Truth Saunders/Lye
*edited because of an error I caught the second time around when I mentionned the brotherhood instead of Maverick as I meant to and for spelling mistakes.

Name: Truth Saunders
Nickname: Tru, most commonly known as this.
Code Name: Lye (formerly Soothsayer)
Affiliation: Maverick
Legal Status: unregistered mutant, no criminal record
Occupation: Luckily with the money of Maverick she no longer needs a job.
Place of Birth: New York City
Marital Status: single
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Birthday: April 17th
Hair: blonde with darker natural routes, long and straight. At times she does have a purple streak through it in dye that washes out easily enough.
Eyes: blue-gray
Height: 5"9 and a quarter so she's tall
Weight: again no idea with weight but she's fairly slim with some muscle so not much weight on her.

Mother: Julia Hope-Saunders
Father: Luke Saunders
Other Important Relatives:

Angelina Saunders - younger sister (15)

Roman Saunders - half brother (21) - from her father's previous relationship. While with her family she saw little of him although she did always look up to him. After leaving them she lived in his apartment before finding Maverick and they help eachother out of trouble. They still keep in touch.

Powers:

The aptly named Truth has the handy power of telling when people are lying. Of course there are limits to each power, Tru's being that she can't read the thoughts and therefore tell if any person with a mutant power such as strong telepathy or a mental barrier is lying or not. Mutant powers that could affect perception may effect how well her powers work also. Truth has to have heard a person speak and to have been within sight of them in order to tell if what they say is a lie or the truth since part of her power depends upon sight and the closer she is the stronger her perception of a person's lie or truth. She always recieves a very faint impression when someone speaks of the truth within their statement but these are easily enough ignored and most of the time Tru doesn't bother with absent conversations, only delighting in pointing out the lies that will harm someone for her own amusement. When Tru really focuses her power on a conversation which she can do by choice instead of picking up everything around her, it is much easier for her to detect lies and the impressions are stronger. She can also tell if something is a partial truth or a whopper of a lie by the certain type of perception she picks up from a person so even small things like "What a great present" do register with her but it's the "no I'm not having an affair" ones that register with her as the most obvious.

Tru's power works by her senses and mutant gene picking up the responses of a person as they speak something out loud. She is more reliable than a lie detector but if someone is a particularly good liar like a conman who has spent all their life decieving then she can be fooled, more often than not unsure rather than downright wrong about a statement. Naturally the lie or truth must be spoken aloud so she can't tell a bluff in someone's actions or whether or not they will harm someone else but if they make a comment aloud about it then she will be able to tell.

Tru's power has also resulted in her telling better lies than most. It is extremely difficult for her to be caught in a lie by any mutants or humans and she comes across as extremely truthful anytime she wishes to, even if she were to try and convince someone that the sky was green, they would be convinced that she believed that. Tru can't fool a telepath though since her thoughts differ from what she says and an empath will likely be wary of her statement. An empath could be fooled but would probably pick up at least a hint of something deceptive about her that would raise suspicians. Tru's lie telling doesn't take any sort of focus of powers and so it does not wear her down as her next power does.

Tru also has the ability to make others tell the truth but at the moment it is very limited. If she really focuses her abilities, an energy which drains her emotionally and physically if she should focus for very long, then Truth can force someone to unwillingly tell the truth. The more the person wants something to remain a secret or to not tell though the harder it is to get them to speak and the more draining on her energies. Her powers are not at full strength yet as she is still growing and at the moment she can only force up to five true statements from people each day before needing to regenerate her abilities with rest. She is also unable to get any of the most top secret information, she just doesn't have the strength for it just yet. Once her strength grows over the next few years she will likely be more of a threat and will be able to get to more important truths including secret codes and rival plans.

History:

Truth was the priviliged first child of Julia and Luke Saunders. Luke, as Julia would sadly later find, was somewhat of a womanizer and why not? With a salary like his and his good looks and charm he would woo nearly anyone he wanted to. He had been going out with Julia for two years when she found out about the birth of Roman to one of his former employees less than a few days later. Knowing this meant he had been with another woman while seeing her Julia called off their romance but she couldn't stay away and he bought her back with winning words and riches. Julia found out she was pregnant a year later.

It wasn't long before he popped the question and Julia found herself accepting even though a part of her knew that he didn't truly love her the way she wanted him to and was marrying her only to keep his company out of trouble. It was only in retrospect that she remembered how he had paid off and continued to pay off the secretary who had had Roman so as to keep that story from breaking to the news. She asked him only one thing in return, that Roman would not interfere with their life and he promised to keep the child away, after all his only connection with Roman was through blood and the money paid every six months to Roman's mother.

With Julia it was different for awhile. He didn't change and there was always that part of him but after Julia's pregnancy and for the first year's of his child's life he didn't stray. A part of him enjoyed being a father or at least it did until her mutant gene, stemming from a dormant x-gene that he unknowingly carried, emerged later in life. For the time being though he marvelled at the beauty of his daughter who his wife ironically enough named Truth.

