The Reunion: Escaping the School
The weekend had been boring, and the week to come didn't promise to be any better. Emily sat on the step outside of the house, the porch wasn't exactly the greatest escape either, people still walked in and out of the house and one of the number of residence seemed intent on checking up on here every now and then. It felt like someone was poking their head out every five minutes, save Ben. His wife was back in Iowa, and while it was rare to actually get her brother alone, Emily found herself wishing he wasn't around, wishing he was back in Iowa and just... gone! He was ruining everything! Always arguing, always bickering, always making Riley so upset, why couldn't he just go away? Ben was well known for doing what he felt was best for himself, and right now all he did was say how being around Riley was doing no one any good, so why did he insist on staying with the rest of them?
It was hard enough getting Riley to open up with them, he was shutting them out more and more at times and just when she thought he was about to start opening up, Ben would run his mouth off and suddenly Riley was once more behind his high walls of defense and unshakeable silence. Martha loved Ben, but Riley was her son, and a son they all thought dead, how could he be so heartless! Who cared if he was a mutant, at least he was alive, at least he wasn't stuck in that awful casket, burried under all that yucky mud and trodden over without a care or thought for who he used to be. Didn't that mean anything to Ben? wasn't it better that Riley was a mutant and alive then dead and gone? What was wrong with her brother! And poor Catherine, she got shot, she almost died, and all Ben can do is carry on about how it was because they were mutants and how no one wanted them around, but she lost a baby! And he didn't even care about that, one less mutant, sometimes she wished she never had him as a brother!
They were giving Riley so much space now, and all she wanted to do was go back and see how he was, it wasn't fair, she wanted to get to know him, she wanted to spend more time, and everyone felt it was better to just distance themselves till Riley was ready, but what if he never was? With Ben carrying on like that, what if Riley decided it was easier not having to deal with his family? What if Riley didn't even like her? The thought was brushed aside as she thumbbed gently the bracelete he had given her, more worried that she'd dislike it then Ben had ever been with the gifts he had half heartedly chosen for her. Emily may have been a toddler when Riley supposedly died, but she missed him all the same, and she knew that she missed him, and that she cared about him, because Martha used to always take her to Riley's grave and she always remembered feeling a strange comfort by being near his tombstone. But all those times she had gone there alone, all those things she ever whispered to him, all those secrets, none of them ever got to him, because he was never there, he was alive, and he was stolen from them, and she hated that. Hated that someone who meant so much to so many could just be taken from them, and beyond that, forget them all! It wasn't fair!
Before they had left for this place, Riley had given her money, Martha would have insisted he keep it for himself so Riley told Emily to keep it a secret, and that he had plenty more and so she shouldn't worry. She had spent some of it, given their finances, Emily hadn't had many chances to go to the movies or eat take out and so the other day she had told them she was going for a walk and ended up sneaking into the cinemas with freshly brought take out. Still, she had almost $80 in her wallet, more then enough to catch a bus to the school, and if she got lost she could get a cab. The 14 year old let out a sigh, which ended more irritated then it started due to the door opening and Ben's voice called to her.
"You're being rude staying out here, we're going to bed so come in and say goodnight," She was being rude? That was almost humorous, and the dry laugh she gave hinted that Emily was still angry from the earlier fight, at least Michael had scolded Ben, not that Ben had been pleased he had, they didn't know the Simons very well but Kate had come to visit a lot. She was really lovely to all of them, even Ben minded his attitude around her, Emily wondered if Riley had named his dog after her subconsiously somehow. There was no reply given to Ben, just a silent glare as she shouldered her way through the door and up the stairs, the door shutting behind her without so much as an effort to say goodnight... she'd already spoken to basically the entire household as they had gone out to check on her.
There was a desire to call Riley but she'd been told to leave him alone for a little while, let him call them and have some space, she was tired of hearing it really. Maybe it was good for him, but so what, a five minute call was hardly going to kill him, and what harm could it possibly do to show they were interested in him? It was just after one in the morning and she really had no interest in sleeping, though there was little else to really do. Ben used to sneak out at night all the time, only Emily knew sneaking out in Iowa and sneaking out in New York city were two completely different sort of risk factors, Iowa was hardly as dangerous... but still.. Slumping on her bed for a short while after changing into her sleep wear, Emily decided sleep wasn't going to come to her any time soon, and decided instead to read. The side light wasn't too bright, so hopefully no one would see the light under her door and ask her to turn it off and get to sleep, especially if it was Ben who might do it, because she might end up throwing the book at him...
