What Tow Vehicle Do You Have?
We plan to tow with our '02 Dodge Quad Cab 2500. It has a trailer tow rating of only 8200 lbs, and our TT weighs about 7500 dry, so we know we will have to plan carefully. For those times when we REALLY need to take it all, we have a '02 Chevy 3500 with a dump body, perfect for hauling all that fire wood

Tow Vehicle
We will be towing with our 2000 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab Long Box 2 wheel drive with a Cummins HO 6 speed.
This is my daily driver and very reliable with over 120000 miles on it by now. I also had 94 with a Cummins & auto earlier, great trucks.
Just getting ready for some pre trailering service here: change the rear end fluids to synthetic as well as all other fluids are due to be replaced. New windshield is needed as well as installing Prodigy brake controller prior to trailer delivery.
If I had my way would I really like to have the current Dodge/Cummins combo.
Re: Tow Vehicle
When we bought ours in September, I would have liked the diesel but hubby likes to trade every 2 years so couldn't justify the cost. I like to keep vehicles forever - I have a '96 Aurora that only has 85000 miles on it. I really get attached to my vehicles! But when we trade this one in, if I can't talk him into the diesel I will move up to a one ton.
I would just like to have the extra reassurance of more towing ability
Re: Truck choices
I don't really know that much about trucks.....I chose mine for the pretty blue color!
Ford makes a great truck I think - someday I would like an F450, when we go to a 5'er someday down the road. But here in 'farmland' where I live, you don't really see that many Fords, only because the nasty salt we use 6 months of the years really eats right through them. Not as bad on the Chevys/Dodges although I don't know why
Re: What Tow Vehicle Do You Have?
We have a '01 GMC Yukon XL Denali with a 6.0 liter. It is rated for 8400 lbs. Our 298RLS weighs in at about 7480. The same engine & transmission are used in 3/4-ton trucks that are rated for 10,000 lbs so I am sure we have adequate power. We towed a 30' Coachman, which weighed about 1500 lbs less, with no problem.

I think from your posting that your burban is a 1/2 ton, if so, you have less frame, brakes, more weight, etc, etc. than a 3/4 ton. Although I am NO expert I read that most suggest a safety-rating of not pulling more than 90% of rating and remember your weight of TT is empty. You will fill it with stuff, about 1000lbs many say, and remember to deduct the weight of passengers and their stuff from pull weight. On top of all that a great WD hitch & sway control is imperative.
Re: stevew298's truck/Yukon
Bjorn I think there are going to be a lot of very unhappy '03 owners...but it's good they caught that and are correcting it.
tow vehicle
Our tow vehicle is a 1991 Ford, 7.3 L, non-turbo diesel, automatic, 2WD, crew cab, SRW, long bed, with a goose neck hitch.
We added the 5th wheel-to-goose neck hitch adapter. We've only made one short tow so far (from the dealer, about an hour and a half away).
I'm looking to had more omphh to the 7.3 L non-turbo diesel, and installing a turbo may be my choice. If I do, I will go with the same turbo that Ford offered in 1993-94 as their Turbo-diesel option, ATS.
Buying a new Power Stroke Diesel is out of the question as we will only be using the truck to tow the fiver. No way can I justify $40k for a tow vehicle to tow once in a while. We try to go out every 4-6 weeks and plan on going to NC in August. Thus, I need to find a way to make this truck better for the NC mountains, and then keep the truck a while.
I know you're excited to have your new baby! If it were me, I'd be camping in the driveway until I could really get it out on the road.
Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do, there's an Open Road dealer in Statesville, NC not too far from the mountains. www.thefamilyrvcenter.com/
There's a beautiful campground in Lenoir right at the foot of the mountains. Full hookups, beautiful scenery, large sites, a wood deck at each site, and very nice facilities. Green Mountain Park Resort. We stayed there this past fall and I definitely want to go back. www.gmpresort.com/ It's one of these membership parks. However, if you're a member of RPI, you can stay there for $5/night. That's how we did it. An additional advantage is that you're right there at the mountains, but you don't have climb a mountain to get to the park. No strain on the truck. Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, etc are just minutes away. You're only a couple of miles outside of Lenoir, a nice town - large enough to offer just about anything you need without being too large.
Although we're towing a trailer now, my husband has a goose-neck hitch in his truck. We're considering purchasing a 5th wheel. He's talking about having the goose-neck replaced with a 5th wheel hitch. How do you like your conversion? Or have you even had a chance to find out yet?
Re: tow vehicleHowdy
Hubby just purchased a new Chevrolet 2500 HD Diesel Duramax, to pull our new Open Road. He loves the truck, we get great mileage. We had a 27 foot pull behind with a Dodge 1500 pickup and after having months of traveling fun, we traded it all in!
