honing it until the alarm was reduced to an annoying but manageable level and other sounds were perceptible again. He couldn’t yet hear Sue’s heartbeat, though that too would soon follow, he knew from experience, but at least he had regained some semblance of normality. Its not a fire , Sue he managed to tell her raising his head so that she could read the words on his lips. “It’s an attack. The school is under attack and we have to get everyone out.”

He sensed her arm there ready to help him rise and readily accepted it, his hands once more going to remove the his tie and unbutton his shirt as soon as he had got to his feet. “Guess this surprise is going to be a bit more dramatic than I wanted it to be “he told her as he started to reveal the red leather that lay beneath.” But in the present circumstances I don’t have the time to break it to you gently. I hope you can forgive me.”

The costume was all too familiar to anyone lived in New York , the double D clearly etched on to it leaving no room for error. The transformation, practiced so many times over the years took less than a minute, leaving a costumed vigilante in the place of the blind lawyer, the cane now similarly metamorphosed into the trademark billy club.

Only the mask was left to put on and complete the transition from man to devil. “This is what I was going to tell you Sue.” he said “This is who I am. This is what I do. And unfortunately” he pulled the mask carefully into place. “You’re about to see me in action”

Re: (Sue's room.) A memorable first date
Gentle eyes watched Matt carefully, full of concern that Matt couldn’t see but something told her he would know anyway. Yes, she was worried. Worried about him, the students, of the unknown world. But she wouldn’t panic. Couldn’t. Panicking could only make matters worse, what ever was happening. Levi was already worrying, urging her to respond to the danger, his muzzle rubbing her thigh as he whimpered. She wanted to comfort the canine, but right now Matt was her concern, uncertain if he was hurt or not. And she knew Levi wouldn’t leave her side now.

Its not a fire , Sue Her first feeling was relief. Not because it wasn’t a fire, but because he’d understood. Her eyes focused on his lips now, not daring to miss a single movement. For as that feeling of relief slowly relaxed through her body, so more confusion came to mind. There was an alarm. There was something, the canine companion she’d trust with her life was telling her that much. That for some reason, known to him or not, they had to get out, and now. And fear replaced the confusion as her experienced mind read those fateful words on Matt’s lips. “It’s an attack. The school is under attack and we have to get everyone out.” An attack? What sick minded person would attack a school? As soon as the question formed in her mind, so did the answer. There had been plenty of ‘anti-mutant’ protests. Friends of Humanity were the one which immediately came to the deaf woman’s mind. She remembered reading somewhere about some of their policies, and even the memory of it made her blood boil. Why was it, as soon as someone seemed different, people would rise up to defy them. It seemed to happen throughout history, no matter what. When people were left handed, at one time they had been cruelly taught to use their right hand, as using the left seemed to be pure evil. It happened with disabilities as well, apparently cursed or possessed they’d be outcast. Was what they did to mutants any different to that? But to threaten a school of children… no. She couldn’t get angry, that would serve no purpose. She couldn’t fight, but she could save her students.

Helping him up, her eyes remained on his lips, until his hands moved to his tie and she blinked, glancing for an instant, before back to his face as she wondered, if the school was under attack, why he still seemed to be loosing his tie. “Guess this surprise is going to be a bit more dramatic than I wanted it to be “ Surprised? Surely the topic of their former conversation could wait until after the evacuation? ” But in the present circumstances I don’t have the time to break it to you gently. I hope you can forgive me.” She blinked again. Her eyes concentrated on reading the intricate shapes his lips made to form each word, it was only the faint movement which hinted at the fact he was now undoing his shirt. Wait. What surprise and why on earth was he stripping now?

It was only when she let her eyes drop that some understanding came. At the same time it just seemed to offer even more questions for which there was no time. Lips parted, then closed again, taking in the sight, not of a half naked male as she’d partial expected and feared, but instead of a man in uniform, costume. A costume she knew only from the reports she’d seen, read. And even then, it seemed more like something out of a comic book that real life. But now he was standing in front of her. And all she could do was stare. It wasn’t until Levi nudged her leg again in desperation that her eyes caught the beginning of the costumed Matt’s words, slight movement, quickly pieced together by a distracted mind.

“This is what I was going to tell you Sue.” … “This is who I am. This is what I do. And unfortunately”... “You’re about to see me in action” Oddly, as the mask covered the handsome face of the man before her, one of her first, recognisable thoughts was of relief. At least, unlike some of those she’d seen, his mouth was left uncovered. In a time when it seemed half the world would like them dead, it came as no surprise that any which showed the slightest hint of powers beyond ‘natural’ would hide their faces. Slowly, it seemed like her mind started to work again. Like the shock had caused a cog to stop, but now, as some rationality came back, so the cog begun it’s work once more in unison with the rest. So. This was the ‘something to tell’. This was the warning that was worded as if to feel her heart with fear of something that would cause a true spanner in the works. Her previous thoughts over his secret ‘I am’ had caused something to tug in fear within her. How many words could follow those simple two words, words which could fill anyone with dread at the beginning of a possible relationship. And now, to find that the ‘I am’ was to be followed with the fact that he was the infamous DareDevil. She almost laughed. Not at him, but at the whole thing, a release from the stress. But again, it was Levi who reminded her, a nudge to the leg, still laying flat on the floor.

