The Arrival of the New English Teacher
The sun shone on the smiling face of Elaina Griffin, Xavier Institute’s newest English teacher. The wind whipped Elaina’s hair this way and that as the radio blasted Evanescence throughout the interior of her one year old sapphire blue Mazda RX8. It was turning out to be a perfect day for the raven haired beauty’s trip upstate with the last of her things (all of which were piled up in her trunk and back seat).
Sure, things had been a bit crazy once she had accepted the job at Xavier’s; but what big relocation wouldn’t be? She had been teaching in Connecticut for just a short time before she realized how much pressure it was turning out to be to keep her mutant abilities a secret. She’d craved the freedom to teach English with the use of her powers to go into the story. To make the students see how stories really could come to life if only you read them would have been exhilarating, not to mention a bit dangerous for sharing her unique abilities. Let’s face it though, she’d only have been able to do it once and if any of the students had gotten hurt, then she’d have had to deal with a town wide mob scene all coming for her. No, it was good that she’d had the sense not to try that. She really liked all her body parts safe and whole, not to mention in the right places.
She was nearing Westchester now, getting closer and closer to her destination. Doubt nagged at the back of her mind. She hoped that she could settle in all nicely while starting to teach. She also hoped that she’d be able to make some friends quickly. She knew the original X-Men, having had them teach her when she was there as a teen herself. Would it be awkward to be working with these talented mutants under whom she was originally the student? Yep, it would definitely awkward. However, she had faith that she could get over that awkwardness very quickly.
As the school came into view, Elaina let out a small sigh. She stopped in front of the gate and dusted off some lint off of her blue jeans and straightened her stone poncho that gave her a cool chain mail effect over her red knit sleeveless turtleneck before identifying herself to the intercom to let her in. As she waited for the buzz in, she tucked a long strand of her raven tresses behind her ear. A minute passed and she was buzzed in, the gates opening automatically, allowing Elaina to drive on through and park out front.
A few minutes later and Elaina was standing at the front door with two suitcases in tow. Since she hadn't been given a key yet, she had to ring the door bell. Now, she waited for some nice soul to take pity on her and actually let her in...
I'm gonna make it in this new dimension!

The arrival of the new english teacher
Bryce
As Bryce and Talia climbed the grand staircase, the distinctive bong!! of the doorbell echoed through the entryway of the Xavier Institute. Hearing the bell, Bryce spun around in his heels and looked at the oak doors.
bong!! the door continued.
“Seems as though you have a rather impatient visitor,” The newly arrived mutant remarked to Talia, before setting his luggage down on the stairs. “I’ll get it for you.” He said, quickly descending the stairs and crossing the entryway. Straightening his jacket, Bryce placed his shield covered hands on the doorknobs before swinging one open. Stepping back upon seeing the raven haired beauty, Bryce smiled broadly.
“Welcome to the Xavier Institute. Please no questions I just arrived myself,” he joked, before seeing Elaina’s pair of suitcases sitting beside her, “Ahh, let me get those for you.” He said quickly picking up the suitcases and stepping back into the entryway.
“Ah, how rude of me, please come in. I am Bryce Frost-Shaw and that lovely lady up on the stairs is Talia Wagner,” Bryce continued flipping his head sideways to force a few strands of rogue hair out of his face.
Once Elaina entered the entryway Bryce pushed the front door shut with his foot., and started back to where he had dropped his luggage, realizing that there was now far to much luggage for him to carry with his two hands. Edited by: Fengal at: 6/20/05 5:18 pm

The arrival of the new english teacher
Steps was walking , slow and painful , slow and painful . He had ripped orange shorts on and a tattered white t-shirt . His arm hung at his sides the way a tired coal miners do , on that slow and pain , slow and painful , walk home . His saunter was not in vain , he had been walking with out food , or water for days and days . Trying to find Doctor Xaiver . He couldn't even recall how long ago he had jotted down the school's name from a T.V. report . His pure white skin shone in light , and long , purple flames sprouting from his fingers dragged along the ground , ten scorch marks were left from where they had been . Those scorches went on for miles . He was past the point of caring . His leg was bleeding again , and his energy was fading . Tiny stars flicked in front of his eyes . Slow and painful , Slow and painful . Finally he found his pith and repenthy . It was in a well manicured lawn , and old brick . He emerged from the forest to find himself at the front gate of the school he had asked directions for over the telephone so many times . The gate opened and he walked through , slow and painful , slow and painful .