...The book ended up slumped on Emily's chest, her eyes gently closed as a light sleep had swept over her after the first chapter, deep enough for the time that past to seem so swift, and yet not so deep that she didn't hear the engine of the car pulling up the drive way. There was a road ouside the house, but not one of the really busy ones, and at least the Simon's had a courtyard so the cars that did drive by weren't sounding as if they were right outside their windows. Which made the close proximity of this car disturb Emily's sleep, causing groggy eyes to open and stare at the window, the light of the taxi's headlights spilled softly into her room from below. It was still dark, and with a look at the clock it wasn't even five yet, leaving Emily to wonder who would be driving to the house at this hour.
Quietly the young girl slipped out from under her covers, creeping lightly towards the window and peering out into the courtyard below, it was a taxi, she could tell by the colour and style, the same sort of cars flooded most of the streets in the city. But the figure that came out took a few moments to register, first obscured by the shadows and the dark gloom that hanged around the night hour. But as soon as her face turned, lit by the cars headlights, Emily realized it was Catherine, looking nervous and for some reason on her own, as Riley hadn't stepped out of the cab before it had driven away. With a heat beat Emily rushed for the door of her room, slipping out and trying to keep her footsteps light as she rushed to the front door, Catherine had been nice enough to her, and she was Riley's girlfriend, it made Emily look at the older girl with a sense of respect and affection. If Ben saw her... he'd start arguing again! But what was she doing here? Was something wrong? Why wasn't she with Riley though? Maybe she had a fight with him? Or maybe she wanted to see how they were going... but at this hour? Emily was young but she wasn't that senseless.
"Catherine?" The young girl had opened the door slightly, sliding herself out of the house and shutting it behind her, the air was cold and her bed clothes had been shorts and a shirt, so Emily's arms fast wrapped about herself. Instead of turning on the light for the front, which might wake the others up, Emily relied on the light of the lamp posts, though faint in comparison to what the front light would have offered, it was enough to see each other. "They're all asleep still, what's going on?" Most people tended to talk over Emily, she was the youngest, and even with the new babies on the way she was only recently allowed to tend to them unsupervised, it was nice to know someone closer to her age that was in a way part of the family through dating Riley, even if they were at the opposite ends of their teen years.
What was going on at the school? What were those things? Would Riley get out unharmed? Were her team members alright? The questions were exhausting, beating at her mind and giving her no peace. She could feel the beginning of a headache pounding away behind her eyes. Closing them she stared at the blackness of the back of her eyes and tried to think of something else. But try as she might her thoughts traitorously returned to Riley and the school.
She knew it was pointless to dwell over maybes and possibilities. After all the kids at the school were in the best position to defend themselves. Some would be running scared but others she knew would put up a damn good fight, for a moment she felt a tug of cowardice, she had run when she should have defended others and the school. But that was what the older members were for wasn't it? After all she was merely an agility mutant, she could punch someone but that was about as far as it went. She wasn't a killer and it would be stupid to pretend that she was. She just knew that Riley would be alright, he was tough and had all the training that he needed to keep himself out of trouble. He would be alright... wouldn't he?
Her eyes flicked open to glance down at her hand which had, such a short time ago been enclosed in his larger one. Had he initiated the contact or had she? Cat couldn't really remember, everything was such a blur. Leaving Riley, the sprint across the lawn, dodging through the forest trying to be as silent as possible, the lonely jog down the road into the local town where there was a cab stand.
She glanced at the large, fat, unshaven man who was sitting in the front of the taxi, would he throw her out of the taxi if he knew who she was? He'd made no attempt to talk to the young woman in the back of his car but she had certainly made no effort to strike up a conversation... she had far too much to think about.
The taxi swung from one house lined street onto another, they all looked the same to Catherine in the dim light afforded by the street lamps. Breathing out a gentle sigh she rubbed at her temples, trying to sooth the throbbing feeling. Then suddenly the cab was slowing down and stopping.
