The Beauty Within
The light today was perfect. Everything that a photographer could ever hope for in fact! For once Crystal decided that would enough. For once she would let that make her happy. No distractions. No problems she was incapable of solving. Just one day in the long progression of days in front of her when she could concentrate on doing what she loved. Capturing moments that would otherwise be lost! Showing something that surely would have remained hidden unless the cameras lens shone its light on it.!

It was what she had always wanted to do. And she did it well. Not as well perhaps as she could have if she had been able to continue her studies but still….. She had a natural talent that went a long way to making up for any lapses in technique she might have had. Crystal smiled as she looked around the grounds of the Xavier Institute. They were beautiful enough on their own terms to merit being photographed. Thought that was not what she intended to turn her camera on today.

Ever since the day she had first picked up a camera Crystal had known that the old adage ‘one picture is worth a thousand words’ was nothing but the strictest truth. There was something about a photo that instantly grabbed the attention, making things real and immediate in a way that words sometimes struggled to do. It was what had attracted her to photography in the first place. The knowledge that if she was good enough her own photos could one day touch people’s emotions like that. That maybe her vision could open the eyes of others to truths they didn’t want to face or beauty they hadn’t realised existed.

Still, despite all her grand plans, photography, just like the rest of her life, had taken a back seat since she had become her sister’s guardian. Nowadays the photos she took were just a means of putting food on the table rather than the art she had always believed they could become. Indeed with Dark Ambers more frequent appearances and increasingly cruel behaviour it was a miracle Crystal’s work hadn’t deteriorated to the point of no return as the stress took its toll on her already shattered nerves. Then again her camera was and always had been, her lifeline in a world that most of the time felt as if it was spiralling out of control.

No, while she had struggled alone with her sisters condition there was no way she could even remotely have concentrated on her work. Now though….. Crystal sighed.. While the Institute hadn’t provided Amber with the instant cure her sister had been praying for it had at least given them two things they desperately needed. Hope and safety!

Just to know that there were other people, qualified people around now to watch out for Amber was relief beyond words. Even if her insidious power sometimes caught them off guard too! With a mental shake Crystal forced herself not to think of how close they had come to disaster the morning Amber had made her surprise visit to the kitchen. That wasn’t something she wanted to dwell on because, like it or not, the Institute was the closest thing they had found to a safe haven. And without a safe haven she wasn’t sure how much longer either of them would last.Besides… This place had given her more than refuge. It had, she now realised, also given her purpose.

Had anyone ever looked upon this particular subject sympathetically, she wondered as she prepared to take yet another series of photos? Somehow she doubted it. Not that coverage had been lacking. In newspapers…a different media as far as she was concerned, she had seen more than enough pictures Some for , some against Usually accompanying some sensational headline .None of them leaving people indifferent, that much was sure. But none of them taken in ideal circumstances either! Or at east not in the circumstances she wanted to take them.

Mutants! Until recently Crystal had never frequented them. Unless you included her sister that was and Amber was sadly far from being a favourable advertisement for these very different people. Still wasn’t the unusual something that a photographer was supposed to seek out? And here at the Institute the unusual was all around her.

Except that once you got right down to it these so called supermen were all to human. Oh they had powers alright. That much couldn’t be denied. But, Crystal was all too well placed herself to know that those powers weren’t always a blessing. What really mattered, she now saw, wasn’t the genetic marker that set these students apart from the rest of the world! It was instead their intrinsic humanity. Feelings didn’t just disappear when you suddenly realised you could shrink down to the size of a pea. Nor did the fact you had fangs and claws make you any less of a humanitarian

A photographer, by his very trade, dealt in appearances. A good photographer though…he could make you see what he saw. The lover who lay behind the features of the beast ! The nurse whose caring nature shone through her demonic appearance! Those were only some of the things Crystal had glimpsed since she had been here. Triumph and sorrow! Loss and gain! Everything here was extreme or so it seemed! How could it not be given her subject matter?

There was so much beauty here waiting to be discovered, waiting to be revealed that Crystal didn’t know where to start. Not today anyway. But that didn’t matter. Today she realised she could take her time. Because deep down inside Crystal knew that she had already started. There were photos in her camera waiting to be developed that were good. Better than good. They were true, and meaningful and beautiful. They would do what she had wanted them to do. They would touch others of that she was sure. And that was all she could ask of them.

Re: The Beauty Within
There was a certain flaw with blissful ignorance… originally, see, Connor figured it would not hurt as much if Racheal merely left, giving no warning and no chance for him to be made the fool as attempts of getting her to reconsider the choice he believed the other had already made. One side of Logan’s son could understand the prospect of leaving, even Logan had feared the possibility every time something went wrong, like just earlier, when Connor walked away and Logan made him promise not to leave the institute. Right now Connor had no idea where he would even go, to be honest all that drove the young feral away merely was the stress of all the things still knew and confusing, the awkward feelings he got around people at times, or the loss of control he felt when thrown in a situation he apparently knew well but couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

The only things that really tied Connor right now were few, and they weren’t items or things, they were the people, his sisters, Chris who loved it here, and Logan who was trying so hard. That made mornings and nights worth something, it gave Connor comfort to know generally every morning or night in that apartment he knew he could find Chris, and any one else who didn’t have other plans. Other people had introduced themselves to Connor, teachers and students alike, well wishers and actual friends, everyone from the teams knew he had been taken, and soon his lack of memory spread through the school as gossip so readily did. The only freedom from expectations Connor had though, in truth, were from Chris … and Racheal. And Chris was great, nothing in the world would make Connor wish to change the boy for anything… yet in the end Chris was exactly that, a boy, a child who needed to laugh and play, who needed Connor to be strong for him and supportive. The role of ‘Big Brother’ was a trait so burned into Connor growing up that mixed with his own protective nature, Logan’s son had become the glue between sisters, the only reason at times they would come together. He would yell at them, and get angry and frustrated, but in the end, they were his sisters, and he loved them, and even with Connor’s amnesia he could see that in the photos he had taken, in the way they looked at him, talked to him, it all felt so right to be there. But in the end, Connor was the eldest, and they were family, and sometimes you just needed someone outside of the family who you trusted enough to talk with, and for this bright blue-eyed feral, Racheal had become that somebody.