Heaven
You are going to burn this paradise down Steps
Shut up
He stumbled , and wandered through the grass and hedges , and past the fountains . None of that mattered . He needed a cure , he needed Xavier . Every step that hit the ground sent shock waves up his already weakened legs . Vomit , or tears , or blood or something wet was trickling down his face . As he approached the entrance , his long snake-like flames tensed , and thickened , lashing out like whips at nearby objects , most of all the automated security system that was trying to fire on step . He set a bush on fire , and turned a gray statue black in the unknown process . Red liquid fire was whipping around like doors of hell were opened . Twenty feet from the door .
Step
Step
Step
Ten feet from the door , five , four , three . Steps saw people before , him . He sighed a deep sigh , a voice in his head screaming at him .
Kill them now , Steps kill them all , Steps kill them all !
Steps lacked the ability to tell whether he was thinking or speaking , or just drifting . His pure white skin , and snow white pupil-less eyes were angelic , but behind it was a monster . Steps knew he needed help , or something . Words leaked out of his lips , rather than being spoken . They just dribbled out onto the pavement along with the blood , and sweat , and pain .
" No , Xavier ... "
His white eyes rolled up into the black of his head , revealing red veins and more white , his white tongue was bitten down on , hard , blood seeped out , and Steps fainted . Weeks worth of walking , sleep-less nights , and pain , caught up with him . His head sounded aloud with a sharp crack as it hit the stone steps to the school . Edited by: Fengal at: 6/20/05 5:20 pm

The arrival of the new english teacher Bryce
Just as Bryce was about to attempt to juggle the suitcases, he heard a soft almost silent thud outside the closed doors of the institute. Bryce had heard thuds like that before, it was the sound of a body falling. Spinning around Bryce stared at the doors, ready for something to crash through them to attack him. He should have expected his mother to react in such an insane manor. There was no way she would just let him leave, was there?
After waiting for several seconds and still nothing broke through the doors, Bryce stood up straight and held his hand up, gesturing for the two female mutants to stay at the stairs.
“I think there is yet another arrival,” Bryce said as he carefully made his way down the staircase. Crossing stone entry way yet again, Bryce placed one hand on the metal doorknob, leaving the second ready to release a force blast incase the newcomer was dangerous.
‘Maybe I shouldn’t be the one to answer the doors yet, I did just get here,’ He thought before pulling open the door.
As the door swung open a red whip-like flame shot through the crack and smacked Bryce in the throat, sending him flying several feet back.
“I knew it, she just couldn’t let me go!” Bryce mumbled to himself as he stood back up, his force field protecting him from any harm. Running back toward the door, Bryce dove outside grabbing hold of Step on his way out. Upon hitting ground, Bryce quickly flipped Step over onto the ground and held him, ignoring the smacks of red energy hitting him.
“Crawl back to Emma and tell her that…” Bryce started before realizing the male beneath him had passed out and was covered in old blood, vomit and sweat.
“Oh crap!” was all Bryce could say as he jumped off the mutant and reached down to pick him up. The blood was old, too old to have been caused my Bryce’s attack; Bryce thought as he ran back to the mansion with Step over his shoulders in a fireman position. The other mutant was only slightly lighter than Bryce but his well developed muscles and adrenaline allowed the White Prince to carry the unconscious mutant without much trouble.
“Quick, he needs a doctor where’s the medical lab?” Bryce asked Talia and Elaina as he entered the mansion Edited by: Fengal at: 6/20/05 5:22 pm

The arrival of the new english teacher Hank (sorry There are someposts still missing here but its the best I can do.)
