The Future of LEXX????
Okay Lexxians, here's a question I'll just throw out there to see just how devoted everyone really is. Are most people here only interested in what has already been done, or does anyone ever pine for the possibility of more LEXX? What would be more appealing to you if somehow Michael chose not to reprise his role as Kai?
1)Curling up with all 4 seasons and movies of LEXX and saying to hell with more LEXX. If Michael ain't in it I'm not interested?
2)finding out they've begun work on a season 5 TV show (without Kai)?
3)finding out they've started filming a movie continuation after season 4 with the entire LEXX cast (without Kai)?
4)finding out they've started filming a movie with the entire cast (and with a new person playing Kai who looks very similar and is also sexy)?
5)finding out they've started filming a movie about the Insect Wars with the entire cast (except Michael)and it is obviously set in the past, so it introduces new Brunnens?
6)finding out they've started filming a movie about the Insect Wars with the entire cast(except Michael, but a new guy is playing Kai who is also sexy)?
Interesting conundrum, huh? Just how pivotal is Michael to LEXX? (realizing this is a site for fans of Michael, but noting that he might not wish to reprise his so coveted role) So here's the real point of this exercise. Those who love Michael/Kai, could LEXX go on without him? Or should it remain dead forever, just like our sexy coiffed hero?
I'm not saying any plans are in the works, but if there were, what would you most like to have happen in the event Michael shuns the role? Just curious...
Personally I would rather the series stay as it was. I know that Paul wanted the series to actually wrap up all loose ends and he did that to just about everyone's satisfaction. It's not as if it was cancelled by Scifi or something with the season half way over. I think that everyone in the cast and crew was happy with the way it ended and that trying to resurrect the same premise with out without McManus (who would probably not want to reprises his role as Kai, considering he's the one who lobbied for it to end at Season 4), would be redundant.
If you want to continue some kind of Lexx story, have a spin -off, possibly from the point of view of another character, like Bunny or Prince.
As for the movie idea, I know everyone drooled at the idea of a film after seeing how successful Serenity was at the box office, BUT, we didn't have Joss Whedon at our beck and call, he of the magic spin-offs of Buffy and Firefly.
The biggest problem is this:
Revenue;
Lexx was never or is not ever going to be profitable.
It made a few bucks for Paul D, but overall the ratings were not what they hoped, the dvds didnt' sell like they thought and THAT'S the main reason why someone would bring back a show. NOT because a few dozen die-hard fans want to see it renewed. I think we caught lightning in the bottle the first time around, let's not @#%$ with perfection just to fulfil some fantasy of Lexx returing..

oh man this topic has been discussed until all that's left are rags..it ain't gonna happen..it would be nice in a fantasy world but noooo..SexxyLexxy, you said it all in a nutshell..nothing else to add...sorry Osiri..
Re: More?