She handed over the requested amount from the notes that Riley had handed to her. If she'd had any sense she'd have picked up her own wallet, but clothes rather than finances had been at the front of her mind. Opening the door she slid out onto the silent street. It was late and she felt awkward about disturbing everyone, especially as she had no good news for them.
All of a sudden she heard a soft voice calling her name and turned towards it, here eyes adjusting to the light as she did so. It was Emily, Cat felt a sudden surge of affection for a familiar face. Did she tell Emily what was going on? Was it fair to break it to someone so young? No, she decided if anyone deserved to know first it was his parents.
'Hi Emily. Look can I speak to Riley's mum and dad?' The pounding behind her eyes increased, a sure sign that her body was stressed. She really didn't need a headache now, she needed to be thinking straight.

Re: The Reunion: Escaping the School
The look in the girls eyes was one that - while Emily wasn’t familiar enough to find a word for the expression - made her sad, sad and definitely worried. Whatever Cat was there for, Emily couldn’t help but wonder if it was something to do with her sneaking over to the school on Saturday, maybe it was a possibility, however as other things raced through the young girls mind, Catherine’s following words cut through Emily’s focus like an arrow striking her head on.
"Hi Emily. Look can I speak to Riley's mum and dad?" Why would Catherine need to travel all this way on her own to talk to Auntie Martha and Uncle Jonathan? Especially at this hour!! You can’t use ‘i was in the neighbourhood’ once it gets this late, something was wrong, and it had to be with Riley, were there complications due to his surgery earlier? If it was so important to come all this way, Riley would have done it himself, the only reason Catherine would come here without him would be if he couldn’t come, and as Emily’s mind raced all the more with worries that seemed limitless, the young Fin also managed a nod of her head.
As a child, Emily could be considered rather cute, as a teen she was a nice looking girl, slender yet thick of boned, much as the other Finn’s in her direct blood related family seemed to be. While Emily hardly considered herself attractive, she didn’t think herself ugly either, but her Aunt always mentioned how she was growing more and more beautiful every year, like a real young woman... and all Emily could see were a few inches added to her height. Next to Catherine however, she didn’t feel so pretty, but very plain and average, the agility mutant was very pretty, and with all the curves of a young woman that Emily knew would get the attentions of guys over her own. While it didn’t really upset her, as Emily was one of the few girls who hadn’t developed a keen interest in dating, nor really was she all into the eagerness to sneak around the school shed to kiss. There were far more interesting things to do, and she’d much rather tackle a guy friend to the ground then stand there stupidly for half hour clinging to him.
However all of Catherine’s usual looks seemed cast with shadows of concern that marked her face, there was no doubt something was wrong as the other drew closer to the house’s door, which Emily had motioned for Catherine to enter. "You can wait there," Riley’s young cousin offered with a motion of her hand towards the doorway that opened into the lounge room. It seemed the lights were automated, connected to some sort of motion sensor, because all you had to do was walk into the room and the soft glow of fine crafted light bulbs would come to life, soft enough to see clearly without hurting the eyes, but light enough that you didn’t need to switch on the actual lights to move about or talk or even just sit back and relax.
The house was full of warmth, the polished wood and exquisite furnishings all carefully chosen to give the appearance of an old styled home without the over the top extremes. A tall grandfather clock stood just by the entrance to the lounge in the entrance hall, its swinging pendulum in constant motion.
It all seemed so open and inviting, the room still cosy warm from the earlier fire that had since been put out. Photos spanned the walls, familiar faces muddled in with ones she’d never have seen before. The mantel piece above the fire held medals that were clearly from the army, displayed in a lovely glass case for easy viewing, followed by family medals and trophies, all set up neatly and with pride.
The earthy brown leather sofa and armchairs seemed soft and comfortable for sitting and general lounging around off to one side of the large room, a long twelve seater table sat off on the other side, dark wood and well polished with finely carved backseat rests for the chairs. It didn’t seem like a place Riley would call home, mainly because his decorating abilities were highly lacking and he was known to sit in a near empty apartment and be content in only the bear basics, as it would have seemed to Catherine considering his Washington apartment.