Dr McCoy The urgent words came over his com badge, disturbing his train of though * Damn What now* The Doctor rubbed his eyes tiredly his voice still tinged with annoyance despite his efforts to hide it as he answered “Yes? What is it?”Surely not more injured. The last few days had pushed the lab and Hank himself to his limits. He wasn’t sure they could take much more. *Of course we can * he thought resignedly * We just have to don’t we*
Apparently the student currently on security watch had caught the underlying tone, his own voice apologetic and uncertain as he continued. ”Im sorry Doctor but we have a situation here and I admit I don’t know what to do on this one.” “That’s Ok” McCoy answered moving swiftly over to the computer monitor and logging in to the security program. "Thats what I’m here for. Patch me in please.” The blues furred mutant felt his breath catch in his throat as he saw the scene play out before him. Yes That could indeed be called a situation and a problematic one at that.
Stumbling, unsteady, but nevertheless intent in his progression a young man was approaching the manor, a trail of writhing tendrils following him like so much acid pouring uncontrolled from his fingertips. Danger radiated from him, danger to the school, danger to the students that the Institute was meant to protect and yet…. Overriding everything else there was a sense of dire need that flowed from him as intense in its way as the deadly snakes of flame that he dragged in his wake. He had the look of one who had been to hell or rather of one who carried their own personal hell around with them every day.
Blood, dirt, vomit, the air of mind numbing desperation, all clung to the white skinned figure as he shambled towards the Institute seeking what? Sanctuary or revenge for some unknown wrong that he fancied they had visited upon him? That was the question. It always was when you came right down to it.* What do I do now?* Hank thought to himself *Shut the doors and risk rejecting someone who came here seeking help or let him enter and risk the lives of all those already here?* He could understand why the students hadn’t felt capable of making the call themselves. *Indeed it shows a certain maturity on their part that they did not just lock him out and for that they should be commended. It seems that they have embraced basic precepts of the Institute. And basically that is what we must all do in the end no matter what the danger. *
“Thank you. You did well to bring this to my attention .” he told the security team” Now you have my authority to let him enter. I repeat keep the gates open but do not try to intercept.” Swiftly he accessed the com badge network, glad that the problem had arisen when most, if not all of the pupils were in class, sending out a message to all members of the teaching staff “Please do not let the pupils out of the classrooms till further notice. There is a controlled incident in the front hall ” *That should take care of the immediate danger, till I can get down there with some help.* he thought, already searching through the com badge relay to see who was in the vicinity and ready to intervene.
*Why then have I the feeling that there is something I have overlooked?* A welcome name flashed onto the screen Talia. Of course! He had released her from her duties in med lab, feeling that she, like him, had spent too much time there over the last few days. It had pleased him that she who was so usually reserved had volunteered to go and greet the new arrivals……
And there it was The missing factor. New arrivals. * Don’t let them be there yet* the doctor prayed but already he could see that the prayer was in vain There they were signalled on the security read out. Bryce Frost-Shaw, Miss Elaina Griffin. Both safely arrived at the Institute. Safely for the moment that was. Panning in on the cameras that covered the front entrance he could see the inevitable altercation without being able to intervene. Would his decision cost the Frost boy his life? He held his breath as the fiery whips closed round Bryce’s seemingly defenceless body.
It appeared however that the gods had been listening after all. Miraculously the deadly strands beat uselessly against the young mans form even when he picked up the now fallen mutant and carried him back into the mansion. “Quick, he needs a doctor where’s the medical lab?” Hank heard him say as he felt relief wash through him. Now it was down to Talia. Hank had little doubt that she would know how to handle the situation. Shy she might be but she was a first class nurse and knew better than anyone else where to take such a difficult patient. Therefore it came as no surprise when scant moments later he heard her voice over the com badge
"Dr McCoy, zere is a problem down in ze Advanced Medical room, ve have a visitor, his is definitely malnourished und dehydrated, currently unconscious, but ze male’s mutancy makes it difficult for me to get close to him."
“I am aware of the situation Talia” he replied. “Just keep him calm till I get there. And don’t take any risks. Ill be right down.” Edited by: Fengal at: 6/20/05 5:28 pm

Re: Unknown‘Ryan seems like a nice guy,’ thought Elaina as he helped her bring some more stuff from her car to her room, 'He certainly doesn’t have to help me take everything to my room.’ The thoughtful brunette was actually enjoying his company very much so. He had told her about his little girl with love in his eyes and she had told him about her niece who seemed to be around the same age as her. They were just heading for another load right about then.
