The Secrecy of the X-men: Please Read
The topic of families being involved in the whole X-men recruiting has been brought up twice, while the second time was a brief comment it still showed me that the first time it came about and we made a discussion some people didn’t catch what that discussion was. So, this may happen again and as a result I decided to write this out and leave it in the Rules and info section so people both new and old can read and understand this and what has been decided, and hopefully why it was decided.
Granted when a student is going on a field trip the parents have to be notified, they need to fill out forms and be told what trips are planned and be assured their child/children are safe. But a student assigned to be an X-men recruit can not go to their parents with a form asking them to fill it out and give their permission to join. This is not a public entity, X-men are still, on this board at this time, a secret. Teams in the school are public knowledge as they compete in events, and spend time improving different skills together as well as learning how to deal in team situations. But school teams are common throughout most school, every school I have been to has had teams, school houses, and I never chose which one I was put on OR had a permission slip sent home to see if my mother wanted me on a school team or not.
The fact that these students are going out doing dangerous things does put their lives in danger, but the students can say no if they don’t want to be on a team, they can tell anyone who approaches them they don’t want to be part of anything, or they don’t want to continue doing what they agreed to. Being an X-men isn’t a thing they can prance around telling everyone, not their friends, not their family. BUT that doesn’t mean some people don’t talk to other people they trust, a mother tells her distraught friend who discovers their child is a mutant that there is a place where their child will be safe, a siblings might share the secret with each other, things like that are likely to happen. But I can not see Xavier sending out permission slips to parents asking if their son or daughter may partake in dangerous and potentially deadly missions… who as a parent would want the weight of the world on their childs shoulders? This is something the student must decide and the school will work around all X-men involved activities by stating any away missions as field trips, studies, anything that seems logical and believable.
That means that if a student is hurt during a mission the parents will not be told their child was attacked by giant killer robots, they will be told something else, from random muggings to an accident taking place in the school. If someone dies on a mission the truth can not be told because the school will be shut down and all the good it does will be lost, lies and cover stories are a must if the school has any hope of continuing its work. I’d also like to mention that as far as I have heard the same thing applies regarding the secrecy of the X-men. Mutants are hated and often hunted down by groups such as the Friends Of Humanity and other anti-mutant protestors, how can students hope of having a normal life if their school becomes public news and thus threatens to expose any student as a mutant, effectively ruining any chances they have of blending into the rest of the world when they leave the school. There are plenty of normal looking mutants that have that chance and I can’t see the faculty wanting to risk their futures by sending home top secret ‘for parental eyes only’ permission slips.
I know when some people are coming from.. If my kid brought home something like that I’d not only say no but I’d remove them from the school ASAP fearing they’ll get involved anyway. But if we go with that then if parents don’t agree in the methods of the X-men then they’ll tell others and eventually someone will get their hands on the information and the news will get it and stories will be published and everything will be ruined. As I said earlier, secrecy is imperative for the X-men’s existence, and should it be revealed who the X-men really are, then it’ll just be another bump in the road they’ll all have to try and recover from.
When the school is discovered being a mutant facility that doesn’t mean the X-men will be discovered, whether that does or does not come out depends on what happens during the course of the upcoming story. Hope I didn’t confuse anyone, and remember to ask any questions you wish regarding this or any other matter, the people here always love to help.
