WinXP help
I seem to be not able to set my homepage in Explorer, it keeps going to a bogus search engine every time I reboot.

Plus I am getting pop-ups again, the colorful ones not the Messenger ones, I turned them off. WTF was Microsoft thinking with the Messenger program? There has to be a switch that I need to flick to disallow popups from being able to be send to my machine.

Guessing I could actually load Comcast's software on here and then TURN OFF their snoop programs. it should be against some law for Microsoft to even code the abiltity to "Snoop" into other people's machines.

Re: WinXP help
Sounds like the CoolWWWSearch virus. I had this a while back.

You will need go into the registry and delete the offending files, turn off system restore, reboot, turn system restore back on, then run a good cleansing program. I suggest CWShredder.

There are lots of web pages out there that help with this virus.

RE:
Bah, downloaded Spybot and it found 3 spies, killed them and I am still getting pop-ups and that damn search page. Guessing I better invest in a better anti-virus program.

At this point a reformat of hard drive might be in order. Only thing on this machine is DAoC, SWG and Lineage 2.

BTW, did I have to install original DAoC and SI, or only ToA? Looks like there are 3 separate directories, I am thinking the 2 are useless.

EDIT: Bah, I rolled the sysyem back to the 1st of the month, virus must have taken effect after that, OH yeah, I turned this computer ON the 1st of the month :)

Fixed my problem, for now.

Re: RE:
Since this is the 1st virus that has ever gotten me, I hope they TAR and FEATHER the creator of it. I HATE commerials on tv, and I definitely hate ads on my computer.

AOL is getting very bad when it comes to ads, you wouldn't think it was the most EXPENSIVE service also!

Edit: I just noticed that my ezboard stuff is not in my other posts from home. That is one mean virus, totally took over my registry. Window XP must be very easy to hack or something, like I said I do ALOT of web browsing and I never got hit by a virus using Win98. Last 3 machines had win98, laptop has XP and it was acting funny also, but a good "Services" cleaning (damn Microsoft) and it started working again.

Re: RE:
<smiles>

I know where you are coming from when it comes to those worthless spy/ad ware programs and intrusions.

I have been keeping myself busy trying to stay on top of this crap. Finally found information on an exploit that windows has not patched, nor am I aware they are going to do in the future. (they may have already as the information I have read is not current)

However, checking the systems at work and one that is suppose to be secure, the registry shows that the exploit is still active. Basically it allows websites to run code on your machine by just accessing the website. Does this by using the unassigned ActiveX control permissions (which is defaulted as "on" in the windows registry.

I'm not the smartest guy when it comes to computers but this "screams" at me. So, I went into the registry and changed a couple of numerical values from being "on" to being "disabled". I'm hoping this fixes the problem of surfing and getting these spy/ad ware programs to just installing themselves without my consent. I know there are otherways to get the "crap" on your system but I'm hoping at least it will be by my stupidity and not by an exploit.

I'm still reading up on this and hopefully will be able to share more info. What a mess...(makes one think about learning a new OS)

edit: Will this also prevent certain programs to work or functions in the OS? I have no clue but still researching it. If anyone has any information please share. Thanks much!

Re: RE:
SpyBot did NOT work for this virus, which works in a circular fashion.

Do a simple search for CoolWWWSearch and find a nice news group with the exact details of deleting from your registry. I just dealt with this exact thing about a month ago. It is evil and annoying. My pop-ups were pornographic!

Also, system restore is your enemy with this virus.

Norton did nothing. SpyBot did nothing.

Re: RE:
if the system restore does not work, will find out tonight, a Frik'n /format c: will. :)

The newsgroup I found (will look more) told me to use Spybot, which DID find and remove ALOT of CoolWWWsearch files from the registry but did not fix the problem. So far the system restore worked, but I have only rebooted the machine once since trying.

Wanting to learn new OS.
Afalyn is on the right track. I'm on a constant virus/spyware vigil. Everytime I boot my system I check the registry for odd changes.

I feel the same about wanting to learn a new os. Linux is the next one I'm looking at. If I can find a way to run daoc on a linux system. I'm there.

Re: Wanting to learn new OS.
My registry was locked up tighter than my prom dates... err car.

I couldn't add new hardware, a 5600FX card or install new software. SWG must write something in the registry also, since it has been "more happy" since I rolled the system back. Now all I have to figure out is how to get nVidia and SoE to shake hands and get in the same boat! So basically to run SWG you HAVE to have Intel processor and a ATI videocard, if you don't SWG will not run. SoE even informs everyone that goes to their tech support that SWG is the most video hogging program they could write. I quit EQ when Sh!t Outa Luck (SoL) came out because my computer could not run it. Now my ubercomputer can't run SWG. SoE needs to get with the damn program and figure that not everyone has the penultimate setups.

Everything is working good so far, I did see some weird bookmarks this morning that I don't remember being there, so the virus might be still there sleeping and waiting to attack.