“I’m afraid that I have way too many books,” she said with a grin, “I didn’t realize how many I had until I had to start packing. I only took my favorites though. Those and the ones I knew I’d need to teach English Lit around here.”
Ahhh, books. What could she say? They had been her own best friends while she grew up in a household of five. Sometimes she just needed to get away from all the fighting that she and her sisters did. So, she would curl up in her room and read whenever she could. Some nights, she would stay up until the wee hours in the morning if the book had gotten to an exciting part or if she was close to the end.
So, when her powers had emerged, she had been thrilled to say the least. Not only could she read the stories she loved, she could now visit them. The Griffin Sisters had actually gotten into a few binds at some points, but they had all three shined when they really got the hang of the stories. Her middle sister, Alina, was the only one who never actually took as much delight in entering the stories as her other two sisters. That was okay, though. Elaina understood how scary new worlds could be to the less adventurous. It was like she said, “You’ve got to be willing to enter new worlds, to enjoy it.”
“So, if you don’t mind me asking,” she started with a smile as she grabbed another box from her car, “What exactly is your mutant power?” The English Lit teacher usually avoided this question, but she felt unusually comfortable with Ryan. He seemed like the type that would be okay with this type of question so soon. At least, she hoped he was okay with her asking it so soon after meeting her!

Re: Unknown
The task of bringing bags to Elaina's room required heavy lifting and, while Ryan was in decent shape, he wasn't often required to lift more than his daughter up on his shoulder and even that occured less and less lately. Lily-Rose was growing up, as much as he sometimes hated to admit it. He hardly minded lifting the bags for her though. In fact it was probably good for him to converse with another adult since he did that far too seldom lately and the conversations he did have were rarely so light-hearted. He was used to worrying about his daughter or asking about his class plans, not just talking like this.
Ryan had enjoyed hearing about her niece and she hadn't seemed to mind hearing about his daughter. It was a welcome change for the father who talked far too often about the sunshine in his life to his peers. They were polite of course because they knew what he had gone through and that she was all he had left. Yet it was mostly politeness, not a genuine caring and desire to hear about the girl. He enjoyed talking about children. He lived to be a father and to discuss children with Elaina was proving a joy.
“I’m afraid that I have way too many books,” Elaina said, grinning. “I didn’t realize how many I had until I had to start packing. I only took my favorites though. Those and the ones I knew I’d need to teach English Lit around here.” This made a real smile creep across the often cautious and worried face of Ryan Warner. She had a passion for books that evidently matched his own and he appreciated that. He also picked out of her previous statement the mention of teaching English Lit here which meant that they would probably be spending a great deal of time in close quarters since he also was teaching english classes, although Ryan was just easing into being a teacher and having a real life again.
“So, if you don’t mind me asking,” Elaina began and Ryan wondered what kind of a question he was about to get. Anything about books, his daughter or generally were fair game but irrationally he feared that she had heard about his personal tragedy and was going to ask about it. He had always feared someone bringing it up and him regressing back to that time in his life. However, as it turned out, he needn't of worried for the question was simple enough. Ryan didn't realise that for some of the mutants at the institute the question was dreaded just as he dreaded anything relating to the anti-mutant group that had taken his wife from him. For him though the question was natural and provided no angst. He grabbed another box from her car, waiting for the question to come down.
“What exactly is your mutant power?” An undetected sigh of relief from Ryan at this innocent question. Usually he went under a don't ask, don't tell policy whereby if a person didn't tell him freely than he didn't ask or tell them his own abilities. However with Elaina things seemed different and when powers were book related, as his were, and he was talking to a woman who obviously adored the objects it didn't feel so wrong at all.
"Actually it's quite appropriate," Ryan replied, cracking another smile as he adjusted his hold on the box. "I can summon literary characters forth. They're solid for the time being and have the personalities they do within they're novels." Ryan remembered the look of pure joy on Lily-Rose's face as she met Mr. Tumnus and the time when she has watched Pan change shapes on Lyra's shoulder as the fictional older girl seized up Lily-Rose.