”At least you’re not married” She said finally, as if in after thought, her brain quickly turning full circle. There was an emergency at hand. Later. Her mind would cope with this later. And that was neither in a good nor bad fashion yet. It was just the realisation that at the moment, it didn’t matter what she thought. What mattered was…

”I have to get to my students.. the deaf ones.. they won’t hear the alarm” She said urgently. ”They’ll still be asleep. I have to get them out” If he could see her eyes, he’d see the determination in them, but no doubt would it show just as clearly in her voice. He hand finally lowered to soothe Levi slightly. Right now, she wasn’t thinking that Matt was DareDevil, but that she had an ally. Someone strong enough to help her reach those kids and get them out safely. To help all the students, when she couldn’t. What she could do was get them out, get them somewhere safe. She still had some rent placed on a flat. Until she could organise something better, it would do for this emergency. Her eyes remained fixed on Matt, waiting. Waiting for a response, or for something in her own mind to click it all into place she wasn’t sure. But she knew, they had to move. They had to get out. But not alone.

Re: (Sue's room.) A memorable first date
shamelessly god modded at the end.... feel free to smack him round the head... or ask me to edit 8)

......................................

Was it selfish? In this moment when an entire school was in danger! To be more afraid of the answer one woman would give him than of whatever waited for them on the other side of these, now decidedly unsafe doors? Probably it was! But then Matt couldn’t help it. Danger, such as it could be perceived by the alarm echoing out its strident call, was for him an accepted risk. A leitmotif of blood and violence that simply underscored his daily existence!

Letting someone get close though! Close enough to see who he really was. That was something else altogether. Matt had let many women into his bed. But he had let few enter his life. Only two in fact! And they were both dead. One had never found out about his secret existence. The other had found out too late.

In either case his double life had led to their downfall. Bullseye had killed them both. A bitter irony that wasn’t wasted on the blind lawyer. Maybe this was wrong. Trying to take someone else, albeit knowingly this time, into his world Maybe this was God giving him a sign. This alarm that filled his head! Telling him to let Sue go. That she would be better off without him.

And yet, although he believed in the existence of a supreme being! Although he knew how his behaviour looked in the eyes of the church. Nothing less than blasphemy! Taking vengeance into his own hands! Something to be condemned rather than applauded! Still, what he had with Sue, whatever it might prove to be, didn’t feel wrong. Just as what he accomplished as Daredevil didn’t feel wrong.

“Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12:19-21 If there was one text in the bible Matt knew by heart then it was that one. But did that preclude God using others as his agent? Sinners, certainly rather than saints! That much was clear in Matt’s case, at least, for he was far from being called to the cloisters. And yet in his own way too had dedicated his life to a cause he believed in with a devotion that was nothing short of fervent.

It was in his blood. The Irish! Forever torn between the policeman and the priest! Or the terrorist! And where did Daredevil stand in all of that confusion? Matt had acknowledged that long ago. Somewhere on a knife’s edge! Ready to fall at any moment. Clutching to anchors he didn’t deserve but which he needed all the same. Foggy and his impeachable sense of justice! Peter and the moral code that he had passed on and which had kept Matt from becoming all that he hated; another killer with a costume! All the people in his life whom he cared for and who in turn grounded him in some sense of much needed normality.

Sue could do that for him. That much he knew. Maybe though.. if he was very lucky… she could do far more. He had felt that tonight. The potential that this thing between them could grow to become something deep and meaningful. But for that it had to have the chance to put down roots. There had to be commitment on both sides. Even if it was just commitment to seeing where this could lead!

Their relationship should have been built one cautious step at a time, savouring each moment as they discovered each other and drew closer together. Except that he had learned the hard way that you couldn’t build anything worthwhile on deceit. And pretending that Matt Murdoch was only a blind lawyer was nothing less than a lie. So instead of one cautious step here he was asking Sue to take a leap of faith. To accept that part of him that he kept hidden and secret behind a devil’s mask.

Could she do it? Would she do it? Matt held his breath as he waited for her reply. He had felt the tension mount in her as he spoke. He had expected nothing less. What caught him by surprise however was the relief that flooded through her as she saw and recognised who and what he was. ”At least you’re not married” she said, her words leaving him stunned and silenced until the unbelievable truth set in bringing in its wake a smile that lit up Matt’s face like a sunrise.

He had told her his secret and it didn’t matter! It didn’t change the way she felt about him. About them That was so far beyond anything he could have hoped for that even the disaster going on around him couldn’t , for that one moment at least, impinge upon his sense of happiness.

