Work Weekend Write-up and pics- Oct. 24 - 26, 2003
As usual I had a great time this past weekend at the Uwharrie Work weekend.
I got there Friday evening and joined up with the group at site 6 in Arrowhead. I set up my tent and we really didn't do aynthing exciting all evening. We caught up since the last trip and chatted around the fire. We were waiting for Jeff and Rich to show up from Tennessee. Actually, Jeff is from Colorado and flew to TN to meet Rich and they were driving out all day Friday. After a few calls to Lisa (Rich's other half) we finally got in touch with the lost party. We got them back on track and before long they were in the campground with us.
Saturday morning we woke up and headed up to the Outpost for some biscuits before we met at Hunt Camp. We got to Hunt Camp about 9:00 AM. After deciding who was going to do what we split into two groups and got our materials and tools loaded into and on top of the trucks. We split ways and all went to different sections of Dickey Bell to install fencing. It sure went a lot faster when there were more people working. The group I was working with had 2 augers, 2 tamping rods, 2 post hole diggers, at least 2 hammers. We got the first section done and moved on to the second section. The first section we were blocking off cut-throughs that had been made in a curve. The second section was where we put up fence to protect the wildlife field. People had gone up into the clearing and done donuts and whatever so the earth was bare, and not a very good habitat.
It was about 1:30 when we were given the option to quit or continue with more fencing. Not many people spoke up but we apparently decided to continue with more. We finally finished with the fencing probably aroun 3:00. (Just a guess). We really got a lot done.
Our group went back to camp and ate a very late lunch and sat around camp for a while. We ended up going on a night ride and had a great time. My electric fan came off on the section around Kodak Rock. That required a trailside repair to get it mounted again and re-wired but within a half hour we were back in business. We went back to camp and eventually hit the sack for the morning.
Sunday morning was kinda gloomy like it was going to rain. We made it up to the outpost a little after 9:00 with a much smaller group. Mark, and Scott, Jeremy, Darrell, Karen and I loaded up the fencing in a slow drizzle. We decided to take the wood up to the last place where we could use it next time. The rain picked up even more so we decided to not even try to get any onf it put up and just to leave it there so we wouldn't have to carry it up there next time.
Scott had to head home so the rest of us headed back to camp to pack up. We all got our stuff together and eventually headed home. Some later than others of course...
