The Game - Rules, Scoring, Sign-up
What it’s all about - Trivial Pursuit is a board game, which means it uses a gameboard, position markers, and a method of moving the markers around the board. The game provides six “pie plates” of different colors to use as position markers. The objective is to fill the pie plate with six different slices of pie, each color representing a different category, and then advance to the final frontier for the win. Players earn slices of pie by correctly answering trivia questions. To take a turn, a player rolls the die and advances the pie plate position marker the number of spaces indicated by the die. The player will likely land on a space representing a particular color/category, and is then asked a question from that color/category. The questions are pre-printed on cards and read by an opponent. When a player needs to be presented with a trivia question, an opponent draws a card out of the box and reads the question of that color/category. Each card has one question for each category printed on it, and the answers on the back of the card. If the player answers correctly, s/he again rolls the die and continues the turn. If the pie plate position marker was on a pie-earning space, the player receives a slice of pie if s/he does not already have that color in his/her pie plate. The gameboard includes only one space where each of the six kinds of pie may be earned. None of this really matters, though, because we won’t be playing the game that way.

Why it’s of interest here - The game has been popular enough to spawn add-ons for people with different backgrounds and interests. The original version of the game became known as the Genus edition (that’s Genus, not Genius, although many people feel you need to be one to play). Additional sets of trivia cards have been printed, including my personal favorite – the Baby Boomer edition.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of why it’s of any interest to fans of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. The answer to that question lies with the fact that our very own sassyeggsglobal (aka Sassy, occasionally Miss Sassy Pants) has developed a Buffy, the Vampire Slayer edition of the game, and has generously offered to let us play with her here. The game, that is.

Why anyone would want to play - To prove that Buffy fans are intellectually elite. To engage in that time-honored tradition of human competition. To have an excuse to watch those episodes for the umpteenth time. To hang out at the board with some other fanciers of Buffy and her friends. To show off your knowledge of all things Buffy. To exercise your mental faculties. To consume your fair share of internet bandwidth without having to face any pop-ups. To reward Sassy for all the hard work she put into developing the game. To win the respect and admiration of your fellow Buffy fans. Oh, and to win prizes, too.

Here’s how we’re gonna do it - Each week we will address a particular color/category. Two different questions will be posted for that color/category, one on or around Monday and another on or around Thursday. Each question will be posted as a new thread. The questions will be posted at different times, spread out evenly around the clock to avoid giving any timing advantages to players in any particular part of the world, or whose schedules would prevent them from playing at certain times. Players will post their answers as a reply to the thread. This game will operate on the honor system, meaning that players are expected to come up with the answers themselves instead of copying an answer from a player who responded before them. For that reason, the default font in this forum is invisible. It cannot be seen unless the text is highlighted. This will make it easier for players to adhere to the honor system because there will be no opportunity to inadvertently, unintentionally look at another player’s answer.

The regular boardgame does not allow the use of any research or resource materials, but that requirement will be waived in this game. Players may research any materials available, including internet sites, books, magazines, or the episodes themselves to find the answers to the questions. The only resource that players are expected to avoid using are the answers posted by other players.

Answers will be accepted for a week after the question has been posted. When a full week has expired, the thread will be closed. Scoring will be tabulated and posted after each question has been closed. Questions may be closed before the week has expired if all of the players registered for the game have submitted their answers.

Here’s what comes next - More details about the rules, scoring, prizes, and registration will follow in another post.

Scoring - Basic
Basic Scoring - The scoring scheme developed for this game is rather complex, to allow for the unique circumstances involved in playing on the internet and using the honor system. Due to the complexity of the scoring scheme and the amount of work required to maintain scores for each player, the number of players accepted will be limited.

The scoring system awards points for incorrect answers to encourage players to take a stab at it, just like Buffy would. The scoring system also awards additional points for timeliness, which introduces another element of strategy to the game. If you spend too much time researching, you'll miss the extra points awarded to the quickest responses. This requires players to assess whether it is best to quickly post an answer about which they are uncertain or spend time researching the correct answer.

Basic Scoring -
250 Points for each correct answer by the cutoff.

150 Points for each incorrect answer by the cutoff.

Timeliness Bonus -
Add 50 – n points where n is the number of hours (or partial hours) that have elapsed since the question was posted. It’s important to note that time is counted not from the original post date/time, but the last time it was edited by the poster. If, for any reason, the posts need to be edited by the mods, the mods will record the appropriate date/time in the post.

This bonus will apply to every answer, right or wrong.

Me First! Bonus -
The first answer (right or wrong) receives 50 bonus points.

The second answer (right or wrong) receives 30 bonus points.

The third answer (right or wrong) receives 10 bonus points.

The number of points awarded will be high, but that helps to provide mathematical weighting without resorting to the use of decimals or fractions or other complex calculations.

Booby Point Scoring
Booby Point Scoring - Because boobies are near and dear to our hearts, we have also developed a specialized scoring system for the accumulation of booby points. Unlike most competitions, the booby prize will not be awarded to the player with the smallest score. Instead, the booby prize winner will be the player with the most booby points.

Basic Booby Scoring -
2 Points for any normal incorrect answer.

5 Points for booby incorrect answers. A booby answer is one that sticks out because it is waaay off, or really dumb, or funny. It is entirely subjective, and will be solely determined by the judge(s). Booby answer points will only be awarded when truly earned, and every question might not have a booby answer winner. It is also possible that some questions might have multiple booby answers.

Booby Timeliness Scoring
3 Booby Points for posting the last answer (right or wrong) before the cutoff.

2 Booby Points for posting the second-to-last answer before the cutoff.

1 Booby Point for posting the third-to-last answer before the cutoff.

The Booby Prize will be a celebration of those marvelous mammaries. We are committed to working with the winner to ensure the prize complements, and does not offend, the winner's tastes and sensibilities.