A soft scraping of claws on wooden floor could be heard, slow and laboured were the steps of what could only be a dog if one expected the sound to be coming from a pet. Often the movements were silenced, between carpets and rugs and the occasional pause, the canine seemed to make a journey of the short distance from the kitchen towards the lounge room. In the darkness, there was no hope to see, the partially blind dog had enough trouble seeing in the daytime, making things out in the near darkness was almost hopeless, though he’d been in this house for a few years now, back before his eyes were so bad that it hindered his movements. The old companion’s nose sniffed and snuffled his way about the entrance room, flopped grey ears trying to strain to hear, another thing that had started to fade this last few years, but old age was harsh on the once young and boisterous canine. The short grey and white blotched fur covered the quiet animal, dark blue patches covering over one eye and then splattered about his body. The shadow of the creature at the doorway seemed still as a statue as he looked blindly into the room, too old and seemingly lost to seem a threat as the light caught his glassy brown eyes. Slowly, as if unsure, the tail began to swing, slow, steady, cautious as if not wanting to over excite himself. With a limp and stiff muscles, more from having laid down for so long then just arthritis, the dog seemed to almost submissively approach the girl, his nose sniffing anxiously the closer he got. The eager nose led the animal to the girl, who carried a scent which had long ago been burned into his memory. It wasn’t from her, but it was on her, and it was fresh, and it was recent, and it was like a spark that ignited the memories so long ago pushed aside.
The thudding of footsteps could be heard, but they didn’t detract the dog’s attention from Catherine, his glassy eyes peering up at her, watching and waiting, tail still waging, as if she had something he wanted, something that he would wait patiently for and his nose seemed intent on trying to sniff her hands, even if he wasn’t shoving himself at her in the process and trying to remain placid and calm. Emily was first to return, as Riley’s folks quickly dressed themselves, Jon slipped on his jeans and just put a red and white chequered shirt over his white singlet, Martha throwing a faded red robe about her silken nightie. Unfortunately, Ben also heard her talking to their aunt and uncle and he had groggily come out to see what she was disturbing them for, and so ended up following her down, much to Emily’s obvious irritation.
"He won’t bite," Emily assured, there was a time that the pet may have, but that was a long time ago, he hadn’t bitten anyone in over five years now. If anything, it was a surprise to see him socializing, usually at most the guests got a sniff and then he turned his back on them, trotting off to his own private space somewhere.
"Don’t you lot get taught manners? It’s insanely late and you’re waking everyone up," As always, Ben’s rude manner was quick to be seen, although the canine seemed not to appreciate the tone and turned his head, front paws almost awkward in their attempt to shift position, a lazy snarl offered blindly to where the disturbance came from. Emily, in turn, also turned around towards Ben, "Yeah, shut up," the young teen added, agreeing with the elder dog’s growl as if it were a demand for silence towards Ben. "Aunt Martha said you weren’t allowed to talk to Catherine after how you upset everyone, so leave her alone and go back to your room, she’s here for us, you weren’t even invited down here," And, to what appeared great relief for Emily, Martha and Jon both entered, and both offered Ben a stern look, though it was Jonathan who addressed the young man.
"It’s late, and there’s too many up," Ben looked annoyed by this statement, and Jon’s body moving out of the doorway with an arm motioning the two other younger Finn’s to leave, even left Emily with a sunken expression. "Don’t think we’re letting you sleep in and skip chores just because you are up and about now," Emily didn’t really take that as a threat, because if it were good reason to be up, they’ve always let her get enough sleep so she could function, Ben on the other hand, would usually stay up for no reason or just to cause trouble somehow and this was one of those ‘just to cause trouble’ moments.
"Ben, go to bed, Emily before you go would you please get something for Catherine to drink, and a plate too please," The chance Martha offered to linger around a little longer obviously appealed to the fourteen year old who didn’t hesitate to head for the kitchen, leaving Ben to sulk off irritably to his room. "Sorry Catherine," The elder woman said soothingly in regards to Ben’s appearance, though she seemed to be taking in a steadying breath as Martha continued, "Is everything ok?"
