Supporting our troops Hay Buds, We may or may not share the same political views concerning the current war but I am sure we all support the men and women whom are serving in the military. Thousands of Americans are asking what they can do to show their support for service members, especially those serving overseas in this time of war. Below are Web sites for several organizations that are sponsoring programs for members of the Armed Forces overseas. Please note that this is not a spam message. All of the organizations listed are legitimate. Groups like the Red Cross, Dear Abby and the USO are very well known. This message is being posted as an informational reference. “PX Commissary Gift of Groceries" can help military families keep food on the table at home: The program, created through a business agreement with CertifiChecks Inc., allows anyone to purchase commissary gift certificates via the DeCA Web site www.commissaries.com or by calling a toll-free (U.S.A. only) number, 1-877-770-4438. Certificates are good in any of DeCA's 280 stores worldwide -- only authorized commissary shoppers can redeem them. Donate a calling card to help keep service members in touch with their families at Operation Uplink at www.operationuplink.org/ Send a greeting via e-mail through Operation Dear Abby at anyservicemember.navy.mil/ or www.OperationDearAbby.net Sign a virtual thank you card at the Defend America Web site at www.defendamerica.mil/nmam.html Donate to the United Service Organizations (USO) The USO is chartered by the Congress as a non-profit charitable corporation. It is not a part of the United States Government. It is endorsed by the President of the United States and the Department of Defense. Each President has been the Honorary Chairman of the USO since its inception. The USO mission is to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to uniformed military Personnel. The original intent of Congress—and enduring style of USO delivery—is to represent the American people by extending a "Touch of Home" to their military members. www.uso.org/pubs/8_18_23.cfm Make a donation to one of the military relief societies: Army Emergency Relief at www.aerhq.org/ Navy/Marine Relief Society at www.nmcrs.org/ Air Force Aid Society at www.afas.org/ Coast Guard Mutual Assistance at www.cgmahq.org/ Donate to “Operation USO Care Package" at www.usometrodc.org/care.html Support the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services at www.redcross.org/services/afes/ Volunteer at a VA Hospital www.va.gov/vetsday/ to honor veterans who bore the lamp of freedom in past conflicts. Support families whose loved ones are being treated at military and VA hospitals through a donation to the Fisher House at www.fisherhouse.org. Reach out to military families in your community, especially those with a loved one overseas. Please do not flood the military mail system with letters, cards, and gifts. The Defenselink Department, AnyService Member site and Headquarters Marine Corps cannot accept mailed items. The support and generosity of the American people has touched the lives of many of the service men and women who are deployed overseas. The links above are only suggestions on how you can help. There are many other ways you can help. You many even have some ideas of your own. Please forward these suggestions plus your own onto others so they may also help support our troops. Remember no matter how you feel about the war the men and women fighting it are our brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, friends, loved ones, class mates, co workers, neighbors. They deserve our support and need us now more than ever. “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country” John F Kennedy Thank you, CJ Gibson aka Rough Rider |

Other ways to support the troops
Keep in mind that "supporting the troops" need not mean supporting the war, or the government, or the President. I think the best way to support the troops now that the invasion is over is to end the occupation immediately, bring the troops home, and give the UN 100% control over the reconstruction process. No private oil profit allowed -- Iraq's oil must remain in the public sector to prevent greed from influencing politics.