*mildly surprised by the hostile reception* sorry guys..didn't know you felt this strongly against such a concept. I suppose this idea may have been talked into the ground to some extent, but not all of us have been on these boards for years, nor do we necessarily feel like the world would be better if it simply remained stagnant. I personally have met and talked to quite a number of fans who do not feel the way you do, nor do you really know what it takes to get a motion picture off the ground. Movies do not have to be major money makers in order to be considered successful, and it seems a bit disengenuous to the cast to assume LEXX would be so poorly received it isn't worth the effort. Not only that, but, and I may be eating my words, you really don't know what Michael, Brian, Xenia or any of the others really want until someone actually approaches them with idea, so I'm sorry but I'm really tired of hearing people say they know these actors so well they've got their lives all figured out for them. In the end, no one really knows what these actors want to see happen until the idea is presented. For years, Leonard Nimoy told everyone he was so sick of being associated with Spock and never wanted to do another show again as long as he lived. (and remember, this is from a show that had such poor ratings it actually got cancelled! Leonard even wrote a book called "I am not Spock". Well, guess what? The right offer and a few years went by, Leonard discovered they'd even let him direct in return for reprising his role and suddenly he was doing movie after movie again....and loving it, incidentally. He even went so far as to write a book entitled "I am Spock!" Quite a dramatic turnaround for someone who swore he'd never reprise his role. Garnering the interest of someone who's not so inclined to reprise a role is simply a matter of discovering what it is they want and then providing the opportunity to them. There is no such thing as "NEVER" as far as the industry is concerned. And anyway, this is simply a hypothetical question and not necessarily implying that something is in the works. So, if LEXX fans really do stick together as they claim to, they've sure gone out of their way to suggest their rigidity towards anyone even mildly interested in renewing storylines. Geez...even if Michael were inclined to reprise his role, look at the rigidity he would be met with...people claiming they'd never endorse something that renews the franchise just because they think it should have ended the way that it did...if I were him I'd feel pressured to bow out simply for that reason alone. And for that, it is really too bad. I am really disheartened because this reluctance seems selfish inherently. After all, who are we to judge what the actors themselves would like to see? And I am sorry if I annoyed you with an apparently overdone subject. Perhaps I should have kept my LEXXY opinions to myself. I am sure you will be relieved to know I will not revisit this topic again.
Re: More?
Well there's really no need to overreact on this subject.
We've had YEARS of hearing the cast members tell us (Xenia and Brian) that there will be a continuation of Lexx, only to find out that the funding never came thru, that Alliance wouldn't give up the rights, etc. We've had experience with this subject, not like some people that think they've got it all figured out after a few short months of looking at a couple of Lexx boards. If it were that easy, it would have been done by now.
I've been a fan of Lexx for 10 years, and I've seen literally HUNDREDS of fans try and get the show renewed or redone since it ended over 3 years ago, and saw how heartbroken everyone was when their dream didnt' come true.
I'm NOT trying to tell anyone for sure what the cast members would do, but as Dr. Phil always says, the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour, I've come to understand the motivation of alot of the cast members by actually TALKING to them about certain subjects, not just guessing.
Not to mention there's actually stuff in PRINT that says what's on their minds regarding any future Lexx projects.
Of course the cast would love to keep our hopes up, it helps to drive revenue on the dvds and the reruns in foreign countries, but to say that I dont' know what it takes to make a tv or film is totally off the mark.
I've had over 15 years experience working for MCA Universal studios, in Dallas and other places, and I was the head of a Marketing and Promotions department that spanned a 5 state territory, so if ANYONE knows what it would take to make a movie or a tv show, it would most certainly be me of all of those in Lexx fandom today.
It's a little insulting to hear that someone thinks we're all so stupid we can't figure out what a cast member means when they tell us IN PERSON, "I"ve had enough, I need a nice long rest"..
Just maybe?
As for making a film that doesn't make money, you'll have a tough time trying to get an investor interested if that's the first words out of your mouth. "Oh, I LOVE the show, and it didn't really do that much financially during it's 4 season run, but we're not doing this for the money anyway"..
I'd like to see the faces of the Execs at Alliance when you waltz in and tell them you want to snag their property away but you don't plan to make it profitable. Alliance is notoriously greedy in keeping their properties, whether they plan to use them or not. They dont' surrender their stuff ever, and the more you act as if you want it, the less likey they would be to even discuss it. For someone who's supposed to be versed in the ways of the movie industry, you seem to have a very thin skin when it comes to constructive criticism. You'll have to develop tougher skin if you dont' want to be embarrassed by studio execs whose negotiation skills would make a barracuda envious.
I feel I"ve been quite lenient listening to those who spout that they're going to be the 'Saviour' of Lexx, but isn't really all just an agenda to try and corral the cast members into a singular unit for the purpose of exploitation? Especially Michael?
We see this kind of thing happen all the time, we try and warn people about the reception they might get and they always ignore us, thinking we're somehow being proprietory, but then it always backfires and the next thing you know, someone's gotten their feelings hurt by a cast member that just isn't interested in someone's pipedream of being the next big Lexx Exec, or whatever.