Re: The Reunion: Escaping the School
Entering the house behind the younger girl Catherine stared around her, taking in the layout and decoration of the new place. Hearing the car pull away she glanced behind her, the last link to the school disappeared around the corner of the street. She shook herself slightly, she was being stupid. Riley had told her he’d come to her and she knew he would… unless anything stopped him. Turning her head back to Emily she tired to dispel the thoughts that crept unbidden into her mind. She was being stupid, she would give it a few days and then if he’d not turned up she’d start to worry.
As she entered the lounge upon Emily’s request the lights automatically flicked on bathing the room in a warm glow. She glanced around her once more, wondering if she should sit, made a motion to and then paced quickly to the window. Where was he? On his way to the house or still fighting to rescue children from the mansion. He was still sick, she ought to have made sure that he came with her. The young girls head throbbed more in reaction to her whirlwind of thoughts, she sighed and lifted a hand to her temple.
A sudden sound caught her attention and the next moment an old dog waddled into the room. Catherine had never really been one for animals, but she didn’t move away as the dog padded closer. She was about to stretch out a hand to the animal as it seemed friendly when Emily came back into the room. The mutants eyes flicked to the space behind the girl, where were his parents? A moment later she remembered that they would have to shake of sleep and struggle into their dressing gowns. She let out a breath, unaware she had been holding it in.
Displeasure filled her face as she caught sight of Ben, of all the people to be staying here! Well she wasn’t going to put up with any of his mutant hating ideas! Her chin lifted slightly and she gritted her teeth at the thought of a show down with him. It was too much to ask that he accept her turning up here without comment. "Don’t you lot get taught manners? It’s insanely late and you’re waking everyone up,"
The dog let out a low growl which Cat, at first thought was meant for her, but when Emily turned to Ben with a put down of her own she realised that the dog was growling at him. Why would a dog act in such a manner to a member of it’s own family? The young girl had no concept that she was carrying around the scent of Riley with her. "Aunt Martha said you weren’t allowed to talk to Catherine after how you upset everyone, so leave her alone and go back to your room, she’s here for us, you weren’t even invited down here," Despite everything this retort from Emily extracted a wicked smile from Catherine. So Ben had been told off… that gave her a much needed confidence boost. The smile vanished a second later when she realised that Riley’s parents were standing at the foot of the stairs.
The next few minutes were a blur, but she found herself sinking into one of the arm chair. Now it struck her that she had no idea what to say to his parents, how did you break news like this to someone? Taking a deep breath she looked down at her slender hands. Perhaps blunt was the best way… after all it was the only way she knew.
‘The school has been attacked.’ Seeing their faces she rushed to expand upon her point ‘But Riley’s OK’ was she right to say that, did she really know he was alright… but could she face saying otherwise. ‘He stayed to help some of the younger children but he’ll be here soon.’ She tried to sound as optimistic as possible, but what good was there that she could tell them. She suddenly hated Riley for putting her though this, why was she the one to bring yet more heartache down upon his family.
Re: Re: The Reunion: Escaping the School"The school has been attacked." Martha’s hands rose to her cover her mouth, a devastated look swiftly falling over her usually kind face, leaving a flurry of fear in her eyes, Jonathon’s arms had quickly reached for her as she learned towards him. Emily had only just picked up the words from inside the kitchen, she hadn’t really bothered with gathering food right away, wanting to know if they’d try and discuss as much as possible while she wasn’t in the room or not first. "But Riley’s OK" Was he? Emily glanced at the front door, there was a brush sends of desperation inside of her, to run off and save him... as if he needed her help. She’d seen students training out in the school grounds, she’d also heard all about the strict fitness schedule for those on teams like Riley. If Riley was in trouble... what hope could there be for her to save him? But then again... they lost him once, she didn’t want to be left alone with Ben again, Riley had his issues but he was more interested in Emily then her own brother.
Tension ebbed away only a fraction at Catherine’s assurances, though why he wasn’t here with her if he was ok was still a mystery on all their minds. One which was revealed shortly as Catherine continued.. but did nothing to aid them in their worries, in fact Martha just looked more with succumbed with her fears and concerns. "He stayed to help some of the younger children but he’ll be here soon." See, Ben wouldn’t do that, Riley actually stayed somewhere in trouble to help others, sending Catherine off to safety... he’d probably want Emily to remain here too and she didn’t doubt it but at the same time why couldn’t they for once help Riley when he needed it?