There was so much happening, the arguments with his family, the stress in class, it was all so hard sometimes. There seemed this anger inside that came out so willingly and sometimes Connor lashed out before he realized what he really was saying.

You don’t get the right to say things like that to me and then just waltz off.

Logan’s earlier words echoed in Connor’s mind briefly, walking off sounded like bad habit Connor had developed somewhere in his life, and memories or no memories he was still doing it! He walked away from his dad this morning and now from Racheal! "Faults and all…?" Connor whispered doubtfully to no one in particular as he moved further from the lake and towards the school, hands frustrated and trying to find something to do and so proceeded to smoothen out the creases of his top.

Why don’t you go clean something?

Now it appeared Madison’s retort haunted Connor’s mind, and the upset that caused was enough to stress the feral out once more as he forced his hands to drop away to his side. There was too much going on, he had told his father that earlier, worries about Chris, school, life, self doubt, confusions, arguments, this was all too much! For a moment Connor found himself ready to burst from the overload, no matter where he turned, it didn’t help, just more problems came to air! If only Connor had some place he could go, some escape he knew was safe and out of the way… what annoyed the feral was he probably did, just like with so many other things however, he couldn’t remember. The frustration blinded him to most of what else was going on in the grounds, which meant it was only the brief glint of Crystal’s camera lense as he passed that even remotely caught the feral’s attention, and then his confused apology that followed swiftly after.

"Oh, sorry… I didn’t see you," While awkward in expression, Connor’s movements were fluid as he shifted out of her way, "I hope I didn’t ruin…" Connor began, looking over to where her camera had been pointed beyond him, though admittedly he couldn’t really see what would have bee the focus, "…whatever you were going for," Assumptions weren’t always correct when it came to someone taking shots… after all, what one person saw with their eyes wasn’t what someone else would see. Though, as Connor looked back at the slightly older woman, he couldn’t help but notice her camera put his to shame… she probably was working on something for the school itself, or doing a project maybe for an advance class… in any case, Connor was about ready to continue on, expecting her to brush aside his interference and continue on as she had been doing before he interrupted her shot.

Re: The Beauty Within
sorry.. cant get crystals accoubt to work.. must be ding something wrong.. anyway..

....................................

Sometimes the really great shots came when you least expected them. Oh it was true, you could spend an entire day in a studio , setting up expensive lighting equipment and all sorts of other gadgets , in the hope of recreating the perfect moment and come out hopefully with a beautiful picture. That would be all it was, though. Beautiful! Commercial certainly, but in the end merely a fabrication! An imitation of life! And like all imitations, it could never match up to the real thing.

Crystal had come out to the grounds of the Institute looking for life. Looking for faces that would catch the imagination and perhaps even the hearts of those who saw them! She hadn’t expected to find one so soon though. It was true that at first glance the young man walking towards her had seemed unremarkable. Well no, that was actually far from being true. Through the cameras eye, Crystal had seen at once that he was more than handsome enough to be a model and if she had been looking for a conventional picture then she could have done far worse than ask him to pose for her.

The beauty she was after though wasn’t conventional by any means, so she would have let him pass her, regretfully perhaps, if he hadn’t chosen that moment to look up, not at her, not at anything, but with such a mixed expression of vulnerability and strength in his suddenly revealed mutant eyes, that she couldn’t help but click the shutter.

Had she caught it? She didn’t know. But if she had it would be a powerful image, that much was certain. Though one she knew she had no right to ever show without his permission.

Maybe those so called primitive cultures who thought that camera’s could capture your soul hadn’t been so far off the mark. They could certainly see what you maybe didn’t want seen. And their blessing, or their curse , was that they could reveal it to others. Would this stranger though really want that moment of worried contemplation exposed in public?

Not that he even knew he had been the subject of her photo. Indeed he was all apologies for ruining some hypothetical landscape shot she might have been taking, his unnatural grace more than apparent to someone now looking out for mutant powers as he glided out of her supposed field of vision.

She could have let him go. She could have simply smiled and kept and maybe even used this shot, along with all the others, to prove what she already knew. That you could use the term ‘homos superiors ‘ all you liked. In the end though these students, these young people, these mutants, were as human as anyone else! They had their own joys and pains! They bore burdens that were in many cases harder than any of the so called 'normal' people of the world could ever imagine. And from what she had seen, for the most part, they did it with courage and humour and a quiet dignity that couldn’t fail to impress.

Which was why, of course she could never have simply let him go! “You didn’t ruin anything “ she told him with a smile that faded quickly before her obviously sincere concern . “In fact..it was you I was photographing. Crystal admitted with a sigh I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t have … but it was…you know.. one of those perfect shots. She looked towards him hoping for understanding, though she knew the odds that he would know what meant were long to say the least. .

I won’t use it though.’ the young blond hurried to reassure him. Not unless you tell me I can. Not even if it’s as good as I think it is. Though.. if it is.. and if you said yes.. then it would be exactly what I was trying for. It would be a revelation”