Now if those who want to have their dream of a Lexx reunion or spin-off or whatever want to send emails to Brian and see what he says, then more power to ya, but this is a forum for those to express their opinions, and if someone says something you don't like, you just gotta shake it off, it won't really matter in the grand scheme of things anyway.
If by reading our thoughts about this subject upsets you then perhaps this project should have more homework done on it, like the stats of all the dvd sales, the revenue from the overseas distribution deals, the residuals in Europe versus the residuals in Canada and the US, the free advertising spots you should get when you advertise the reruns on the cable networks, the demographic stats that are skewed towards the advertisers in each market...etc etc.
Now if you think our responses to your question seem less than enthusiastic, it's just because we have more experience in the disappointments from getting our hopes up.
So just dont' blame the messenger..
Re: More?
I understand where you are coming from Sexxylexxy, and I'm not trying to imply that you do not have vast years of experience in this arena. I apologize if it seemed insulting, but I felt a bit put out by your reaction as well. My only problem was with the fact that this was simply a hypothetical, "what if there were a movie question" and suddenly you all took it to mean that I'm standing outside Alliance Atlantis's door right now begging for the rights. This was simply a hypothetical, folks - for the record. Whether the cast wanted to reprise their roles or not or whatever, I was just curious what others would like to see happen in the event there was such a thing. I even stated that I wasn't implying something was in the works. It is true I have interest in future LEXX projects, but that doesn't mean they necessarily involve the scenarios I listed above (meaning films...after all, there are other mediums too). And as for #s of years in the entertainment business, I am not at liberty to disclose things on my end, but rest assured I am not a newbie by any stretch of the imagination...nor am I thin skinned when it involves things that really count. I was merely put off by the fact that that there seems to be quite a bit of antagonism towards anyone the veteran Lexxians deem naive with regards to LEXX...as if we are not capable of - or deserving of - fresh ideas and opinions even in a hypothetical sense. (can any topic really be too overdone? I mean isn't that the point of a fan forum to recruit new fans and rehash old hypotheticals endlessly? Which we will not doubt continue to be doing 20 years from now) In this case, it would seem that you are the one taking things rather seriously by feeling it necessary to espouse your apparent depth of experience with regards to LEXX, the film industry and personal conversations with the cast. I do not now, nor have I ever doubted your wisdom in these matters, so there's no need to feel threatened, surely. I think we all need to simply take a deep breath and just remember this is supposed to be all in good fun, right? No need to take ourselves quite so seriously, for heaven's sake. If I did seem overly sensitive in my last post, it is more likely due to the fact that my husband just lost his mother last week and I was feeling low when I read your post. So then something I put out there just as a geeky sort of what if scenario suddenly became an expression of me taking on Alliance Atlantis, and I got the sense that you had the wrong idea about me. But understand something, just because I haven't been posting on these boards for years like many others, or putting myself out there for scrutiny does not mean you know me or what I am capable of, who I know or what connections I may have- and until you do it is best not to judge. That is my business and mine alone...and it will remain so until I strategically decide otherwise. So I'd appreciate us dispensing with the posturing and just get back to just having fun and playing around with hypotheticals. That's why we're all here, after all.
Re: More?
Well I for one need to clarify a couple of things...
1. You asked us for an opinion regarding a new project on Lexx. I did NOT start insulting you or anything like that. I think you might want to actually go back and read your first post. I gave you my opinion. ALL I did was to say I prefered the story to be left as is...quite my right, and I'm allowed to say so, especially if someone is ASKING me.
2. You responded by calling us 'hostile', and saying you'd been 'stomped on' because I didnt' agree with what you wanted to do. Trust, me, if I wanted you to feel stomped on, and be hostile, you'd know it, I've never had any trouble saying what's on my mind, even if it's somewhat blunt.