"What do we do?" Martha sounded distraught, tears were obviously being forcibly controlled but her will to hold them back was seeming to weaken, "Can’t we go get him?" She sounded so pleading, and yet the look in her eyes spoke of her knowing how dangerous that would be if there was any sort of fight going on... if she lost anyone else in her family... why was all this even happening to them, they weren’t anything special, they were just farmers.
"If Riley sent Catherine here, I doubt he’d want us taking her back to get him," Jon’s hands brushed the hair of his wife gently from her face as he spoke, grief stricken as ever and pained but as always trying to be strong for the woman he loved. "We will keep her safe and he will come to find us," There was a thoughtful expression crossing Riley’s father’s face, leaving the man to turn his gaze back to Catherine, for a moment looking so much as Riley did when ideas started pouring in, desperate and unsure as they were. "Who’s attacking the school?"
Re: Re: The Reunion: Escaping the School
The blonde haired girl averted her eyes as Jonathan reached over to comfort his wife. Part of her felt as if she were intruding into their grief, instead she stared down at her slim hands. She slipped her palms between her legs and pressed her keens togther, as if some how the pressure could ground her to the here and now. It was useless to worry about Riley, he had his training, he'd be fine. Tomorrow morning he'd be banging on the front door and then she'd run to him and...
Realising that Martha was speaking to her, she raised her head, golden brown curls bouncing slightly at the movement. She fixed a rather liquid gaze on the older woman... go back to the school? The thought was a frightening one, but she'd be brave if it were to rescue Riley.... She shook her head slightly, she'd promised Riley to remain here untill he arrived. She didn't want to cause him extra heartache if he turned up and they were all missing.
'He... Riley said to wait here for him.' Catherine said in a decided voice. She would wait here for him... at least for now. If he hadn't turned up in a few days then she would think about what was to be done. Getting to her feet she moved restlessly to the window... she could see the road from here and watch to see if he were coming. Her hands gripped the bottom of her jumper, pulling downwards in a nervousness very unlike Catherine.
"Who’s attacking the school?" She didn't turn her face around from the window, telling herself it was because she was watching for a taxi... not because she didn't want to meet Jonathans eyes. Drawing a deep breath she was proud of the fact her voice didn't tremble as she spoke.
'Humans' Somehow it felt as if a huge gulf had opened up between Riley's parents and herself. Their kind were hurting her kind, one hand lifted to rub against her temple. Since when had she started viewing herself as a mutant?! She'd always hated that lable... but somehow, somewhere she had accepted just what she was. 'I don't know who, only that they weren't mutants'

Re: Re: The Reunion: Escaping the School
'Humans' Came Catherine’s word, which Emily pretended meant nothing to her, as the tray in her hands was gripped just that little tighter, Martha’s stress became more evident and Emily hovered for a moment at the doorway. 'I don't know who, only that they weren't mutants'. All the stories of injustice to mutants suddenly rushed to the minds of both Finn’s, all the small things they’d ever seen, all the things they’d ever read, it was suddenly all happening, and their son was caught up within it all.
"I have her food," Emily announced, though Jon was the only one who looked over towards her, Martha had buried her face into the side of his chest and while no sobs could be heard, Emily knew she was crying. "It’s really late Uncle Jon, and since there’s not really a lot we can do right now," The now fourteen year old glanced at Catherine as she finished speaking, "If Catherine wants, I can take her to the spare bed…" This was a lovely house, but they had a few guests using up the spare rooms already, and somehow Emily couldn’t see Ben offering to give his room up for her. Though explaining the spare bed was in her room would be held off until she was in there, if Catherine was seriously apposed, Emily would be willing to sleep out here with Toby, who currently was slowly trying to find a comfortable way of sitting by Catherine’s feet, stiff joints however made it seem very awkward.
"There’s a table up there you can eat on," Though, Emily preferred always eating on her bed once the door was closed and no one was looking, even though she was always told to eat on the table to keep the place clean. "And you look like you could use some rest." The girl finished up, though her eyes fell to the old canine who had started leaning towards Catherine’s side, lifting his nose towards her hands as far as his sore body could allow, even attempting to flicker out his tongue, though he kept shifting a little, moving the weight of his body from one front paw to the other, and consequently kept missing the hand in his discomfort.