Truth was a priviliged child, owning everything she could possible want even as a baby and due to her father's riches she even got time with her mother who had no need to work. There were many social functions however and the small blonde baby was left with a hired nanny during those numerous occasions. When Tru was four she became a sister to Julia's second child Angelina. Unbeknownst to Julia she wasn't the only one Luke had slept with. There was no child this time but he was having an affair with another secretary and in office gossip that was kept very private it became common to discretely joke about how every pretty young woman at the company ended up his secretary and either rising high within or being transferred abruptly or fired.

Luke had less time for Angelina, the thrill had worn off for him and he didn't care so much although her mother fussed over her greatly. Naturally golden-haired and blue-eyed Angelina was the apple of her mother's eye and as the baby of the family was treated far better than her sister, a sulky brunette. Truth was beginning to hate having to dress up for every social event and the status attached when she went to a special private school. It seemed family name mattered more to everyone than personality and unconsciously Tru began to lose her kindly disposition, becoming discontent with life at home and at school.

There were not so many ways to rebel in such a strict and proper house as that of the Saunders' household but Tru found ways. She dated boys her mother would have had a stroke to see her with and she wore clothes with holes, sparkles and listened to loud music. Perhaps if she had been an only child Julia would have made more of an effort but as Truth was an angry thirteen year-old her nine year-old sister was a perfect angel and so Julia turned to Angelina, presenting her at social engagements instead.

Things went from bad to worse as Tru gained her first mutant ability at age fourteen. She began to have faint impressions of being able to tell when people were telling the truth or not and her ability to lie to people was growing also. Truth relished in her newfound talents for being able to lie well to her parents made everything easier. She could convince her mother that no of course she wasn't dating the delivery boy who seemed to smile mischeviously at her whenever he delivered their food. When she was fifteen she could say that no of course she hadn't gone to a party with alcohol and she most certainly hadn't had sips herself. Her mother bought every word and just turned away with a tightlipped look. She may have believed everything but she knew that her daughter certainly wasn't reined in despite what she thought was great effort on her part. Julia turned back to Angelina and Truth did whatever she wanted.

At sixteen she spent the whole night out and slept with a guy. That she couldn't lie about, not when the similarly bred boy's mother called to say her son had been out allnight and had come back home that morning with a girl not far from his side. Julia was furious and she tried to ground her daughter and this time even Luke seemed to care. Afterall a wild daughter like that was an embaressment to his name and to the company. Truth was beside herself and she lashed out later at the dinner table when Julia out of the blue asked Luke if he had been having an affair. Tru's powers had grown by now and she could tell if someone was telling a lie fairly easily, not to mention the fact that she had always suspected it herself, particularly once she had met Roman last year however brief and unintentional their meeting. He lied of course and Truth said he had been having an affair. At first it seemed like she wasn't believed but Luke's face and Tru's told Julia everything. She sent Angelina upstairs and spoke to Tru and Luke harshly. Their had been a string of affairs but the most recent had been for three years now. Julia loved her husband even if he didn't really love her and she blamed the daughter she had never gotten along with, each one casting harsh words at their daughter.

Truth had had enough of that and when they sent her to her room she packed up the belongings she wanted and some cash and jewelry and took off through her bedroom window. She looked up Roman in the phonebook, by now eighteen and living on his own in the big city, and called him. He came to get her and the sixteen year old abandoned her family since they had abandoned her in spirit years before. She lived in Roman's apartment for two full years, assisting in paying rent with the small amount of money she recieved from working at a club downtown as a waitress and later as a sort of fortune teller, using her powers to a certain extent to tell things about a person and to predict something to come. Tru went by Soothsayer at the club on occation and she died her hair blonde and even added a purple streak for rebellion although the streak was easily washable and she only applied it when she felt like it.

Her parents tried to contact her only once but she told them they could tell the press whatever they wanted, she didn't care about making a public scandal for her father's company but in return they were not to force her to return and they didn't. Even though Julia and Luke had difficulties she wouldn't and couldn't leave him, knowing the scandal it would cause they put up appearances for the sake of Angelina and the corporate high class world.

With living with him Tru discovered that Roman had also gotten the mutant gene and she delighted in the fact that the person she cared about most was like her. It was probably the fact that the only person who had ever really cared about her in more than a superficial way was also a mutant that led to her scorn of humans and her later joining Maverick. One night at the club she met Geneve, a wealthy girl her age who actually appreciated her situation. Gen came back a few nights a week and Tru found she respected the wealthy girl who didn't let her parents push her around although she was on good terms with them. Geneve learned that Truth was a fellow mutant and even managed to learn her powers as she scoped out the rebellious blonde. The Leader of a new organization called Maverick was seeking members and when she heard Truth speak about how much she despised the way non-mutants seemed to think they controlled everything around them although they had no power in comparison Gen knew she had found her girl.

