Oh, I remember Dean Johnson from my one and only Squeeze gig in Hull in 98. I seem to remember him being pretty good. He managed to upset the audience by singing the opening lines of UTJ and subsitituting 'Humberside' for 'Clapham' (not a good move - East Yorkshire people have always hated the Humberside tag). Then I hear he did the same thing at a Paul Carrack gig at The Robin a few year ago by calling Bilston 'Dudley'. Oops. Maybe this is a regular theme at his gigs?? Didn't Chris Difford first come across him at one of his songwriting sessions in Devon?
I must admit to being one of the wait-in-the-bar types while the support acts are on. This is based on my experience of most supports being of the miserable, dreary git variety. The worst example was Carina Round at Glenn's Party shows in 2001, who was like Alanis Morissette on speed.
However, sometimes they're really good and it would have been a tragedy to have missed them. One chap at Widnes in 2001 was excellent. I told him so after the gig, but sadly he was so pissed I don't think he could understand what I was saying to him. Ah well.