Colors and Categories
Colors and Categories

Okay, folks! Sassy here with the lowdown on the categories. The categories will be played once each, with one easy and one more difficult (at least, in my opinion) question, and in the following order:

1. Buffyverse Geography (Blueberry Pie)- Some questions are "Name the building where..." and some are "Name the city in which..." So, not necessarily limited to Sunnydale, but having to do with anything mentioned in the Buffyverse.

2. Scoobies and White Hats (Raspberry Pie)- Questions like "Which Scooby was the one who..." and stuff like that. HOWEVER, it should be noted that Spike is not considered a Scooby for the purposes of this game. Since he himself would be rather offended at being included in the group, I'm respecting his wishes.

3. Big Bads and Evil Doers (Lemon Meringue Pie)- Could be "Name the demon from Episode X" or "Which Big Bad did ____?" Stuff like that.

4. Finish the Quote (Fudge Brownie Pie)- I give you the first half of a quote and the person who said it, and you have to finish it. Duh.

5. Name the Episode (Key Lime Pie)- Sometimes it's "Name the episode where Buffy kills X." and some are a full quote and the person who said it, and you have to say which episode it came from.

6. Wild Card (Just Peachy Pumpkin Pie)- Any miscellaneous Buffyverse stuff and some stuff like "Name the film that SMG starred in with Actor X."

Okay. That should answer all questions. If it doesn't, that probably means you're going to lose. How depressing.

Summary and Specifics
Summary and Specifics -Well, we've covered the what, why, where, and how. What remains are the who and the when.

The game and prizes are sponsored by the NBW and the moderators of this forum. But since we want to play, the only person who is ineligible to participate is the game's creator, sassyeggsglobal (aka Sassy or Miss Sassy Pants).

Most of the questions will be posted by Miss Sassy Pants, but another moderator may occasionally post a question. At those times when it is impossible or deliriously inconvenient for Miss Sassy Pants to post the question, she will forward it to another designated party for posting. We will not cheat, we will not look at the question until it is time to post it. We promise.

The game will commence at approximately 8:00 am CST (Central Standard Time) on Monday, November 4, 2002. That is board time - this bulletin board uses CST as its time standard. Central Standard Time is GMT or UTC (Greenwich Mean Time or Universal Time Coordinate) minus 6 hours. The United Kingdom happens to be spot-on GMT. Check the link provided above for other time zone comparisons.

The first 20 people who sign up before the game starts will be accepted for this first round.

The calendar for the first round is as follows:

1. Buffyverse Geography - commences on or about November 4

2. Scoobies and White-Hats - commences on or about November 11

3. Big Bads and Evil-doers - commences on or about November 18

4. Finish the Quote - commences on or about November 25

5. Name the Episode - commences on or about December 2

6. Wild Card - commences on or about December 9

The dates provided are approximate due to the different world time zones and the fact that the questions will be posted at different times around the clock.

No ending dates are provided because each category will end when the time allowed to post replies has expired. For that reason, timeframes for the categories will overlap.

Prizewinners will be expected to provide a mailing address to the game's sponsors. It will not be divulged to any other parties. We will need it to enable us to get your prize to you. Duh.

Players are responsible for the accuracy of their own scores. While we will strive for correct scoring, mistakes may be made. Players are expected to notify the game's sponsors of any errors in scorekeeping ASAP. Corrections to your own or other players' scores will be gratefully accepted. Otherwise, errors will be carried forward...

Answers must be posted in the same thread in which the question was posed, and in the invisible (default) font.

Any posting of answers anywhere else or posting of answers in visible font will be immediately deleted, and the poster subject to ejection from the game, and possibly the community.

Any decisions made by the sponsors are final. Although we believe we have covered all bases, we may discover some ambiguities in the rules or the scoring as the game progresses. On those occasions, the game's sponsors will make a determination of the proper application of the rules.

If you would like to sign up for the game, post a reply in this thread. Be sure to state that you understand and accept the rules and will abide by them. The first 20 people who signup by the time the game starts will be accepted for this round.

Thanks - and good luck!

Me first, me first, meeeeee ffiiiiirrrrrrsssssttttttttt!!!!! Oh, I'm second. Oh, well. I can live with that. As long as I'm not 22nd. Because if I was, I'd be SOL.

I promise to abide by all the rules stated to the best of my ability. I also promise not to cheat just so I can win a prize, cuz I can't really win one anyway. So there.

This is gonna be so much fun!

Allright, murph. Now that you've signed up, it's time for Trivia calisthenics. You thought this was going to be easy? No way! As a warm-up, memorize the first season's episodes' dialogue. Be ready for a pop quiz tomorrow. Mwah-ha-ha-ha! Just kidding. I suppose.

p.s. Did anyone else get distracted from the game when murph mentioned Zooey and bondage in the same sentence? ;)

Edited to add: Darn it! I'm always forgetting that pesky HTML check box. Okay, here! BAM! I'm visible!

eirefaerie: You should be able to see everything in this thread, but it is the only active thread as of yet. Starting on Monday morning (8 our time), I will post the first set of questions. If you can't see the rules at the top for some reason, you can come over to my house and look at them under my (ahem) MODERATOR SUPREMO login. :grin

Well, Dachelle, you can go ahead and answer every question with "Drew"; or "Goddard is a God", but I doubt if you'd particularly win with that strategy. At any rate, you're signed up, too. Good luck!

So, if I can see the rules at the top of the page, and then have to highlight everyone else's posts . . . that's right, right?

Cause blamey, murph, Dachelle, et al are all in spoiler font.

And I bet I'm in spoiler font, too. I could say anything! Anything!
I won't though.