It doesnt' make me any 'less' of a Lexx fan simply because I prefer to leave the show the way PAUL DONOVAN left it...after all, it was HIS vision, not the cast members.
3. Then you start assuming I have 'no idea how to put a show together', etc...Sorry, but I had to correct you, NOW you say I'm 'posturing', etc. So I guess that means the resonse you're giving about 'who you know, etc'. is posturing as well, then?
I simply gave you information that apparently you were missing. YES I've had long experience in the business, and I'm not afraid to admit who I've worked for and when. If you're legit, I don't see any reason for secrecy.
4. As for us not taking things so seriously, that's exactly what I said in the last post, that someone is taking themselves and this whole issue WAY too seriously, and if you don't really want people's opinions, then dont' ask, if you're not prepared to hear something you don't like. And then go around Myspace and send bulletins insisting that those that aren't with you are against you, and that we're not 'open to new ideas', etc, etc. Utter rubbish.
We've been open to new ideas for years, that's why we're here, but that doesn't mean I have to allow someone to insult me, or my boards just because they have an agenda, or something to prove.
AND it would not be to your best interest THIS CLOSE to the Convention to alienate those that might be of help to you, and turn this into some kind of 'Us against Them' scenario, it would be VERY counter-productive to your plans.
I personally dont' care one way or the other if Lexx does another show, I'd be happy to see a continuation of the series in some form, but I"m not gonna cry in my beer if it doesn't happen, we've gotten all our hopes up before only to see them crash and burn time and time again. Sometimes it's best to just ignore the 'new ideas' and see if they pan out, which so far they haven't.
That doesnt' mean we're all 'stale and stagnant' either. I've just this year put up the michael-mcmanus.com site, simply because i"m trying to help with the promotion of the convention appearance and get interest back into Lexx. Along with my participation in the Lexxzone site, not to mention the other 3 Lexx sites I have interest in, most of them in the past year. By the way, what Lexx sites do you have up so far, give me the links and I"d be happy to put them up for you.
So you see, others are actually doing something to keep Lexx alive, we're not just sitting here looking back on the 'old days', we've actually done more than anyone to keep Lexx alive in the hearts of the fans than ANYONE else in Lexx fandom. All you have to do is go look at the sites and see.
And personally, I dont' think arguing over this trivial matter is
worth all this drama.
If you want to try some Lexx project, then like I said before, more power to you, just don't attack those that might have different opinions than you, it's not going help Lexx fandom to splinter it even further than it is already.
Re: More?
Oh, man, this really isn't going at all the way I hoped you'd take it. I'm not trying to be insulting. In fact, the more I say, the more angry you seem to get. I'm just a little hurt that all I did was post a hypothetical and all I'm getting is "leave it the way it is". That's fine if that's what you want, Sexxy. This is your forum and you have the right to feel that way. I'm not even deliberating that with you. If you don't want to see the series continue, I'm perfectly fine with that. It's just an opinion. I was really posting this for fun, just to see what fans might like to see in a purely hypothetical light. I'm certainly not trying to alienate the LEXX community. Far from it! I love the fans and everything they stand for. Like I said in my first post, it may have seemed a bit overdramatic, but that was because I was going through some personal family issues and I probably let my emotions get the better of me. It really hurts that you seem bent on defaming me. I'm not really sure why. The secrecy surrounding my cred is simply me protecting myself professionally. I have a right to do that, incidentally. I don't go around telling everyone that I know so and so or that I am some hot shot for the simple reason that I don't want to put myself above the fans out there. I'm no better than they are. I'm just a schmuck like everyone else trying to make a living and follow my dreams. Would it really matter who I know anyway? And what if I didn't know anyone and had absolutely no connections? Does that make me less legit? I don't think so. Ability and talent should speak for itself...bottom line...no matter who you are. There are alot of very talented people out there that I have met..budding writers with great ideas. And if I am poorly recieved at Timeless Destinations simply because I happened to engage you in a conversation about the future of LEXX, then that speaks poorly of those who run the events there, not poorly of me. I would welcome anyone I meet there with open arms and I'd hope they'd extend me the same courtesy. Anyway, I'm through with this thread, sexxy. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers, and if I'm to blame then so be it. Sigh... And incidentally Sexxy...I really do admire you and what you've done here one this site. Your Michael-McManus site is the most comprehensive on the web, and I'm sure he'd be quite pleased with what you've done, and I always considered you a friend. I only wish you felt the same of me. At least, I thought you did once.