"It's a good power for teaching books and for having a curious seven-year-old to read bedtime stories to," he continued. At that point in time the thirty-two year-old realized that he hadn't asked Elaina about her abilities and his curiousity was certainly peaked. "So what is your power then Elaina?"
Re: Unknown“Looks like we have a lot in common,” the lovely literature teacher said with a grin, “I can open portals into the worlds of stories. It made growing up interesting for my sisters and I.” Boy, was that an understatement! Elaina and her sisters already had a little knack for trouble and introducing that knack to a whole new world would almost always guarantee a little adventure.
“Recently, I’ve found that I can possess characters within the stories,” she said, a bit slowly, “I haven’t been able to control who I posses yet, but it is a work in progress.”
The ebony-haired beauty wasn’t about to alarm Ryan with the news that ‘oh yeah, they started to possess me too’. That would be awkward. It had freaked her out when she had been possessed that first time. Nimue had been a villain in her story, having been the oldest daughter of a very powerful lord. She was not used to being told no. When Nimue had taken over her body, she had literally taken Elaina’s body hostage. Nimue had decided to explore this new world where technology ran rampant and the old ways were forgotten. It wasn’t until Elaina had seen her youngest sister, Jenna, that she had really started winning the fight for her own body. It wasn’t until then that Elaina had considered going back to Xavier’s.
Now that she was here though, she was glad she had made this decision. True, she hadn’t had much choice, but at least she knew she was surrounded by those who knew how to contain the problem should it happen again. However, there might arise the problem of people questioning whether or not she’s really who she is. It was one of the things that bothered her about this new aspect of her mutant powers.
It was about that time that they had made it up to her room once again. She put her boxes in a corner and looked around for a moment, glad that they had only one more trip. She would be able to re-park her car then.
“Thanks again for helping me with these boxes,” she said with a warm smile, “Only one more trip, I believe and then we’ll be done.”

Re: Unknown
He watched as Elaina's face lit up in a grin. “Looks like we have a lot in common,” she said and Ryan's warm brown eyes were questionning. Besides the interest in books they seemed to share he couldn't see how they had alot in common. Then Elaina told him her powers.
“I can open portals into the worlds of stories. It made growing up interesting for my sisters and I.” Ryan Warner grinned at this and, for the outsider, this was a rare expression. He hadn't smiled very much since the death of his wife. Sure when Lily showed off a drawing of hers or when she begged him to tell her a story he couldn't help but smile but it was only Lily who made him happy. Since Mandy Lynn he hadn't had a close friend or a romantic interest of any kind. All he had were his daughter and a few of his collegues here at the school.
He thought back to college and how he had told Mandy stories by bringing the characters to life before her eyes. Meanwhile plants had sprouted up around her, pink flowers blossoming in the grassy park although she wasn't even focusing on using her green thumb talent. Then Ryan thought of his daughter again. How Lily loved his stories. She had taken, naturally, to Watership Down once the furry Hazel had narrated the novel to her. But Elaina's powers were different. She could venture into the world of her stories which, he assumed, posed somesort of a danger to those inside the story and yet the wonder at actually seeing the lamppost or the Caer Dullben, surely nothing could match that. The older man shook his head in disbelief. It was quite the coincidence that he had just happened to come across Elaina and that their powers were so similar. It was the sort of thing that returned some of the faith Ryan had lost after the incident.
“Recently, I’ve found that I can possess characters within the stories,” Elaine continued slowly. To possess a character, to be within their bodies and minds. It was facinating to Ryan who looked on with a new spark of interest in his mocha eyes. “I haven’t been able to control who I posses yet," Elaina added, "but it is a work in progress.” He nodded slowly, trying to imagine what would happen if she had tried to possess one of the children in Narnia and had instead ended up as the witch or worse, trying to get inside Tom Ripley's head only to wind up one of his victims. It was a thought as frightening as it was facinating.
