Vin Diesel on 106th and Park...08.09.02
First of all allow me to say this before I begin my rant. This in no way means that I am no longer an admirer of Vin or will not support his movies, this is just my evaluation of what I witness the day he appeared on BET's 106th and Park.

I'd missed just about every television appearance of Vin (minus Jay Leno) up to the release date of his new movie xXx and was very elated to hear that he would appear on BET's 106th and Park. However due to me getting off late from work and dealing with my family once I got home I missed him yet again.

Then I found out that BET was going to repeat the show again on Saturday late evening and was over-joyed that I was going to get a second chance to see Vin on my favorite show. Okay now, after the big disappointment of xXx I thought I was at least due a delectable interview, similar to his interview on Jay Leno. I thought although he was a little too humble (the man asked for 30 mil to star in the sequel to The Fast and The Furious) the interview was great and he looked really good.

So then, the show comes on and I am dying with anticipation to see Vin. I think a couple of videos are played and then right before they go to commericial AJ mentions Vin Diesel and then you see Vin in the back standing in a hallway waiting to come out to sit down with AJ.

First I was excited, then I was like is Vin wearing FUBU? It was a quick glimps and then they went to commercial. I sat still on my couch and waited for the commercials to end and AJ to return to the screen so he could introduce Vin. Finally, the show comes back on and a few more videos were played and then Vin came out.

Upon a more intense glance and a few phone calls it was confirmed that he may not be only wearing FUBU Platinum, but he was wearing what looked like Timberland boots and rocking a tan colored Kango hat. I was fine with the hat because it was something he had worn before, but I was at a lost for words with the rest of his gear.

My mind was like, he's only dressing like this because he was advised to do so to fit into the demographic of the audience and the viewers, so I was like okay I can live with that, I think. Then he sits down and right as his ass is touching the couch I notice that his pants are hanging off his none existing ass. Immediately I thought, 'this is not the same Vin I saw on Jay Leno.'

So I think back to the last time he visited 106th and Park, and I realized that the man sitting next to AJ is an imposter. There could be no way that the man who appeared on the show a year ago was the same man sitting on the show that very moment.

Anyway, so he sat down and AJ introduced him to the crowd. The crowd, mainly filled with women were going wild for Vin Diesel. Vin was eating it up then AJ tells him that out of all the history of the show the response to Vin's presence was out of control and crazy. Yeah AJ where were you when Lil Bow Wow and B2K were on the show?

Moving on.....AJ asked Vin to explain how he got started in the buisness and all and Vin, clutching his chest like he was overwhelmed by the crowds reception, starting talking really slow like he was all of a sudden plagued with a mentally capacity to speak, telling the details of his misfourtunes leading up to his successful career. Mind you that I am growing disgusted by the minute with the interview.

Now, all Vin fans have heard the whole "coming from nothing to become something" story that Vin tells when he speaks of his days as a youth. He mentioned something about being on welfare and paused for like what seemed an eternity before saying "...and you know all about the food stamps."

He was like, "Eh I'm just keeping it real. If I can't be real in my hometown then I can't be real." Then as they go into another video after AJ cuts his senseless chatter short he throws up the Murder Inc. sign.

Okay, now this is really where my rant begins..... Vin what the fuck? I have never seen this side of you, ever. I don't know what possessed you to go onto the highest rated black syndicated show and make an ass out of yourself. First you come out dressed in clothing I have never seen you in and I can deal with that, but then you put on this whole thing about "Keeping It Real", and drag on with mindless chatter about your less fortunate life, throwing in the bit about being on wellfare and having to use food stamps for good measure.

Adding insult to injury and offending me even more, you throw up the Murder Inc. sign like you are some thug from The Bronx or Brooklyn. Well just let me be the first to say I have never been so insulted or offended in my whole entire life. For you to think that you had to be something or someone that you are not on a show designed and viewed by blacks is totally unacceptable to me.

It seems as if someone in your camp advise you, (and very wrong may I add) to try to "Identify" or "Pretend" to be something other than yourself because you were going on an African-American show. Being that I am a fan, I've heard you tell that story about your family many of times before appearing on 106th and Park, and not once had you ever mention about being on welfare and having to use food stamps. So why mentioned this on this particular show? Did you feel that that was the only you could identify with your black fans? Did you think by sharing that with the audience and the viewers that you would be more or less recieved as one of thier own because they could identify with the hardship of having nothing? What was it Vin? I am so dying to know.

Why didn't you mention that on Jay Leno?...cause you didn't. You sat up there and told that man about your days as a seven year old kid acting at some local theater, your days as a bouncer and working as a telemarketer. Not once did you ever mentioned "Welfare" or "Food Stamps." You did say something about living in an area of New York where it was government subsidise for families in the arts, but nothing more.

I'm just so disappointed that you came onto my favorite show and portrayed every stereo type there is to mankind regarding African Americans. I would have preferred you to just been yourself and come onto the show like the humble and very well spoken person who appeared on there a year before.

Your fans (Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Indian...etc) love you simple because you are in their eyes and mine an epitome of the nice guy next door. You have been up to this point; real, true and honest. Your ability to be Vin (multi-ethnic and all) with no apologies for embracing the human race captivated your loyal fans and made us fall in love with you more than you will ever know. Each and everyone of us (no matter the ethnic background) feel like in someway we can identify (with) and appreciate you.

Now I don't know, I'm not so for sure anymore because I feel like I was let down dramtically. My expectations of what I've percieved you to be has been shattered.

I now know that this is nothing more than a job for you. You will do what ever to promote or sell yourself and your movies. Your the public's puppet, dancing on strings that are being pulled by your manager and/or publicist.

Having said all that, and reading it, I am sad for you because I know that I am not the only fan you have offended with your little performance. Those who have supported you since the very beginning have a whole new outlook on who Vin really is, and it's sad because we (myself included) thought we knew who you were all along.

This rant is now over.....the site stands as is because I still think that Vin can restore his fan's faith in his ability to be himself and not someone else.....and The HOVA still loves Vin, me included.

I'm glad you brought this matter to a head in a very down to earth and real way. Since I am not a person "of color" as the ignorants would say, I was not aware of this display of reverse-ethnocentrism until you brought it to my attention. I can only hope he has a little more tact in the future, and sticks to one story.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw that show was "Ricky Martin." I remember seeing some show where as soon as he was in a formated program geared toward a teen audience, his accent was extremely heavy.

I have since seen Vin in various other shows where he does "mix it up," but I was somewhat surprised and put off by how he appeared this specific time on the program.

I didn't see his appearance this past week, did any of you?