Re: More? *sigh* :)
Well Osiri, I'm not sure why you're 'hurt' and 'saddened' over these posts. All I've done here is post my opinion, and then you totally blew it out of proportion, and seem to keep on digging yourself further and further into a hole, for some reason. ??
I'm certainly not angry, that would mean I'd have to have a strong emotion about these posts, when actually I'm just trying to make points. I'm sure that if I were really angry, you wouldn't have any trouble figuring that out.. I;m legendary for my firey temper and have been known to burn down boards because of people lying and inventing gossip about me just for sport. This thread has actually been a cake walk compared to some others I've been involved in.
As for why you're so upset over someone saying they'd rather just see the series end as it is, is totally bewildering. I'm sure you'd have to expect that reaction from at least a segment of the Lexx community, it just seemed a tad over-dramatic..
And I"m not exactly sure what you mean by 'defaming' you, I haven't said anything about you personally other than your attempts to keep dragging me into some kind of conflict over this issue, and that's not really anything defamatory, just my opinion.
As protecting yourself from the fans, I don't know why you'd have to do that, I dont see anyone out there stalking other Lexx fans simply because of where they work...:????
And the remark about how you might be recieved at Timeless Destinations because of this issue, sort of smacks of you trying to defame ME of attempting to block your attempts to meet cast, etc, when I'm not even GOING to the Con, I'm going to be doing all kinds of techie things from my end here.
What it meant, was that you're acting sort of irrational about the response to your question, and meeting the cast and promoting your ideas, and if you had more clarity of vision, you'd be trying to get those folks at the TD con that have the pull, to help you instead of allowing them so see how you''re reacting to a simple little opinion regarding ONE person's view of the series. After all, many of them READ this forum as well as you do. If someone out there that has the authority to allow access to cast members sees something disturbing on the groups, they have the right to do what they feel is necessary to make the cast more secure in their appearances, regardless of what I think about it.
Since I mentioned that, now your responses seem to be sort of backhanded insults, like saying that 'you don't try to act like a big shot', etc...as if I was....??
The only time I ever mention my history in the business is when someone challenges my credentials, so if that's acting like a 'big shot', then oh well. If I have to defend myself against someone saying I 'don't have any idea' how the TV industry works, then I'm sure you can see why I"d pop off my list of creds... Simply correcting an oversight.
And I thank you for your compliment on my MM site, hopefully I can soon add it to the list of the official sites, especially since it's on the official Lexx server, it's something I've worked very hard to accomplish.
And if you're wanting to promote an idea to the cast members, you might want to make sure THEY know YOU have credentials, after all, talent means NOTHING without the right people to get you in the front door, in spite of what someone might have told you in their fantasies about making a new series. If you come correct, they'll be responsive, I'm sure.
My feathers aren't really all that ruffled, it's just been confusing to see why someone would get so upset over something they asked for...My opinion here seems to have set you off a whole lot more than any other discussion on any other thread or board that I've seen. Hope you don't get upset at the Con if any of the cast members echo the same attitude...
As for being a friend, well I certainly hope you'll take this as constructive criticism instead of a slam against you. If I wanted to insult someone, I wouldn't hold back and do it passive-aggressively, I'd just come out and say so, and sometimes I do get very blunt, but I figure, time is way too short to deal with unpleasantness, so I usually just say what's on my mind....
I hope you continue to write about Lexx,
tons of fans have written acres of Lexx Fanfic, (some real masterpieces) so that should spur you onto more writing.