He watched as she put her boxes in a corner and looked around. They seemed almost to be done and indeed Elaina said as much a moment later. “Thanks again for helping me with these boxes,” she said, smiling at him. “Only one more trip, I believe and then we’ll be done.”
Ryan nodded and smiled back, a genuine smile if not to bright as hers. If she had really known him she would have known it was a revolution just for him to smile in such a way at a near stranger. "Oh, no problem," Ryan replied in his soft-spoken way. "I don't mind." She had just told him so much information about these powers of hers and he had so much questions and desires to hear about her experiences with them. Ryan had met a great many mutants, at least in passing, but never one with powers resembling his own. Elaina was that one.
He hesitated before continuing onwards, letting Elaina take the lead in the last of their box trips. "I've never met anyone with powers like mine before," the father admitted. His interest was certainly peaked by the new English teacher who seemed so like him in some ways.
"You can actually see the lamppost then?" Ryan asked, trusting that Elaina would know what he was talking about. Narnia was a favourite of his daughter's. "And this possession of characters sounds dangerous but facinating. I'd love to hear more." Had Ryan been close to a rather sarcastic friend they would most certainly have made some exclaimation along the lines of 'Hallelujah'. It was one of few times that Ryan had willingly extended the conversation, giving an openning for further talk between himself and another. It was an example of how quickly he had taken to Elaina already and of how their interests meshed. "Do you use your abilities in your teaching?" Ryan asked, genuinely interested since he had begun teaching himself just recently.
Re: Unknown"I've never met anyone with powers like mine before,", said Ryan as they made their way back down the stairs. 'It really is nice to meet someone with powers like mine,' she thought to herself, knowing that it was an understatement, to say the least. Elaina had always wondered what it would be like to meet someone with powers even remotely resembling her's and here he was. In the flesh. Helping her move the last of her stuff. Well, if that isn't fate, she didn't know what was!
"You can actually see the lamppost then?" was Ryan's next question. A grin lit the ebony-haired teacher's face as she remembered her sisters' reactions to Narnia. Alina had refused to go back to that book...Really, stopped going all together. Aslan scared her to death.
"Actually went with my sisters," she said cheerily, "Alina didn't want to go on anymore excursions because of that one. The thought of running into Aslan scared her too much!" She really actually wanted to meet Aslan. However, Alina demanded to go back that instant after seeing the lamppost and a faun.
"Jenna wanted to cut it down and take it home, but she didn't really understand that it had to stay. She was pretty young on that trip," she said, then shook her head as she grabbed the next to last box, "Alina felt we were playing in her words. She wanted to grow up too fast."
The box was not too heavy, not too light. At least, for her. Being a school teacher, you learned to lift heavy things or you got a friend or nice parent to help. Teachers tend to be resourceful that way.
"Don't let your little girl get the notion to grow up too fast," she said with a grin as she remembered her girlhood, "Because once they get it in their heads, it is hard to stop them!"
Really, Elaina had quite the opposite reaction. She wanted to be like Peter Pan and never grow up. However, she also saw what fun there could be to grow up. However, that was only after she hit puberty.
"And this possession of characters sounds dangerous but facinating. I'd love to hear more." It was true that the lovely book-lover had been excited when she discovered this power initially. However, since her last incident, she was a bit weary about it.
"It is quite interesting," she said cautiously, "However, I would like to study it more here before I can fully enjoy it." That and she wanted to find a way to make sure that no more of the characters could possess her any time soon.
"Do you use your abilities in your teaching?" The thought had occurred to her many times, but she never dared to utilize her abilities at her own school. Even if she could, they would probably have made her give out permission slips and promise that it would be completely safe. No, that was too much of a risk for the public school system.
"I never really was able to use it in the classroom," she said as they finished going up the stairs and headed to her room for this final trip, "Honestly, I might need to reserve that for an advanced course while I teach here. The worlds of stories can be dangerous. Especially since I don't always know at what point in the stories I'll open a portal too."
A few more minutes and they were setting down their boxes again. This being the last of them, Elaina mockingly wiped the sweat from her brow with a smile. "What about you? Do you use your powers in the classroom much?"