Thankfully though one of them was still thinking straight. As Sue spoke again Matt forced himself to concentrate only on the situation at hand and the fate of those around him. ”I have to get to my students.. the deaf ones.. they won’t hear the alarm” Sue told him ”They’ll still be asleep. I have to get them out”

God she really was magnificent, Matt thought with another grin , this time one of admiration. All of this had been thrown at her out of the blue and yet here she was not only functioning but planning how best to help those in her charge. Maybe he had a reputation as a hero but she in her own way was no less a warrior.

And so he treated her as one, letting the words he wanted to say to the woman, take second place behind those he had to say to the team mate she had now become.

Of course. We’ll go get them right now. I have to make sure Lorne is Ok as well.” he told her, already moving towards the door but turning back so that she could read his lips. ” I’ll go ahead. You and Levi follow. I’ve tuned out the alarm so I can hear if any enemies are waiting for us. But I won’t have time to turn and explain what I hear so... If I hold my hand like this you stop!” He raised it in the universal gesture, palm vertically upwards. “Like this and you hit the floor.” Again the movement was clear and easy to read, the age old code of the soldier in dangerous territory.

"And if I do this “ Matt moved fast, catching her in his arms and kissing her hard upon the lips. ”Then it means we better both get through this intact. Because I intend to do it a whole lot more in the future”

Re: (Sue's room.) A memorable first date
By the side of the deaf teacher, Levi pressed his head softly into her leg, nuzzling and nudging it. Why was she standing there?! They had to get out. He whined in worry, even as a hand lowered to softly comfort him. It wasn’t just that he knew the alarm meant danger, but it was starting to hurt the canine’s sensitive hearing a little. He pawed gently at her leg, only pausing as Sue moved to follow Matt.

“Of course. We’ll go get them right now. I have to make sure Lorne is Ok as well.” She’d not met Lorne, but she had heard vaguely of the water bound mutant. It seemed they both had responsibilities to someone. And that was something which wasn’t based on any power but a trust, a bond.

” I’ll go ahead. You and Levi follow. I’ve tuned out the alarm so I can hear if any enemies are waiting for us. But I won’t have time to turn and explain what I hear so... If I hold my hand like this you stop!” Eyes flicked between his lips and the hand gesture, nodding more to herself than anything. She trusted in this situation for her canine companion to stay loyally by her side. She had glimpsed in his own normal behaviour that he could make things out better than your average sight debilitated person. And for that reason she knew his words were more than bravado.

“Like this and you hit the floor.” Again she nodded as her eyes flickered to his hand. She knew she couldn’t fight alongside anyone, she wasn’t foolish. But she could get them out, safe. There was a friend in New York, he had a place. Not huge, but enough space temporarily she was sure. All she had to do was get them out of here. She knew she wouldn’t be able to get every student, but she could find those who needed her now.

"And if I do this “ Her thoughts, her eyes hovering on his hand caused her to miss part of the words, and before anything could leave her lips, his were on her’s. Eyes widened for a moment, caught so totally by surprised, before blinking slowly, no chance to respond, her mind not thinking that quickly, before his lips left her’s, moving again, eyes almost lazily fixing upon them. ”Then it means we better both get through this intact. Because I intend to do it a whole lot more in the future” It took a moment before she realised she was holding her breath, letting it go slowly.

It seemed foolish, in a short moment of silence, well, no speech at least. She wasn’t a teenager, inexperienced to the ways of the world, a kiss stolen by a man she’d met only days ago it seemed. She was a grown woman, who had a history. And yet for a moment there was that slightly touch of excitement in her heart, which reminded her of high school days. And for a moment, the situation around them seemed unimportant. It was the suddenness of it, the seeming flow from urgency to the kiss. And yet his lips had said that, to him, the kiss had been just as urgent. She didn’t even realise the small smile which took her lips where such seriousness had been only moments before. Before something underlying came through those words, a realisation of the true danger they could be in. And yet still words seemed to escape her as she stood there for a moment.

”Then…” Her voice came as barely a whisper, watching the blind man before her, now dressed in a suit that many would recognise. ”We had better go as swiftly as possible” She just couldn’t find the words. It wasn’t that it was too swift. Just, with the current situation, a little unexpected. And her mind was trying to work through enough things that trying to find the right expression right then was impossible. But there was something in her voice, something she didn’t know, which gave away her otherwise silent pleasure at the kiss, as well as the slight pick up in her heart rate.

Without thinking a hand lifted to softly rest on his arm, before it dropped, a gentle touch, fleeting for good reason, for as much as she wished for that touch right now, for the feel of him, at the same time, she knew it could only be a short, stolen moment. They had to go. And rather than regretting the briefness of that moment, she took a joy from it, before letting it go so she could concentrate.

There is more than one way to be different in this world.