Geneve told Tru everything about their fledgling organization and Truth was more than interested. Her life was at a standstill since she had dropped out of high school and was staying with her half brother and when offered a place in an organization that would actually do something and that would give her enough money to never have to worry again she greatfully accepted without a second thought. Truth asked Roman if he wanted to be a part but Roman wasn't as against humans as she. He knew that humans were good for something even if mutants had their abilities that placed them ahead in caliber and his new girlfriend who Tru hadn't really come to know was human. Tru told him the offer would always stand and she left his apartment. He told her to keep in touch and to call if she needed anything, greatfully the blonde accepted.

Currently Truth lives in the luxurious Dragonfire Penthouse. Although Maverick hasn't yet accomplished much...or anything really they are recruiting and setting out to make themselves a name and Truth is fully on board. Although she had formerly been called Soothsayer, Gen coined a new name which stuck. That codename was Lye.

Personality:

Although Tru isn't really a girl with a bad heart she is resentful and bitter which makes it hard to tell the difference. Maverick is a new beginning to her and so she has great respect and admiration for its team members and for the affiliation itself but holds bitterness for much of the rest of the world. Tru is a rebel in a sense for she does rebel against convention, as seen in her sometimes present purple streak but she doesn't buck all authority, just high class corporate types who think they control all. Since she can lie convincingly Tru sometimes doesn't feel the need to tell the truth and may end up lying or being closed off about certain subjects she would rather keep private. She's not shy about stating what she wants and is used to getting it, first from her parents, then from her brother figure and now with Maverick and going her own way had led to Tru being a very confident person who is often more stubborn than is good for her. She's a horrid tease and tends to often tease people, particularly boys just because she can. Her sense of humour can be dry and sarcastic and she plays with boys and even with 'friends' although she is rarely dismissive of people like Gen and Roman. Tru hates being in debt to anyone and isn't keen on asking for help, more content to survive through something however much of a challenge it is in order to retain independence. While she does play people hot and cold she does come to her senses and can be serious when she needs to be. Truth is also fiercely competative and out to prove herself, which leads to her being very dependable to do a job to show that she can and to her always doing her best. She's not used to laziness and hates that in a person, believing that a person must take the initiative and work for something. Although Tru may talk tough and act uninterested at times she's a softie once you get to know her very well and she's completely loyal to those she trusts and cares for, lucky few as they may be.

Likes: Her powers, revealing lies in order to make people squirm, individuality, independance, action rather than all talk, music (mostly rock), lizards, strong powerful mutants.

Dislikes: Sheep (not the animals but those who follow the crowd), humans in general, her immediate family (excepting her half-brother), people like telepaths who foil her powers, people who can't stand up for themselves and people who make threats but don't follow through.

email: probably already known but cdinsmore@sympatico.ca

Re: Truth Saunders/Lye
ok, I guess with Loza more or less returning, that bio needs to be processed now ;)
I'll ask the others whether it'd be ok to make you a one-stamp-only player coz seeing as you've got the second-largest number of characters around, one should assume you've got some sort of practise by now :b

I like the way her powers are sort of opposing those of Rebecca's character - it's like they were two different sides of the same medal *nods* so there's no problem with two so similar powers, as we already hoped.

There's actually only one thing I'd ask you to please clearify:
You mention as her occupation that she wouldn't need to work, yet her personality is described as "not wanting to be in debt". Now, relying on Maverick's money would get her in a position of dependence that she probably wouldn't like, wouldn't it? Tell me if I'm wrong but as I understood the character, wouldn't she rather keep a job - however small - to do something, be able to cope if Maverick ended or something similarly challenging...?

Thaaat aside, all's fine! :D

Re: Truth Saunders/Lye
Thank you Matt for everything as always :D

Yeah it is interesting that we managed to use similar powers but to put them on opposite sides and with different sorts of motivations. Should be interesting to have a future confrontation.

Well she does have savings from her previous job even though they aren't much so that if Maverick were to not work out she has a fallback plan first of all so she would be able to survive and she could go back to waitressing if she had to.

In her view though her position with Maverick isn't really one of dependance or of reliance. She sees it more, ironically enough since Maverick is in certain ways like the companies she has spent her life running from, as a job that she does. Tru hasn't actually done much yet and were the organization to never actually do anything of value or to never use her then she would get out but so long as there is something there that makes her useful to them then Tru doesn't see it as dependance whether that's right or wrong technically. She sees it more as the money and living facilities being job benefits. Most companies have a dental plan, she has a place to live. She is very work minded though and driven so she doesn't take any of it for granted and if it went on too long than she would run. Tru might end up taking a job down the line but at the moment it doesn't bother her and she doesn't see herself as in debt and won't unless she is never able to work for them.

Hope that clears things up and thanks Matt :)
